We are very chicken friendly. #2 in egg production
. These laws were to prevent what kryptoniteqhs mentioned about impulse buyers at Easter then not knowing what to do with the chicks when they begin to grow. They were in all kinds of stores years ago and kept in the worst conditions, very sad.
I've been known to color myself like an easter egg... see pink hair in avatar pic <~~~~~
LOL
I have always been on the fence as to how I feel about dyed chicks.
Nothing really bothers me deep down about it, but it's not natural... I don't know.
It seems like they could stab the chick and kill it while it's in the egg to me
Do they inject the dye around the baby or into it? if they do it around the chick wouldnt that make it to where the chick had less air?
Now that I think about it I dont really think that it is right to go about it like they are. If they want colored chicks then they should do it after the chick hatches so they know they arent hurting the unhatched baby!!
If you google for 4H sites you will find instructions for dying chicks in the shell, which was originally done for research purposes. They candle when injecting, and only a tiny amount of dye is needed. It does not go into the airsac.
Neon chicks are unnatural? What about various parrots, eclectus, parakeets, some finches & canaries, and all sorts of wild tropical birds.
If you dislike it, make your voice heard at your state legislature and to the hatcheries from whom you purchase. Just realize that for everyone against the practice, there are at least as many who see no harm. I think
On the one hand it might introduce someone to chickens who might not have considered them before and thus begins a wonderful pastime.
On the other hand it might introduce someone to chickens who might not have considered them before and then they are not taken care of properly and end up dead.
covers it best. Dyeing chicks isn't really the problem--irresponsible purchasers is. There are other ways to deal directly with the problem rather than doing an end run around that spoils for everyone the fun intended. Same thing for minimum purchases of chicks.
i think its adorable! i wish it were legal here because i would buy a few.
what i dont understand is why people buy chicks for their kids on easter..maybe its just the ones i buy but chicks can be pretty gross and i wouldnt want one near my kids easter candy.

Yes, they are unnatural for them. The others are not bright colors because they were dyed.
I'd bet money that more chicks die needless deaths at the hands of children at this time of year than any other. Maybe someone will get into chickens because of it, however, I doubt that is the intent of some parent who gives into a whiny kid when they make that purchase. The kid probably would be much less likely to ask the parent for a naturally colored chick than a crayon colored one.
Why aren't they dyed any other time of year? That is my other contention, but we won't get into that part.
Lab research is something else altogether and not what we are discussing here.
