Colored Rangers Grow Out Journal/ Video Added pg 11

They're probably generating so much heat amongst themselves, that the brooder is too hot...even with the actual brooder temp being 75. It's amazing how much heat even 1 chicken can give off...much less 100 of them.

Yes this is exactly what I was thinking, the Cornish X's never did this unless the brooder temps didn't lower but after raising the brooder they where all back under it ?? Today is the day they get the rest of their brooder area opened up, this also might help more space ?? Will report back if this helps, but for now they are all doing great in the pile. Every morning and evening when I change water and feed I make all of them move to make sure there is no victims under the pile so far so good.

It's definitely a good idea to give them some more room. 100 chicks in a pile...somebody's gonna get smushed.

And I bet when you give them more room, you will see them return to the brooder for heat on occasion. Cornish x will stay beneath brooder lamps because they don't feather out normally....they've always got bald spots somewhere on them, so they stay cold.

Anywho, your CRs are looking just awesome. Can't wait to see them at 8 weeks old!

Yes this is very true. So far on the CR's they are growing at the same speed as their feathers, no bald spots yet.

Well I opened up the divider wall opening up the rest of the brooder. They now have the full 5'x9' area. I know this is still a little under what everybody recommends but this is what I got for right now. I'll be building an official brooding house when the weather gets a little better, but for this year this will have to do. I even pushed the brooder back against the wall they all are piling in to see if I can get them to at least pile on the other sides.

I really like that setup...see nothing wrong with it myself.

As we all know, chicks grow out of brooders super fast, so ya gotta do things in stages. Whatever works best for you, that's what matters. We all have our own way of doing things, and it's nice to see how others manage their flocks....keeps the ideas flowing!

Thanks this is what we always used just in a bigger space. This setup works great for chickens and turkeys. I have never hatched or raised just a couple always 50 or more of something at a time

Does anyone know the life expectancy of the rangers, if not butchered? Will they eventually have some of the same problems cornish do such as getting too big, heart problems, leg problems, etc..?
