Where are you located? I have a wellsummer cockerel from my eldest group who is just wonderful but who unfortunately may be one roo too many for me soon....I'm waiting to see their dynamics as they reach puberty, so no promises yet, but if you're near I will keep you in mind when the time comes....With the exception of a single Australorp, mine are all mutts and I love seeing what pops out when they start to lay. I have a Brahma cross roo now and am trying to choose between a Wyandotte and a welsummer cockerels for a back up roo. Next year I think I’ll go for a white laying breed. I saw you mention that you have an Ancona, OP. I have a couple Ancona mixes and they are absolutely my best layers. I would love an Ancona roo for next year!

They look so nice! I have a buff Orpington that lays speckled eggs too! They’re great hens. The ameraucana x leghorn is a good cross since you get the blue egg gene and the laying abilities of the leghorn. We have a similar cross and she’s a great layer.I had a buff orpington (my avatar) that laid this pretty pink egg with whites specks.

Mutts can make some of the best chickens! It’s always interesting to see what you end up with. With the exception of a single Australorp, mine are all mutts and I love seeing what pops out when they start to lay. Thank you, but it looks like we’re across the country from one another. I mentioned the Wyandotte and welsummer because I actually already have them, lol. I have three Wyandottes (though one has already removed himself from consideration with his behavior) and a welsummer who I picked up at the store to fill a minimum. The welsummer fits my egg color goals more but he doesn’t have much personality. The Wyandottes are nicer but will pass on genes for lighter brown eggs. The nice ones will grow up some more before I choose. They’re all still under 3 months old.Where are you located?
