Chickens are a slippery slope. My downfall is a big shed that can fit lots of birds.

I love barnevelder, they are gorgeous and the roosters are very mellow.

I love Barnevelder too. I only have one. Not laying yet can’t wait to get the first egg.

How do you know which hen lays which color?

Since different breeds lay certain colours, you can sometimes tell which hen lays which egg if you keep different breeds, however, there are a lot of breeds that lay similar colours.

At times it’s only possible to tell which hen lays which egg by watching them lay the egg. Even with chickens of the same breed, their eggs are usually unique, and some ways of telling who lays what are by looking at shape, colour, whether there’s speckles, and size.

Thank you for that information. I have one Barnevelder, one silver laced Wyandotte and one Buff Orphington. I know the Barnevelder lays a darker egg but not sure about the other two.

This is when it depends on you seeing who lays what and making observations of the differences between both eggs.

Some Barnies lay darker eggs. The breeder I got my barnie from, her hens lay lighter eggs. We'll see what mine lays (she's only 12 weeks) but I probably will lose them in the mix with my other lighter brown layers.

I can tell you that your BO will lay a lovely brown egg, not the dark brown type. I have 2 BOs. I also have 1 SLW who should be laying any day now so I can't personally verify her egg coloring. From what I've read they should be a similar brown to the BO egg. Have you posted pics of your chooks anywhere here? I'm sure we'd all love to see them.

How do you know which hen lays which color?

I know the green one came from the only Easter Egger (19 weeks old) that I have because that's the color they lay. The 2 brown eggs come from the 2 Buff Orpingtons (34 weeks old). I can't tell which brown egg came from which BO unless I see them at it.

Most of these are Welsummer eggs. 2 are Ameraucana, 1 bantam OEGB, and 1 Silver Laced Wyandotte egg. Bottom left corner is either a Welsummer or Red Sex Link. (The only difference is the presence of spots.)
