Columbian Rock Thread!!!!

I bought a Colombian Rock from a guy in yorktown too! Im guessing its the same person . What a small world! They are about 5 weeks now and Im rrrrreally hoping to have a hen. Mine has ZERO markings. Almost no comb or waddle and NO black feathers on head neck or tail! Is that odd? I thought buy now Id see some black coming in. Ill try to post a pic tonite. Although he/she is simply all white!

Should have plenty of markings by that age. I bet you have white Rocks.

This is one of my CR hens. Some characteristics. Slow to mature, notice the shape of her body compared to the Delaware below. Personality not overly friendly. Have yet to have one go broody . Hope they do. These may have more black than they should.

This is a Delaware hen. Note the shape of her body compared to the CR hen. Matures earlier than the CR. Personality very friendly and calm. Have one sitting on eggs as I type this. She too has more black than I like. I'm not sure if she's from my original stock.

Yeah i noticed my CR isnt super friendly. she lets me hold her and she isnt scared but she is also not thrilled went i enter the coop. shes is only 12 weeks old though.. How long did it take yours to fully mature?

I'd say it was better than 26 wks. Much longer than any of my birds. I was getting concerned. They are laying nicely now and I understand they will for a longer time.

Many of the dual purpose breeds are over looked because they take longer to mature which mean more feed. There are other such as the true Jersey Giants. Great dual purpose birds but due to them taking longer to mature lost favor with the commercial industry.

Both these breeds I find nice in that while the CR are not overly friendly they are not an aggressive breed either.

Mine are a bit skittish too but I was get eggs and crowing by 16 weeks.

Great foragers. They stay out late looking for bugs while everyone else is heading to coop for bed.

I have one that went broody and is now raising foster-chicks that I snuck under her. Great mom. 2 others went broody this year but was not to hard to break them.

oh, i have a question for some more experienced CR owners than me. One is, have you realized that your CR's are a little more nosier than other breeds? Two is, how long do they usually live?

I don't find them noisier and they live as long as I let them. Seriously I don't really know. I have only one chicken live to be older than 5. I don't usually keep them longer if they're hens.

OMG, de'ja' vu.

Mine just started laying this past fall.
