Hardware cloth is actually metal mesh, see below. Many places sell it, comes in various sizes, widths. 1/2 inch squares or smaller is best for chickens.

I agree. Hardware cloth is probably the best thing you can use for chickens. It is made out of metal and the squares are so small that chicks/chickens can’t choke themselves on it and predators cant fit their teeth through it.
