Comb issues

Hey guys, my friends chickens comb has these scab like things on it and the chicken is limping please help, I think it might be Fowl Pox but I’m not sure

The comb looks chapped and the points appear frostbitten, but I'm not seeing anything that looks scabby. @Wyorp Rock or @Eggcessive may be able to see something I can't.

Are you in an area that's been well below freezing? This could be frostbite from the looks of it. The crusty blistering and the swollen tissue look a lot like my roosters' combs. They got severe frost bite after being chased off overnight by a couple of dogs and had to spend a 13 degree night outdoors.

When you say “a bit of a cold snap,” are you understating as in, “It was 20 below when I got up but it’s 6 above now, so all’s good”? (That’s our story here today)

I agree... the rooster looks frostbit to me. Single combs are susceptible more than smaller ones like rose or pea combs. For prevention rub Vaseline on and keep them out of the wind. Mine had some frostbite after an unexpectedly cold night and since it was supposed to get colder I rubbed on Vaseline. I think it helped treat the ouchies as well as provide some protection from recurrence. Poor girls.

If you are in a cold climate, you would not be seeing fowl pox, a virus spread by mosquitoes in hot weather. I would agree that you might be seeing some frostbite. Do not put any creams or ointments on it, since they can prevent it from healing and massage or rubbing can damage frostbitten skin. You could put iodine or Vetericyn on it if you bring him inside for it to dry.

As @Granny Hatchet said, pictures of feet would be good to see if there is frostbite or other problems.

I've been treating my roosters' blistered combs with Vetericyn. I love this stuff. It's easy to spray on, and it prevents infection while promoting new tissue growth. But as @Eggcessive says, you need to keep them in an above freezing place until it dries or the comb will freeze further.
