Comb questions

It has the Icelandic type rose comb. No duplex involved
Are you sure? Our Icelandics have single combs. Someone on here said it looked nothing like a single comb/rose comb cross…? But I don’t know.

It looks pretty split to me…

:idunno I don't know either.

If Icelandics tend to have rose combs with that shape, and the chick inherited the actual rose comb gene from the Deathlayer hen, I suppose the Icelandic rooster could have contributed some other genes that cause that shape (even though he has a single comb, he could have genes that affect the shape of a rose comb, but we can't see their effect in him because he doesn't have a rose comb to let them show.) Maybe?

Chicks will probably have combs that look sort-of like a buttercup comb. I've read that some chicks may look like they have a single comb, even when they do inherit the V-comb gene from one parent.
I think at one point someone on here had one that was a single X V and it was named Moose cause the comb looked like moose antlers.
I might be wrong about the comb cross but the chicken's comb was way cool.

Might have been one of mine. I've had a handful of single x V comb birds I've posted. Mine generally look like stars as a chick though

I don't remember seeing one named Moose, but I think I've seen pictures of similar birds. I agree, some of them are pretty cool looking!

Yeah I really don’t know!

Our broody barred rock is sitting on another of our Deathlayer’s eggs. They are due to hatch in 6 days. Our Icelandic roo has been confined during the day now and is only with the rest of the flock at night (when the others are roosting in the coop). We have been doing this for at least a month now. The Spitzhauben roo has been the one taking care of the flock, so the upcoming chick has a lot more chances of being part spitz. If it hatches, I will try to post pictures of it growing up! We’ll see what kind of comb it develops

I can’t be sure but it’s my best guess. It could be an Icelandic x Deathlayer right? The rose wouldn’t have to come from the Icelandic, they will still pass some genetics that affect the shape of a rose comb. Most of the rose combs with one copy of duplex that I’ve seen are split towards the rear of the comb. I’ve seen a lot of Icelandics with rose combs just like your bird.

Yes, it could be an Icelandic/Deathlayer mix. That’s interesting. You’re right though that the spilt from the duplex usually starts at the rear of the comb, we had some Icelandic/Spitzhauben mixes and the combs split at the top.

We have another Deathlayer mix chick coming up that has a lot more chances of being part Spitzhauben so hopefully it’ll hatch so we can see what comb it develops!

Unfortunately, the Deathlayer egg didn’t make it. I don’t know what happend, the egg was there a day ago, but it has disappeared. My guess it that the mom might’ve broken the egg, and then ate the inside. She is now left with 3 Light Brahma/Icelandic mixes, 1 Barred Rock/Icelandic mix, and 1 purebred Spitzhauben.

I’m actually not 100% sure the Brahma and Barred rock babies are mixed with Icelandic, I’m just assuming since our Spitz roo has had trouble impressing our Brahma hen. Also because we have let our Icelandic roo (who has been separated from the rest of the flock) mate with the Brahma and Barred Rock since he was getting lonely.

Technically, there’s a chance one of them could be part Spitz but it’s very unlikely. I would’ve loved to see a pea/V comb cross though!
