Yesterday, when I had my back turned, my dog did something to my Big Red. She started squawking the loudest she ever has, and finally calmed down. I didn't see anything wrong with her. Later, I found a drop of blood on the henhouse floor, and saw some black spots on her comb. I put some antibiotic ointment on it.
This morning there were several drops of blood on the henhouse floor under the roost, and it looks like another bird pecked at it. The scab is bigger.
I inspected her much more closely this morning and put her in the coop by herself, and left the others outside.
I took a photo, not easy to do! It looks like she has a few other black spots on her comb and thing under her chin (wattle?).
I love my hens (four), and when something happens that appears lifethreatening, I become very stressed out and can barely function. Maybe chickens are not the best pets for me.
Here are the questions!
I can keep Red isolated during the day, but what do I do at night? Keep her in a crate in the coop or in the garage?
Could this be something other than a scab, such as stick fleas, or pox?
As a newbie to chicken raising I wonder how much preening is normal? When they are resting, they seem to preen. Is that normal? They seem to be molting now, as there are lots of feathers everywhere.
I just wormed with Wazine 17 and found several roundworms in their poop.
So I cut out giving them eggs as a supplement, and am wondering if I need to go buy some to give them extra protein.
Thanks for listening and any suggestions you might have!
