Come Hatch along with Us!!! Setting Oct12-Oct 20th

Yeah I candled them and I am pretty disappointed. There are quite a few that look bad, dark blobs and murky. 10 looked bad and the rest clear. I saw NO clear.signs of development. I found one that was clearly rotten, I actually went to crack it open to check it out and it POPPED. Right in my hand. I then proceeded to puke. So I tossed the ten eggs. The blobs are much too big to be an embryo at this stage. I left the clear ones just in case any are viable.
I'm not really blaming the person who sold them, it was prob the PO that I think caused the damage. My box was actually "missent" to the wrong zip code and had an extra day of traveling. I think the eggs were well packed in their little bubble wrap suits. I would try the seller again, they had very reasonable prices.
I will candle again on day 10, if still nothing I'm in for a do-over.[/quote

Mine took until Monday to come ....5th day.Mine also didnt look too perfect butI keep most until day 7 at least.Put the bad lookers in a diff bator.Maybe it was me but i only saw a couple i thought looked like they should at that beginner age.I always 2nd guess myself and if the dark area looks too big i just feel maybe it had started already and will make it...just early. Then day 17 i candle and take out the non preformers. The one i had that was broken waswrapped well and really in the center of the rest of the eggs so i think it was cracked or bad. With 2 others all dark day 1 and a leaker i am worried f the eggs werent as fresh as should but 4 1/2 more days in shipping didnt help im sure. Will see.
I often wonder if ppl just pick whats out there at the time under broodys etc to ship.I am sure not all but ppl are ppl you never know.Especailly if they dont care much and know it isnt unusual to buy eggs shipped and get 0- 3 chicks so why bother to try and get new ones only.Guess i am not extremely trusting when it comes to business lol

I am usually the same way with eggs im not sure of, but after the one exploded in my hand I didn't want to chance them infecting any other eggs. Out of the 10 left, 6 are from the shipped group and the rest are from my hen and probably not fertile. (I had a roo, but got rid of him, 2 weeks later she started laying. I thought there might be a chance)

As for shipping, I have never had anything but shipped eggs. I can only find chicks locally, no one is selling hatching eggs. I really love the whole process, I want to hatch them myself. But this is by far the worst outcome I've had. And its also the first time I had such an issue with the PO. I always pay promptly, so usually eggs arrive about 3 days later. I definitely think 2 extra days of travel made a big difference. Shipped eggs are always a gamble, but I've never had less than 50% hatch. Until now.

the last time I bought eggs I paid nearly $50 for just ten eggs, 7 developed, 6 hatched. So when these 16 eggs arrived I was pretty hopeful of a decent hatch. Bleh. The drama of being a chickie momma. :)

hey guys can i join in i set 13 eggs on the 12th of october in my home made incubator in previous hatches i had about a 70-85 percent hatch rate this hatch i have set 12 arucana and 1 mixed bantem that i had left after mr fox got all my chooks the egg is from my best broody bantem hen r.i.p girl she was the best mum ever she was very ltl. once she hatched out 13 eggs what an effert any way so i have 13 in today is day 8 so i will candle tonight to see how the look i will post some pics of my home made incubator in action with a couple of chicks hatching a few hatchers back

Welcome to our group!!! Where did you get the Araucana eggs from? I have 2 8 week old pullets but sadly they are not tufted. Tried hatching a set last month and only 1 hatched and died at 3 days. They really are hard to hatch and raise.

whoow you have a lot of hatches coming without the BRs ?Maybe its a blessing... it will be better to sell them later early spring anyway or is this a better time of year forppl wanting chicks?.Ii think ppl like EEs b/ c they lay the colored eggs well here anyway.I like the white ones sort of cool white but colored eggs.

See around here all the feed stores just started selling chicks again because it has gotten cooler. People are buying them like crazy. They get the chicks in on Thursday/Friday and they are sold out by Monday.

OK so from the attack of my children, there were a whole 7 eggs remaining. most of them i found in the brooder embedded in the bedding. They got put back in the coolerbator, which sat cold for I'm guessing at least 4 hrs. granted the room temp back there with the heat bulbs is about 80-85. I'm guessing the eggs are totally smoked after all of that. Anyone think there is a shred of hope for any of the eggs? or should i toss em, sanitize my bator and reset a small test batch to see if I can in fact get a successful hatch out of my cooler-bator? Opinions wanted. :)

I would set them and candle in a few days to see what you have. Even if you only get a few to hatch it is better than nothing. Remember mama leaves her nest every day so maybe your eggs were not bounced around too much and are still viable.

That's why I am done with ebay. I will only buy from BYC members from now on. The ones on ebay can write whatever they want and there is no way for you to verify that what they say is correct. I bought Heritage RIR eggs from a lady on there and now that the 3 hatched they look nothing like the one I hatched in August. They are too light in color to be "true" Heritage RIR's. At least if you buy from BYCer's you know they have /want a good reputation so they are going to be upfront with you about the quality of the eggs. They don't want that negative feedback on their profile. Neither do the ebayers but they want you to leave feedback on the packaging not the actual hatch rate.

if I could find eggs within a few hours driving distance I probably would, but it seems like no one in SC has bbs orps!

Have you tried Craigslist? I have found a few breeders in my area by going on ebay and seeing where the people are from. Some of them have been within an hour or two of me and I contact them and no postal service needed.
