As you can see by the photo below, I've had it happen too. Though I don't completely agree with the notion that this is strictly confined to newly laying hens. This was produced by one of my two and a half year old veterans last summer.

Who knows for sure why they do it?

Might be a lack of an essential nutrient in their diet, might just be a glitch in their plumbing...a temporary hiccup. Whatever it is, it is a little bit stomach turning when you find it in the middle of the yard!!

I have to say it very interesting, we just got our first egg today so I'm sure at some point we will get one of these too

That orange thing in the "pouch" -- is that an egg yolk? If so, that is a VERY big yolk, in comparison to the other normal egg.
