I understand that somethings must be sacrificed to keep from running in the negatives. That is why it's commercial farming and not backyard farming. I applaud your efforts to make them as comfortable as you can within staying in the margins. I know it is really hard to balance commercial keeping.
What you could do, is when the hens are nearing the end of profitable production, you could post in the sale-trade-giveaway section. You may be surprised at how many people would want them. Just a suggestion, there may be dangers associated with this, as some people would not understand you did the best you could without breaking the bank. Maybe something to think about.
