computer virus?

My sister had that problem about two weeks ago and it crashed her system. She said it came from MSN website telling her to download and found out it was a MSN "look-alike". She wished she would have paid attention to it.

I got Care One program from MSN and it did a very good job cleaning out viruses.

I make it a habit to NEVER open E-mails with forwards or attachments, maybe just my personal paranoia.

what you need to do is get a great anti virus program (NORTONS IS JUNK) scan the comps all of them then tell all of your friends to add in the titlew a message like 143 or a personal thing like the word Pizza this way you know it is from them if you don't see it don't open it plain and simple.

www.Advast.com Free home edition it updates on auto and trust me when I say it catches about 99.99% of things it has saved my butt I don't know how many times.

Good luck to you I hope this helps.

Why would anyone pay to clean a PC much less that much.....

When you go buy a PC get one with a restore partition (those "E-machine thingies" almost all have them) an have a second hard-drive put in it.
Save your pictures, links an what not on the second hard-drive. When you have any PC issues you just restart the PC, hit the button to start the restore partition (An F# key) It will then ask if you want to soft restore or to format an restore. You format an restore. The walk away for about 3 hours an you will come back to a perfect PC.
No need for a virus scanner or any of that other mumbo jumbo.

On other PCs you still want ether a second hard drive or disks to save your stuff on. Never save anything important to the main hard drive of your PC EVER. Then have someone show you how to format an restore your PC. It is simple, takes only minutes of your time an cost you nothing.

That happened to me a few years ago, the "you have a virus, click here to get rid of it" thing. I was busy at the time and preoccupied and didn't even think about it. It was a devastating virus for my computer; no one could get rid of it; I even paid an antivirus tech to get rid of it, and it didn't work. We eventually reformatted it but it did sustain some permanent damage as a result of the virus, I think. My friend is in IT also which is why the IM totally baffled me for a while; I have had that happen in emails from friends, though, in the past, so don't know why IM would be any different, I guess.

Reb, I think you are forgetting that many folks have programs such as office that only allow you to reload it twice, or games that you may have paid for (and even if installed on other hard drive) that wiping your main partition still renders the game inoperable... documents can be set up on the 2nd drive, but unless they religiously backup their stuff and use the settings & transfer wizard a lot I don't see many folks who do this.

Not to mention the 3 or 4 days worth of security updates you have to do in order to be protected enough not to have to go through that nightmare all over again.... resetting up your firewalll...........

Oh yeah, dump windows, run linux and you'll be fine for years without any hassles

I have a very good friend who is a supervisor in IT and used to be a virus tech; he always highly recommended AVG as being the best free AV software there is; and maybe that's true....but I did get a virus when I had AVG, and it was the paid version. They were very good about giving me a refund though; it was brand new, I had just installed it. Anyway, b/c of my friend, I am very conscientous about updates and I have McAfree 09 installed on both my PC's, and additional protection on my desktop, which is fine.

holy cats!!!! I don't know what the currency exchange is between our countries ATM but in the failing american dollar, most of my virus cleanups run about $45

Maybe I should move to Michigan? Last time I had a virus I spent a couple hundred to have it fixed, and that was with no guarantee, really.
