Concrete Thumb, urban farmer in Pittsburgh PA

Where in Pittsburgh? I'm just northwest in Beaver County, but get down to Pittsburgh fairly often (west side mostly or downtown). We're just starting on our chicken adventure, I have 16 eggs in an incubator set to hatch this Saturday.

We have about 3/4 acre, so not an urban farm by any means, but we rent so I can't exactly dig up the whole yard (and my kids need a yard to play in)! I did expand our garden a bit this year, we have 14 tomato plants, 8 cucumbers, peas, pole beans, carrots, zucchini, pie pumpkins (new), spaghetti squash (new), watermelon, cantelope, onions, strawberries, new Zealand spinach, 4 blueberry bushes, 3 raspberry plants (new), and a small plot of sweet corn (new). I have a hard time with my cool crops like broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage... need to add more mulch to see if I can keep them cool enough to form heads this late in the season. I've never been able to grow lettuce for some reason! Potatoes were pretty much a bust this year too (first attempt, not sure if it was bad seed potatoes or too shady a location). There were 3 mature pear trees on the property when we moved in, although the bugs always do a number on the young fruit so they end up full of hard stones, good for pear cider and pear sauce though. A couple mature apple trees here too, but they are mostly in bad shape - we did get a decent crop from one tree last year though.

I have a couple other chicken friends in the area, but I'm not sure if they are on the forum... one outside Aliquippa, one outside Carnegie, and an urban chicken mama downtown.

No such thing as bad seed potatoes but each must have the little or big eye's on them .

Don't mean to go all OT on ConcreteThumb's thread... they were all well sprouted, but not stored well (they were wrinkly and softish when I planted them). Seed potatoes turned to mush and never sprouted foliage by the time I dug them up a month+ later, but they did each produce 6-8 nice looking gumball-sized potatoes during that time. I inquired about it over on the Garden Web forum but didn't get much of a response. Is there a gardening section on BYC? I feel like most chicken people are probably gardeners as well, but I'm new to the forum and haven't really gotten around too much.

Going to dig those little baby potatoes out tomorrow and make a meal out of them with a nice roasted chicken!

Rainbow layers from McMurry.
A few leghorns, a Barred Rock, a Light Brama, Penciled Hamburgh,a Gold Laced Wyandotte, and some others that have yet to be identified. All really cool birds.

That's a nice mix. If you want to post a picture of the unidentified birds, maybe we can help you identify them. Good luck with your flock.

Alright
