Confounded by Sicilian buttercup chicks shunning their heat cave

Time for a Buttercup update! Both Shorty and Scotty are doing well. However, Shorty is having herself a rather raggedy molt. She may not look much like herself these days, but she hasn't lost her edge. I grabbed a cold-stunned grasshopper this morning and brought it to the run, opened the door, and instantly all thirteen hens were front and center. I squatted and held out the grasshopper, and you guessed it. Shorty beat out all twelve other hens for the prize.

Scotty is ready for the chicken runway while Shorty is barely recognizable as a chicken, but don't tell her that.

Poor Shorty, my Dawn looks almost as ratty but after blowing off all her tail feathers a couple weeks ago the new ones are starting to come in, so there's a very tiny version of her black tail in the rear now.
