Confused about "sticky" chicks (hard amber goo)

See I thought it was shrink wrapped too but then how the heck did I get a sticky chick (to high humidity) in the same hatch as shrink wrapped chicks (to low humidity) boy I really do hate this winter. Good point as my hatches last year where may and later. Thankyou for your help and so sorry about the 1/40 hatch that had to be devastating! I hate shipped eggs alsobut was unavoidable, searched for a yr for welsumer local and nothing. Now I only had one hatch

My last hatch 3 fully developed died days 20/21. When I eggtopsied one had internally pipped but was shrink wrapped so never made more progress. One I believe had drowned because there was still quite a bit moisture. (The third I couldn't figure out.) But the one that had the excess liquid was a larger egg, large enough that he had extra room in the egg. He would roll as I rolled the egg. I think in my case having a shrinked and a drowning was due to probably the porousness of the eggs, and size. My one that pipped was a standard chicken, and the egg may have been a bit more porous, the one that drowned (and the other one was NN) was obviously because of the size and the shell was probably less porous so it had more liquid and didn't expel as fast. At least that was my determination, whether it's right or not is another thing...lol

Sorry you didn't get more to hatch. I'm giving it a year for me to find showgirls local then I will probably take the plunge and order shipped....I just don't want to.....lol

I'm a little late to this thread, was researching a sticky issue I believe I have with a couple ducks incubating right now. But I have to give kudos to @AmyLynn2374 for great explanations! There are so many factors to consider, and getting everything in unison for every hatch is rare. So I say there is a little luck (maybe alot) involved in every hatch! This is why we share our experiences, to try to increase our luck each time! Lol

I had many successful hatches last season.in my Styrofoam incubator with turner (still air). This year both hatches have been problems. I bought a new fancy digital (forced air) incubator and had 1 good hatch in it. I decided to incubate in the Styrofoam & hatch (lockdown) in the fancy one. First hatch they hatched on day 23 & only 4 out of 12. This hatch I had one chick hatch with liquid & bubbles coming out & just lost another to hard goo over its beak and pip hole. I opened the egg up and found lots of Amber goo that dried tight on my hands just seconds after being in the air. I assume this is stick chick so I did research but have found 2 contradictions for answers.
1) humidity to high during incubation
2) humidity to high during lockdown
Last yr I didn't monitor humidity just filed the trays the incubator told me to & monitor the temp. (just moved my hygromitor to the Styrofoam incubator and it's reading 45%) This year I did the same for incubation in my Styrofoam incubator as last year & for lockdown have humidity at 70-80% (can't find a proper answer on lockdown or incubation humidity). I matched up the temps on both incubators to be at 100-101 as I thought the first hatch issues could have been from going to the forced air 99.5 temps from the still air 101.5 -102 temp. FYI I did purchase a fan for the still air so now I can keep both at the recommended 99.5 temp for future hatches.

So after all that rambling just want / need to know what caused the sticky Amber goo & what is the proper humidity for incubation and lockdown. I am in NY state Thankyou

I tried doing the low humidity for the last 3 hatches and Im starting to think it's worse. I might have had the humidity too low. It was around 20. Had 5 out 7 eggs shipped completely develop. Only one survived. The rest were sticky. Did you figure out what hour problem was

Yes I stopped trying to incubate in one and switch to another for hatching. I purchased 2 more incubators and now hatch in 4 separate incubators. Keep the humidity at 30-38% during growth and lockdown at 65%-78%

I am having the same issue with the shrink wrapping. I put my eggs into a hatcher from the incubator. I candled them before lock down amd humidity was perfect. So after no hatches I checked them and shrink wrapped. This is the second time this has happened. Both times it was colder outside. So I'm wandering if when I am candle ing them or moving them to the hatch box the cooler air isn't causing a shrink wrap. Any thoughts????
