Hi all!

I'm new to this forum, but have been lurking for a while. I live in CT and while we don't have chickens we are getting our first little backyard flock of ducks in April. We have a dog, two cats and two baby guinea pigs. Any other CT duck owners here? Any tips or advice?

Thanks!!

Hello, and

I am a proud duckie mamma

I have White Crested and Cayuga.
The only tip or advice I can give is make sure they have plenty of room... I have mine penned (predators are terrible here) and they are soooo messy. So the more room you have the better. Foxes have taken many of my babies over the years

Do you have a pond?

Hi there duckie mamma!! Thanks for the tip!

Our ducks will have lots and lots of room as they will be semi-free ranged. We have a large yard with a large spring fed pond and a 10x10 walkin duckhouse that will be surrounded with poultry fence before the ducklings are large enough to move in.

While this fence won't keep all predators out, we hope the fence plus our dog will do the rest. The Mallards who've made their home in our pond for years have done very well. We plan to keep the ducks in their duckhouse at night and leave them out during the day.

Our dog has been a good backyard watchdog for all things but the redtailed hawk. That is my biggest worry, but the hawk has only gotten two ducks in 11 years, so I am hopeful this won't be a major issue for us.

Thanks for the welcome!!

Hello fellow CT'ers. I am looking for silkie, bantam cochin, bantam frizzles, and or bantam polish chicks. I am looking for chicks that will be hatching around April 11th or older Girls. I had a lot of roosters with my last silkie order and only got ONE pullet

If anyone can help i'd appreciate it. Thanks so much. Shelly

Hi I am in Wolcott, CT. We are looking to get a 3 or 4 chickens as layers and pets, probably EE, but we will see what we can get. Where do you get your chicks?

Hi Daphne16! I grew up in Bristol, not too far from Wolcott. I got my first batch of chicks from MyPetChicken.com because we didn't want that many and I didn't know about any breeders in the area as I hadn't joined BYC yet! But most Tractor Supply stores are carryinb baby chicks right now but the state minimum to purchase them is 6. So, you might be better off ordering online. There are plenty of places to order from. You can always check the buy/sell auction area here on BYC to see if there's someone close enough for you to pick them up from if you don't want them shipped.

Good luck with them!
