Connecticut!

A lot of people will tell you that mom can handle it and keep them warm, and she probably will. However, I had a silkie hatch a few eggs about a month ago. We found one chick dead in the morning. She was not under mom and froze.

My daughter came home from school that same afternoon and another chick was dying/freezing to death. She took it inside and warmed it up and the chick survived. I took all the chicks inside and put them in the brooder that night. Because I had that experience, I won't let my silkies hatch eggs in the cold. However, like I said, there are many that do and the chicks do ok.

I agree this time of year is tough!

I would be nervous too that she is a first time broody and alot of times they need to do 2-3 hatches to learn how to be a good momma. I think this time of year would be a tough learning experience.

If you think she can still remain broody and you want to seperate her in a dog crate in the basement or a semi heated garage where temps maybe be better, You can always try that. Who knows maybe she'll be a great first time momma. I've seen that every now and then

Merry Xmas all!!!

Thanks Pam & Beth I thought it would be a bad idea and I would feel terrible if something happened to the chicks. I have been trying to break her for weeks she just goes back to her corner and sits, I can just about get her to take a sip of water she won't even eat the goodies I bring out in the afternoon.

Two more eggs today, so I guess I have more than one hen laying eggs! They ended up breaking one and eating it, so I took the other one out and put it in with the D'Anvers. Then I cleaned the brooder. I may have to borrow an incubator!!! Lol. Can't wait to get the coop done!
