The boys got into it today.

Ashton got his butt handed to him by his brother Charlie. They've been fine up till today, always hanging out with their sister Dusty. Since it was so nice today I let them all out of the coop/run at 2:30 so they could scratch around the yard a bit. I checked on them at 3:00 and they were fine. I left to do a few short errands when my daughter got home from school and got a call from her at 3:30 that Charlie was beating up on Ashton something fierce. Dragon was able to separate them and Rachel put Ashton in the infirmary. His crown and wattles are all chopped up and the back of his neck is a mess, covered in blood. I cleaned him up when I got home but he's going to be caged up for a week. I think he will be fine but I have no idea what on earth got into them today. They've never fought before. Brownie, the alpha roo, did not get involved in the fracas. I had planned to take both brothers up to the livestock auction last monday (i don't need three roosters) but I never made it up to middlefield. Now I got to fix Ashton up before giving him up! Ugh!

On top of that, our little bantam frizzle, phyllis, has gone broody again! She's the one that hatched the two clowns mentioned above last summer. All that girl wants to do is hatch eggs. She's been hiding in the coop sitting on eggs for the past week. Yesterday she was sitting on 12 eggs, none of them hers. Her tiny fluff butt couldn't cover half of them. She screamed bloody murder when I took the eggs from her. Crazy chicken, wanting to hatch eggs this time of year. And the rest of them are no better, they just enable her by laying eggs in her favorite spot. It's a fowl plot I tell you!

I suppose I'll mark 2 or 3 eggs and let her have at it. If she manages to hatch them I'll turn the heat lamp on in the brooder and see what happens. She is so darned persistant. Worst that can happen is I wind up with 3 more idiot roosters. If you visit my page you can see a picture of little Phylis all fluffed up.

Thank you very much. The girls do seem to be happy now that they have a big run to play in. The wife is happy that the driveway and walkways are poopless. I feel better knowing they are safe from most predators.

This is the "outside"

I am thrilled she is sitting in it because our other hen lays on the floor in the wood shavings.
We made it for easy egg-getting, I don't like bending to the floor daily for eggs
