We are not heating our coop either. I did put the girls in the brooder in the garage for a couple nights when we hit negative numbers, but I'm not too worried at 10 degrees. That's why I got cold-hardy breeds.

BIG NEWS! We got our first egg today. The girls are 22 weeks and 2 days old. It was one of my Easter Eggers. Although I'm not positive, I'm thinking it may have been Matilda, as she was poking around the area where I found it after I took it away. Funny: my husband has always been rather "whatever" about the chickens... now he is practically handing out cigars at his office over the first egg news.

My daughter is registered for the Souther CT 4H Poultry show on April 2. It will be at UCONN. Even if you aren't involved with 4H, come out and cheer all the kids on! We are going to take one of the Welsummers for show, one of the EE's for Production Class and a dozen Wellie eggs (everybody better be laying by that time!)

Anyone want to come shovel my driveway?

Congratulations on your first egg, it's a beauty!!

It's a lovely egg, but not pretty enough to make me want to shovel your driveway!

Oh... You just reminded me that I have to register for that..... If you need to get your birds tested, I have a number for you!!!! I'm so glad your daughter will be going!!!!!!! Is she going to do showmanship? if so, those would be BIG birds to use for it!!!!

CBS- we are going to attempt showmanship. She has been handling our birds since they were day-olds, so she is used to how much they weigh. We are going to have to work on the standing-still-while-waiting-your-turn part and see if she can memorize some of the questions/answers.

Yes.. please let me know the number for the vet. There is only one vet, right? I am going to have to drive the birds to Hartford?

I'll PM you her number. She comes to your house and tests them, then sends them to UCONN to be tested, I think. If you have a fax machine, they can fax it to you, which is quicker, or they'll mail it to you in *I think* 3-4 weeks...... You might as well get all your birds tested since it's only like $4.00 per bird.....

Here's the link to some questions and helpful tips, it's also the registration part... http://web.uconn.edu/poultry/4-H Poultry/show.html

I shoveled the path to the coop, dug out an area about 16x18 of the run just so they have a place to go out for now. My roo popped out the door looked around, saw his shadow and went back inside. Next thing I hear is bawk bawk cluck bawk, then tap tap tap tap ding. My roo comes to the door and hands me a note. The notes says "We are not coming out ,See you in 6 weeks"
