Connecticut!

You should not touch it it will turn black then white!!! If you keep some bag balm or vaseline on them and reapply as needed they should be ok my vet country companions in bethany is great with chickens they have a 24/7 service susan brinton went to the auburn vet school in alabama. I highly recommend her she saved my infected buckeyes life! Everyone should have a can of vetrycin spray its great and no blue dye!!! Its an antibiotic

There was also a recent story in CT about a coop going up in flames because of a heater :-(

I'd never use a clamp-on light in a coop - have had the chickens knock the lights securely attached to the ceiling (the outer covering has come off).  Not sure what you are using.  I was watching an Alaska "homesteading" show the other night and they had chickens on farms with no electricity so we should be able to survive here in CT.  :)

Yeah, I'm nervous about it. Our coop is 8' high....tall enough to stand in. So the light is high and should be far enough away from the chickens so they have no chance of hitting it. I'll take it out on Satuday when it warms up.

All that I have read you should keep as much venting open as possible, not cover it as there is no place for the moisture to escape and that is what causes frostbite on chickens and humans. Tie a wool scarf around your moth and breath through it outside, it will feel 2x colder. Open air coops seem to work very well and they have one entire wall open to the elements.....if you are going the route of a light, a standard 60 watt bulb will give off plenty of heat for the birds. Or up it to 75, no danger of fire.

So keeping the coop light on all night helps? I thought birds don't sleep well in the light. I'm new to chickens and any info helps! I did put some Vaseline on my birchen marans rooster but not my pea combed roosters. He seems to be doing fine as of this morning. My one laying pullet even laid an egg today!
But my birds didn't want to come out until noon today - even though they must have been so hungry! I even cleared a path for them in the run so they didn't have to stand in deep snow. Poor chickies! I know it's too late for this storm, but I ordered some clear tarps. Next time at least their runs won't be inundated with snow!
How are everyone else's chicken reacting to this weather?

2 roo's have some black. Putting on Vaseline and will go to LSB tomorrow and get bag balm. Our coop is a 9 x 9 shed we converted with 20+chickens to keep it warm. The roo's are acting fine but I read when it turns black it is gangrene?

I have an insulated coop but it is well vented and has windows if needed and I clear some paths for them too come out if they want but in this cold they have no interest unless I throw treats out even then they eat and run back in other than that they seem to be fine with no extra heat.

Wow sorry to hear some of your guys roos got frostbite!!! Ive been really slathering on the balm mine did not go out today just the turkey even snow too much for her
remember I told you guys I put an oil filled radiator in coop ive kept it running I have an
8×8 coop with 12 birds l shaped roost I would put vetricyn spray on the frostbitten bits so they dont get infected. If they swell up I would call dr brinton at country companions
