Connecticut!

Greetings fellow nutmeggers!!

Have been stalking this site for about 6 months and finally joined because we received our chicks last week! It's official, we are flock owners! I have so many questions but would just like to introduce myself first. My husband, son and I are from Madison and have 7 chicks from Meyer's Hatchery. We ordered 2 light brahma, 2 EEs, 2 buff orps and one "meal maker" mystery chick. Im quite disappointed as I believe we did not get all the correct chicks. (Im planning to post pics and ask what everyone thinks they are at some point). Might go to the local feed store and add 3 more chicks to make it an even 10 (I am a little obsessed already!).

Thanks in advance for the support

Welcome! I usually have a some semi-rare breed chicks for sale if the feed store doesn't have what you're looking for. Only trouble is they'd be straight run since I obviously can't vent sex, unless you're willing to wait for 5-6 week olds.

Hey there and welcome to chicken-dom!

Hatchery chicks typically aren't bred for looks meaning what you see in the catalog and what you get are probably going to look quite different. Think of a tv commercial for fast food and the way it really looks when you pull it out of the bag.

But there are lots of fellow nutmeggers who breed to each breed standard so you can buy quality chicks locally... plus make a friend who will help you learn! Check around here or on the Facebook local poultry pages to see if there are specific breeds or types you are looking for near you.

Have fun!

thanks for the response... although disappointing about hatchery chicks. I searched the sites and decided on Meyer's because it seemed like it had good reviews and good looking birds from the reviewer's pictures... oh well. Time will tell about my chickies, maybe they are fine and will turn out to be what I ordered.

As to your suggestion to find local breeder; we did contact a few in the area that offered sexed pullets but then got carried away with ordering with a friend who wanted a whole array of rare breeds and she helped us meet minimums for ordering in march. (will avoid that in the future... live and learn) so Meyer's Hatchery was the answer.

Well well well, as fate may have it, the place we were going to get chicks from sold out this past week! I called several other local feed and farm stores and the only ones available are day olds at TSC in Guilford and Old Saybrook... I have been reading reviews, and most are terrible. Poor quality, mostly roos, and limited (if any) selection of breeds. But to be fair, I am sure each individual store is different.

I think this was a blessing in disguise?

So...
Anyone in CT know of sexed pullets available? EEs, wyandotte, BO, speckled sussex? We have 10 day old chicks right now and would like to just add 3 or 4 in the brooder with them so about the same age would be preferable?

This would be perfect, if only they could be sexed. If we did wait for 5-6 week olds, would that be too late to mix them in with the chicks we have now? Would we have to introduce them as if integrating grown flocks?

I don't have any older chicks right now, but my next hatch will be April 4 and 10th if you haven't found what you are looking for before then. I have EE and Olive Egger sexlinks as well as, Blue,Blue Wheaten, and Wheaten Ameraucanas, Black Copper and Blue copper Marans, White and Cream Legbars. I also have Welsh Harlequin ducks. I am on the CT/MA border near the airport off of rt 57.

It would be good to know what breeds you may have available. People can find you if they are looking or some of us may be tempted by what we see on your list.

Chicks that are the same age as your current ones would be preferable. :) However, if they don't get along, I recommend separating them with a piece of hardware cloth or mesh so they can slowly get used to each other, for about a week.
Also, if you ever go onto Facebook, there's a Connecticut Poultry Swap and Chat group, and recently I've been seeing a few people selling sexed pullets of various breeds. Here's a screenshot of one of the posts::
