Ok, what are Point of Lay Pullets?

There's a woman in Sharon who periodically sells her 1 1/2 yr old Golden Comets (not up to the production she needs, but fine for me). I don't know of anyone else over here who sells chickens who are laying. Will keep ears open though.

There is a livestock auction in Durham but that is an hour drive for you.

I have TOO many chickens. I just added 9 RIR that are GORGEOUS and
days away from laying. I've also got other hens at 8-12 weeks.

I'm in Beacon Falls, just south of Waterbury. PM me and take a ride down
if you want. I'm in Sharon all the time and one of my best friends live in Winsted.

BlueMoon, POL (point of Lay) are girls that around 5-6 months, or laying age.

PurpleChicken,
Hi Don,
I've heard of the livestock auction in Durham, I'm interested and would love to check it out some time. The problem is I never go in that direction for errands or friends or whatever. Someday I'll make a special trip. Is it open to the public?
I'd be very interested in a few of the RIR if you'd like to sell them. I don't have the space for any that are 8-12 weeks though. I have one pen with a Buff Orp rooster that is very "active" with the girls and I only have 6 for him now. He tends to favor 1 or 2 and I fear he's going to wear them out, if you know what I mean.
I just looked up Beacon Falls (sorry, had no idea) and it looks kind of close to the Oxford airport. My husband works from there so I'm pretty familiar. How close are you to the airport? Or if you're planning a trip to Sharon any time soon you could come here or we could meet so you wouldn't have to go out of your way.
Any pics of the RIRs?
Thanks, Jen

Howdy All,
I'm brand new to this board but not to chicken keeping. I started with 12 chickens, RI reds, Anconas, Hamburgs, and Buttercups from Murray McMurray in 2002. In 03, I inherited 6 redstars and a roo of unknown breed when my brother-in-law moved.
Only 4 remain now, 3 anconas, and 1 RI red. I actually have to buy eggs now which I find disturbing! I really need to get new chickens. I'm pleased to find so many chicken folk here in the BackYard who live so close to me.
I'm in Oxford CT.

Hi Becky,

I'm also new to this board and new to chickens. In fact, so new I don't have any yet. I'd hope to get a few this spring but I ran into a roadblock, namely the city of Shelton. Zoning now requires 5 acres for any farm type animals. I only have 1 acre, but live next to a 150 acre cattle farm. I 'm going to talk to a neighbor to see if there are any objections to a small (2-3 chicken) clandestine operation. This neighbor is the only one who would be able to see the chickens.

Hi Frank-

If your neighbors are cool with it you should have no problem as long as you don't have any roosters. Barking dogs are much more of a pest. Nothing wrong with a little bit of healthy civil disobedience.

I live in the city and have no problem flying under the radar. I'm just friendly with the neighbors.

Frank,
If you plan to have 2-3 chickens, and your farm neighbor (any chance it's Beasley farm?) is agreeable, I'd bet you'd have no problem being on the down low. I plan to order chicks in a couple of months, and the minimum is 25, more than I need. I can split part of my order with you if you want.
Also, with the small number of chickens you want, you could have a low profile coop in back of your house, and no one would be the wiser. My chickens sometimes roam over to the neighbors, but luckily neighbors don't mind. Of course I butter them up with eggs, and honey from our beehive now and then.

Best, Becky

Becky,
My farm neighbor is Sam Stern, he is on Birdseye Rd. I live on Hubbell La. which is off of Rt 110, just below Birdseye. My yard abutts the lower end of one of Sam's fields. The problem isn't Sam, but my neighbor right behind me. They aren't outside type people so I'm not sure what their reaction would be. In fact I havn't seen them at all since it started to get a little cold. I am planning on a small coop and run, what harm can 3 chickens cause. I don't know if I should talk to them first or just DO IT. Since they arn't outside much maybe they won't even notice. If I talk to them first and they object, I would be uneasy about going ahead with the plan. You know what I mean? Well, I'll be moving ahead with this. The worst that could happen is I'll have a coop (no chickens) but a nice coop. I'll keep you posted.

Frank
