Great question! I'll be waiting for the answer too. I have not planned on using any heat source for the coop since I have read that it's not necessary. I did get a heater plate for my water can though.

My girls like to cuddle so I don`t think I will have a problem. I have electric in the coop so if it is going to be extreamly cold I can put a heater in there but I don`t think that is going to be n

Good Morning CT BYCers!

I have coturnix quail chicks available. They are $2.00 each. If you are not interested in heating them, they will be ready for the outdoors in 3 weeks! They will then be $4.00 each or I will have trios for $10.00 and quads for $14.00. Let me know.

Help spread the word...I have way too many chicks:barnie with more hatching today!!!!

Thanks all!

Jenn

Hi Everyone!!

In winter we have a nice draft free coops and for the LF we put a 2x4 flat roost so they can cover their legs with their plumage for warmth. In the bantie or silkie coop I bed it up with lots of shavings so they can get more fluff around them. If your coop is draft free then you should not have to heat it. Believe it or not the 14 chickens in one coop put off some serious heat when they are closed up together and when I open the door for the AM I can feel the temp difference hit my face. I also do cover my main coop roof with a cover to help cut down on getting the ground all wet and muddy. The most important thing to remember is to make sure your birds have fresh clean ice free water daily. Chickens in the winter need water more than food to keep their warmth and motors going.

Best Wishes to you all this winter season cause it's already snowing here in CT today!!!

Hey we all missed you yesterday!! Celtic Hill and his bro and I hung out at the show and we all said we wished you had gone. It really was not that far. It would have taken you 1hr 30 mins tops to go. Maybe next year your mom will let you go. I will see you at the Jan 2011 Big E poultry show you posted on here. Glad you had a delay!! Beth

Good morning CT BYCers!!!

Nice weather we're having huh?! Anyway I was wondering if anyone was going to the New England Bantam Club Fall Show November 21, 2010??

I volunteered to help but was wanting to meet some fellow BYCers there...also interested in adding to my bantams;)
