Sorry New Chick 203

Its part of our lifestyle. My DH and I are farmers and we live off the land as much as possible. We like to know what goes into our food so we know what we are putting in our bodies. I didn't mean to offend

not offended at all, just grossed out.

I'm right there with you about trying to be close to your food, but I'm still at the stage that my chickens are family.

It's not like I'm a vegan or anything, but I am eating less chicken now that we have them. I wasn't expecting that. And that's why I'm never getting a pig because once you name it... I just can't imagine the horror of a world without bacon.

My friend had a cow named "Sir. Loin"!!!!!! LOL I would never eat one of my chickens, but I still eat them from the store quite a bit.

Hi everyone. LOL! I am not rescuing chickens to my freezer! that gave me a little chuckle. I started the facebook page less than a week ago and just googled the name for ha ha's, and couldn't believe I just came up with the link to this thread, I think I am kind of flattered, (um, not for any particular reason other than I guess it makes me happy that word is getting out)
Here is the deal. I am not some crazy big operation or anything, and I can't even help every chicken, I am just trying to do the best I can for the ones that I can. I am just your average crazy chicken lady (go on youtube and search "crazy chicken lady oops" my lovely husband just posted a video of me locking myself in my coop. that ought to give you a good laugh, lol)
I'm just a backyard chicken owner who is crazy for them as pets. I am a vegetarian (although I don't hold a grudge against meat eaters, I have a healthy respect for people who are that connected to their food, it's just not for me to eat meat, especially not a chicken. I make my dogs eat salmon dog food because I can't stand to buy them food with chicken in it)
Anyway, I guess what happened is I got sick of seeing a particular feed store I frequent having hens stuck in tiny rabbit cages for weeks on end, so I started taking them home , giving them a proper environment and finding homes for them. I did it a few times, then I took in a flock of unwanted pullets and 2 adult hens last week, I rehomed all of them except for 2 of the pullets who've had the snot beat out of them, one has no tail feathers, the other is missing it's whole back. I can see it is becuase it was getting picked on, they had 5 pullets in a rabbit cage. Anyway, I started to connect with alot of people who were interested in giving a bird in need a home, rather than go buy from a hatchery, I was encouraged by the response, and I decided to make it official. I am now actively seeking out chickens who need help, and doing what I can to help.
Like I said, I can't take in every chicken, but I am enjoying helping those that I can. I am enjoying networking with people, meeting like minded people. I hope to network others who maybe can also take some in now and then if I don't have the room, so on and so forth. I've connected with one woman who has an extra coop, and I am building a quarantine coop as we speak (I sort of have something makeshift at the moment)
I looked high and low for some chickens to rescue and didn't see anyone around here doing anything like that, so I guess I decided it might as well be me.
I'm pretty excited to see the name get mentioned, and glad to "meet you all" :) (I have been on this forum PLENTY..I just don't post much. I just registered this name as it seemed the smart thing to do, but I am also registered under the name "chicknotyst" lots of knowledge on this board, very grateful to have had access to it.
and btw, if anyone is interested in two black australorpe laying hens, showgirls, health tested, they are stuck in a tiny rabbit cage at the feed store right now and I am trying to find them a home! They cost $20 each (not my charge, it's what the store is charging) I've been paying just to get them out of there, but the more I take, the more they put in there :-(
You can see them on my fb page I couldn't post the link here but if you go on facebook or google "coleen's chicken rescue" you'll see it

That is pretty impressive that you've only been up for a week, googled your name, and saw it though! Us CT BYC'rs are on top of chicken ad thingys including craigslist

But, like I said before you posted on here. It's good to have someone out there looking after chickens

Hoping its not a freezer camp type of thing is a bonus!

I used to take in unwanted birds all the time but, at the rate I'm hatching out chicks I think I'm at full capacity at the moment and for awhile
