Luke13:34 :

Took the babies away from the broody mama today. Mama is doing fine and has her own cage/area of the run until I get the banty coop done. First really good look I got of the babies. Three are in the brooder with the others and doing fine. The smallest one, however, was getting picked on by the older hatchlings (the ones that have been in the brooder for a couple of weeks because they hatched out earlier than the other four). So.. I've got the baby in an all-natural "baby sling" at the moment ...

Hello, my 5 day old partridge rock chick seems not as active as the other 5 day-ers - and when they're intently pecking at the food, she seems to randomly peck at whatever, as if she can't figure out what's food-am I imagining this? Do some chickens need more encouragement to find the food, and if so how do I do that?

Jenn, yes some may need a helping hand to guide their beak a couple of times to realize where the food and water is. Keep an eye on it for the first 1-2 weeks of life. Also don't be shy with giving them a chopped up hard boiled egg, a small clump of grass with roots and dirt attached, and a tsp of sugar in a quart of water for the first fews weeks too

good luck!!

It's a cochin that is split to Lav. Does the Lav have hair on it's legs too?

Mark here from Cromwell CT. Hope to move my 8 Buff Orpingtons into the new, very expensive, very time consuming, very cool "CackleBerry Castle" this weekend. The girls are about 6 weeks old and getting so big and rambunctious in their cardboard brooder. I took plenty of pictures of the construction progress and will post on my byc page when I get a chance (after the coop is done!).
