Birds in Bethel

My first 4 chickens were Rhode Island Reds.

1 of the 4 peeped constantly - I worried also. Nothing was wrong with the baby -it was a rooster.

congrats beth it was alot of fun seeing all the different birds debbie just loved those giant buffs.today i got home from work an look at what i cought in our trap in the old duck house

I'm home from the long Chicken Weekend and beat. But, I couldn't go to bed without showing appreaciation to my babies!! I'm so proud of them and PamB's daughter Lexi!!! She did an awesome job at the show!!!!

Well, I did it. I processed my first bird today, an OE cockerel who was making a heck of a racket every morning, pre-dawn. There were some prayers, and a few tears, but it's done. And aside from the emotional aspect of it, it was much less of an ordeal than I thought it would be. I followed the directions here: http://ramblingredneckmom.blogspot.com/2011/04/how-to-process-chickens-at-home.html However, I bought a traffic cone and cut the top part off to make it wider (home made killing cone), rather than hang him from his feet. It was really much quicker than I had assumed it would be. He had a very good, albeit short, life, and now I can say that he also had a good death. Still, a somber day on Happenstance Acre.

I think I'm gonna go play with the goslings...
