You just made me realize I am definitely not a newbie anymore.

Yes, I did freak, with every chickie I've lost to predators. It is a painful learning experience--who knew that predators can fit in the tiny inch-big space left where the two closed doors don't-quite-meet the outer wall of the coop? I do, now know that mink/weasels/rats all can. I hope you never have to learn this way, and benefit from my (and others') ordeal.

It was a cold one this morning. water was frozen and made the switch to the heated bowl. I need a couple more bales of hay to pile around the coop and I'll be ready for winter. Everyones molts are just about done so they seem ready too. Is everyone else ready for our first Nor-easter?

Where do you guys get your hay bales? I don't know where to go other than overpriced little shops that sell decorative stuff. And is it hay or straw?

In the past I've gotten them from a local farmer or from
Benedict's Home and Garden in Monroe if I was in the neighborhood.


This year I'm getting them from our local orchard.

I get mine at Meriden Feed and Supply. I would guess Tractor Supply should sell them as well. If you have a stable nearby, ask them if they would sell you a bale.

I have an inexpensive heated dog dish from agway that works fine, but it's small and needs topping off often, and the subtle heat makes the water evaporate too. I think if you were to spend a little more you could get something that could hold more.

x2. But I need one that is not electric-powered. We don't have power way out back, where the coop is, so I guess I'd need a battery-powered water heater.
