Considering chickens-any advice?

Welcome to BYC! You've received a lot of good advice and links, and there's probably very little more than I can add to it to help you make a decision on whether or not you should get chickens. As much as I love chickens, I have to admit that they are not for everyone. Some people might not like the noises they make, or the smell or occasional cleaning of poop, or having to go out in cold weather to feed and water them, or having to spend money on feed, and probably a dozen other things that I could mention, or might not even think of because it's not a concern to me personally. But I have been raising chickens for over 50 years and I can honestly tell you that it is one of the most rewarding things that I've ever done in my life. Chickens have been my passion, my friends, at times even my livelihood (and on rare occasions a headache)), but I have enjoyed them immensely, and cherish the experiences of having raised them. The decision on whether or not to get chickens is yours of course, and I wish the best for you in whatever you decide. Good luck.

Thank you all! I managed to convince her, and we've already bought the brooder supplies and ordered the chicks, and we're going to look at coops tommorow, as we won't need it until they're a few weeks old.

We order four baby chicks from mypetchicken, all different breeds.

We ordered one Bared Rock, one Buff Orpington, one Speckled Sussex, and one Easter Egger. They're coming in the mail next week and I'm so excited!::D:D:D

Congratulations! It's always exciting getting those first chickens and you have chosen a nice selection of hardy, dependable breeds for beginners. Good luck with your new flock. Enjoy!

don't use chicken wire for anything!! It is useless against predators. Read the predators section and you will find that many many deaths come from...something tore the chicken wire away or went through it. Use hardware cloth.
