I’ve raised chickens for several years. I gave guineas a shot but they ran off to become one with the forest. But I’ve never tried quail. The hatchery I frequent always has them and they look...so...CUTE. I’ve been nagging my mom to let us try a while ago but now I reeeeaaaaally want to try. What is the best breed to work with being new to quail? What’re they like as backyard birds?

Coturnix quail are probably best for a beginner. They are hardy and calm (for quail).

Don't expect your quail to act like chickens. They don't roost, they don't go into a coop at night. You will need to make sure that they are in an escape proof, predator proof pen. If you want to raise them as close to their natural habitat as possible, they will be on the ground, though many people keep them in raised pens or rabbit hutches.

If you have time, take a read through the Quail Hatch-a-long thread. It's huge, but there is a wealth of information in there.

I wouldn’t expect them to. That’s the beauty of the animal kingdom. I want to learn more about our backyard feathered friends. (Especially if I want to work as a poultry and large animal vet)

I have quails and they are mostly food driven. they'll love you if your give them raspberries and strawberries. :lau

Yep, Coturnix are the easiest IMO. And they mature so fast — from egg to laying in 2 months.
BUT.... they have birdie odor like no other species ever. They have a unique funk — not just the poo, the birds themselves smell. If you can handle musky little birdies I’d still recommend them.
