Consolidated Kansas

Admire is in the south west corner (off set about 1/4 mile) of the intersection of highways 56 and 99. The Admire turnpike exit is a few miles east of Admire on 56. A little bit of local info - the little lake across 56 from the Admire exit is called Casper lake because of its shape as seen from the turnpike.

Shep - where can I find information about that meteorite? I have heard many stories about it but have not been able to find any real information. Just stories. So it has been recovered? And I had heard it was in Allen. Interesting

We are actually about halfway between Admire and Emporia. Hwy. 99 is closed for a bridge replacement, so getting to Admire from here is an adventure -- west to the Allen road and then north on gravel. We are actually a little closer to Reading. We have an Emporia phone number and an Admire postal address. If you go north out of emporia on hwy 99 and follow the hwy, you will get to admire (in about 18 miles) when the bridge isn't out.

Those of us in the Emporia area should get together for coffee sometime. There seem to be several of us.

Houston we have a complete hatching. Looks like all but one are going to be black and white. One White. Not sure what to do with baby ducks this time of year. I am thinking a small caral in the chicken house where they can get food and water for a few days then an out side pen where they can range a little as they grow up. Baby ducks are so cute!.

Congratulations on a great hatch!!

Those ducklings will need heat just like baby chicks. And remember they are not water proof until they get their feathers in either. They will chill very easy if they get wet and they will get wet just drinking their water.

If you want some tips for brooding ducklings, I have a few if you would like them.

Ummm, anyone interested in some half grown muscovy ducks???

I of course would welcome any help. I am planing to let mother white rock brood them. I have found a rabbit cage that is about 2.5'x 2.5' I was going to put this in the chicken house to keep mama and babies seperate from my hens and roos. With an additional heat lamp to give them all a warm spot. If these babies grow as fast as their parrents I expect them to be big very fast. I have a dog run in the yard but will put a close up night cage inside but only after their big enough to leave the chicken house. Lots of fluffy hay and food and water. How does that sound?

On another note I thought my ducks had quit laying until I found egg shells in the chicken yard in back. Little sneakers were hiding their eggs. Until a raccoon found them. So today going to clean out the brush so that I can get at the nest next time before the raccoons do.

Here's a link to a local forum about the Admire meteorite discovery and my comments following: http://flyoverpeople.net/v-web/bulletin/bb/viewtopic.php?t=5237&highlight=admire+meteorite

It
is unlikely that "all" of the pieces have been recovered - so if you know where to look and know what you're looking for, well, it's worth almost the same as gold (breaking records today nearing $1,400/oz.)!
Might be some "grit" sized pieces that would make those birdies worth a lot more! Stranger things have happened - finding a diamond or gold piece in a chicken's gizzard has happened on more than one occasion.

Here's an updated link to another related meteorite story: http://www.americanprofile.com/article/20536.html (The shelter belt in the background of the photo is where I grew up.) The Emporia Gazette did a story on the Admire meteorite, but I can't find a link at this moment.

Here's an earlier article about both the Brenham and Admire meteorites: http://www.meteorite-times.com/Back_Links/2006/February/Meteorite_People.htm

Steve
Arnold has returned to the Admire area to discover more in the last two years.

Mikeksfarmer - sounds like you got the bases all covered.

Will you have the cage off the ground? That is the main thing I have found is to have the water on wire and off the ground to help the bedding and ducklings stay dry. Makes a huge difference plus keeping them clean. And the warm mama of course works very well also.

Shep - Thanks for the information! I will go through the links later (slow dial up). Unless the location is in that information, just what is the area it was found in?
