Consolidated Kansas

WichitaKidd, Your coop is looking great, good job! I can't wait to see it all finished with the run & all & just in time for your chickies to arrive.

Hawkeye, I just love what you're doing with your brother's coop, it's going to be adorable, of course since you're doing it.

KarenS, Wow that's a bunch of chicks! They're so cute too, I can't wait to see them when they get feathered out. That's funny about Faster being ornery like that! I was over your way this evening, I went to Derby to pick up a dog run I bought to use when I get my breeder coop built. So now I have cinder blocks for the foundation, windows, & pens, now we just need to start building. Maybe as soon as we go pay for tags & all for the new car DH will release the money for me to use for the coop. Hawkeye, I may have to ask for your expertise on some things along the way. I have a general idea of what I want to do, but actually doing it may be something different. Maybe next time I come over your direction I can come by & see your chicks & meet you in person.

Well it's been a really busy day & I'm not done yet, still got to finish packing to leave in the morning. Hey guess what, my son is actually coming in the morning from OKC you all to get his junk out of my garage, yay! I couldn't really believe it when he told me he was coming & he said well you told me I had to have it out by the end of the month, well he missed it by one day, oh well. When did he ever listen to me before? Never. Anyway we have a surprise for him, while he's here DH wants him to help move our old furniture out to the garage so it will be out of the way for the new stuff to come in. That way if I don't get rid of it right away it at least won't be in the way in there. I know my son is not going to be happy about having to help with that because it's going to be a be-atch getting that couch out of there. The moving company had one heck of a time getting it in when we moved here. The people who built this house just weren't thinking, about a lot of things, but the entry if ridiculous. You have to come in the door, dealing with posts on the porch first of all, then coming in the door & turning sharply to the left to get in through the entry & into the main part of the house, it's just awful. When we have to get things upstairs we just drive them around to the back door & bring them in over our bed to get them in there. Nothing here is easy.

I won't be on here much the next couple days since I'll be enjoying my new car. I can't believe it's going to be 90 degrees this weekend where I will be, geez in April no less, not good. We have a cool front coming Tues. & by then it might feel nice. I'm certainly not ready for 90 degrees yet, wow.

My momma rabbit is doing well taking care of her 5 tiny babies. I can't wait until they start getting some fur & I can take some pics of them. Some of them are so very tiny it's kind of scary, but they're really active, so I guess they're OK. She sure did pull lots & lots of fur & made them a big cloud of fluffy softness to lay on.

I was so busy today I really didn't have much time to deal with Lily today. She did get in trouble again for stealing kittens, this time I found her with 3 of them up on the hill. She took them all the way up to the top of the hill by where our old truck sits. I went looking for them & just listened for them crying & that's where I finally found them. Gosh, these poor little things if they survive they will be warrior cats, they surely will be tough if they survive all of this. I really yelled at her for taking them & I think she knew I was really mad at her because she kind of hid for quite awhile this afternoon. I don't think Jas ever quite knows what to do with Lily, she tries to show her how to act I think, but Lily just has her own ideas.

This morning we had a total of 38 hatched % Aloha chicks and more were pipping and zipping!
Those chicks are too cute!!!!! I already miss the small chicky stage. I can see why ya'll like raising so many of them! :)

Took a picture of my garden this morning. Rosemary is growing on the left and Lavender is at the bottom of the pic. The center row of huge leaves--- I have no idea what that is! LOL I totally forgot what I planted last year. But i know it's a perennial of some kind-- something that flowers. I remember big red flowers last year. Thinking about ripping them out to make room for raddishes. :)

That's a great garden!! Love it! :)

He did trick me into thinking we didn't have an angle grinder for about 6 months until I asked for one for Mother's Day. Then he relented and told me we had one. He didn't want me killing myself on it. As it was, I did give myself a 3rd degree burn and nearly took off the tip of my finger with it. So.. it's all in the doing.

(you can't bet I learned my lesson on that one!)

I had to laugh at that (not at YOU), only cuz my DH took the staple gun away from me for years cuz I'd hurt myself with it. He doesn't like seeing me use power tools at all either. LOL. At least it gets him to using them!

Coop Update!.

Awesome looking coop!! That's going to be beautiful when it's finished!! Your birdies are going to love it!

Yeah, they are tiny when they are born! I can't wait to see pics when they start getting their fur and opening their eyes!

Today DH and I did the tour around town and stopped at Orschlens and TSC to get ideas for the coop project next week. I think we have a pretty good plan in place. It's finally all coming together. He's wanting to spend a lot more money than I ever thought I would, but I agree with him that we have to do it right the first time. Only problem we are running into is a gate. The cattle panel is only 16ft long and the run will be 20x20, so I have four feet of space on each side that we are going to put in a gate. Finding a 4 foot gate is not easy. Most are either 3 or 6. We might have to build one. I also bought a really nice 55 gallon rain barrel at Orschlens for 35 bucks! It has an attachment on the bottom to add a hose, so my plan is to fill it up with water, so I don't have to haul water or drag the hose down to the coop to fill up water bowls. Plan is to finish up clearing out the mulch tomorrow and finishing up the hardware cloth around the fencing. At least it's been beautiful outside! It better not rain next Wed-Fri!

Sapphireblue-This might be worth checking out ASAP...
http://topeka.craigslist.org/grd/2931376399.html

This looks like a HUGE male. If you are going to add an older dog, it is better to do it while the pup is young, in my opinion. The older dog will accept it better and teach and protect it.

Of course it is not recommended to add an adult male to an already established adult male. They very often will not get along and fight ferociously.

He is a beauty! I think I want to hold out for a female, though.

Sapphire, I don't know if you've been on the Farm Animal Swap on FaceBook, but there are two adult GP's on there needing new homes. One is a year old & one is two years old, you might check those out. Both of them said they had been around livestock. The year old one I know the girl was needing a home for him ASAP because she had lost her job.

Yes, I'm on there everyday, lol. I have checked into all of those dogs. I've only heard back about one of them. Again, all males and I kind of want to see if I can find a female.

Sapphire don't worry about going backwards. Personally if you really think you need a second dog I would just get another pup. You have to be careful getting older dogs. I think Josie got a one in a million. You can look around for adult dogs but you have to be very careful about what you get. Especially in your situation, you don't' want to get one that has been solely left in with the big animals and not handled by humans and kids. You want one that will protect and tolerate your kids. Some of these that spend their whole life with the critters wouldn't be safe with children I'm afraid.

I think she did, too :) And I agree, gotta find one that's good with chickens and kids.

Coop Update!
Haven't posted any updates on my coop project for a while. Rather than try to catch you up with the various things I've done over the past 2 weekends, I'm just going to jump ahead to where things are at today. Spent just over 9 hours working on the coop today. Did all the trim work you see in the photo & the entire roof from the sheeting up. Have never done roofing before & am glad I don't do it for a living. I'm feeling every nail I drove today.

All that is left before it's completely finished is to build & hang the people door & the pop door & to build the nest boxes. Plus a little touch up paint here & there. Can't wait for it to finally be done.
Then, once I recover from this build it's time to make the run. Should be able to knock that out in a weekend since there is a lot less to build.

AND, as a bonus, the chicks I ordered online are scheduled to ship THIS WEEK!
More to come...

I love it! Hope I can get mine done that fast :p

Hawkeye- Your brother's coop is so cute! Can't wait to see it when it's all done.

Today was pretty productive. We got the garden area tilled and compost tilled in. Got the chicken pen we built last month (that blew down in the crazy wind storm) disassembled, fixed and patched, and got the frames reassembled.

Tomorrow, we start on the coop. Going to lay the foundation bricks around the edges and hopefully get all the walls framed. I especially want to get the back wall finished so we can attach the previously mentioned chicken pen to it for the back support. The 4x8's we originally used were too flimsy and broke in the crash.

Next on the agenda is planting the garden and building gates for the new fenced in acreage. Then locating an auger to rent/borrow so we can dig the post holes for the fence, once the utility locators come out and do their thing. Then we're having a fence raising with friends and a cook out when it's all done.

Wow....still have a loooooong way to go. I hate waiting, lol!

Wow! WichitaKid-that is a really nice looking coop. I am SO wanting to build another barn, but with a move pending sometime within a year it doesn't make much sense for me to do it right now.

Trish-Have a fun, safe trip.

Tomorrow is my surgery, so I won't be on here for a few days. I've been trying to get things ready so it isn't so hard for everyone else to take care of things while I'm not on my feet.

I'm so glad I've got folks that have volunteered to be here to help while I'm gone. I'm also glad I got that incubator with the auto water system and the turners so they won't have to mess with it. It shouldn't need anything until the eggs are ready for lockdown other than maybe refil the reservoir once I got some stuff cleaned out of the barn yesterday, and I got the roost put in the shed for my new turkeys. OH! I am getting 2 more royal palm hens. These are at point of lay and the price was right. Since they say one tom can take care of about 5 hens, I didn't want this guy to be too lonely or overwork this hen or something.

So today I am hoping to get my coop completely cleaned out.

I guess it's not THAT bad in there, but it's not a job I enjoy. I've got a few chicks I'm keeping that have outgrown their section of the brooder, but are still too small to put in a grow out pen, so I think I'll put them in one of my stacking cages for now. I think the others can go in the stock tank brooder. That will put all of them in the same area and make it easier to take care of, other than the little partridge wyandotte chicks that are still in the basement in the "nursery brooder."

Yesterday I got some stuff cleaned out of the backyard. It's been piled there since we had that windstorm that took the siding off the house, the barn, and part of another barn along with about anything that wasn't bolted down. The back yard looks better than it has in several years. Part of the mess was an area I put a makeshift fence around for a garden last year, and then I wasn't able to keep up with the weeds. It was a BEAST of a hot summer, and the only time I was home that I could do anything in the garden was during the hottest part of the day, so I didn't keep up with it. I don't think I will have a vegetable garden this year. I just don't have enough time with my work schedule and all, but I sure am wishing I could plant SOMETHING! I may just stick some tomatoes and peppers in with my flowers and let that be enough.

We went morel mushroom hunting yesterday. People are finding them around St. Joseph, so I thought we might have some. It's so much earlier than usual because of all the warm weather. We didn't find any, but the conditions were right that it could be any time. Since I won't be on my feet for a while I guess I'm going to miss out on that this year. We are so far north in Kansas we are one of the last areas of the state for them to come up.

FABULOUS job!!!! It looks great!! How are you going to build the nest boxes? Looks like this will be done before your chicks are ready to come out of the brooder! YAY!

Yahoo!!!!

I was out back washing off the shelf liner I have under the baby geese and heard the male peacock yelling for the girls. I saw them come in last night and roost above the barn in a tree. So I walked all the way around the barn until I saw them inside the horse trailer. I snuck up, pulled the bungee cord I had holding the door, and I caught all three of them. Praise the Lord!!!!!
I am so excited. I need to crawl in the trailer later and see if I can get the gate in between them opened so they can really be together. I sure hope my wiring job on the trailer works and there isn't a place they can get out!!! I might not be so lucky next time.
My neighbor was burning pasture behind me and to the West of me yesterday and I was really afraid he would spook them out of the area entirely. Maybe it worked just the opposite. Or maybe getting that trailer moved away from those noisy guineas helped. At any rate I am thrilled beyond thrill. I've got to come up with a quick plan for a building and a pen now. No more chance taking for me.
Josie, I think you got a one in a million dog there. Do you have any idea how lucky you are??
Marshmallow keeps taking the pup out for adventures. It worries me to death. She has gone South of the property and showed her the pond on the neighbors land to cool off in. I wish she had just taken her to my pond! Yesterday they brought me home some deer sheds. That's the first time that has happened. I was thrillled. I don't like mounted antlers or animal heads but I would love to have a collection of sheds. Just another 10-20 to go!
David your coop is beautiful! What a great job you did!
Hawkeye your brother's coop is looking great as well. How come I haven't managed to get anything done on my breeding trailer yet? It seems like I work all day long and just never get to my projects.
I was so busy yesterday I never even had a chance to get back on here after late morning. I have another big group of ducks hatch and got them moved to the duck pen in it's new location. It isn't very handy but at least they have lots of green grass and shade for now. I want to rework the area it was sitting that really stinks right now, and build a patio so I can sit under the tree and watch the Mandarin ducks. Yet another project to work on!
I should have married a farmer with lots of equipment and lots of energy so I could do all of this stuff.
Yesterday I crawled up in attic above the old garage where DH has his shop and the chickens have the other side. I had to belly crawl on a little piece of plywood to get around. It stunk so bad up there. I found 5 hens sitting on eggs and 2 hatched chicks. I unloaded an old pile that had lots of nasty rotten eggs and told DH to take them out as far as he could to get rid of them. I didn't mention not to shake the bucket while he was walking. It was like someone dropping a match in a bag of fireworks I guess. He shook the eggs and they all exploded. He rinsed the bucket and brought it back to me but it wreaked so bad I told him to just throw it away. I caught the chicks and then two of the hens jumped and flogged me in the head. Thank goodness I saw them coming and ducks my head down. Talk about stirring up dust.Immediately had an asthma attack from that.
After I recovered and climbed back up I got under the other three hens and got their eggs. About a third had chicks in different stages of development and the other 2/3rds either weren't developed or had gone bad. I have no idea how many will still be viable, but moved them to the incubator. Then after shooing the hens out again DH put chicken wire up to keep them out. I sure hope it works. There are a few spaces but I doubt they will bother them. I would guess between the rotten eggs and all the others there were at least 6 dozen up there. I think there were 42 that I ended up putting in the incubator. Most of them are silver pheonix eggs mixed with ??. My pheonix roo stays out with the other pheonix hens in the hen house so I doubt any of them would be purebred. But they make good layers and sitters mixed like that.
Took my second shower and cleaned out my nose then.
Then I moved the third GQF in and relocated them so they pointed the right direction to open them and control them. I haven't checked the temp on the newer one yet and have never used it before. I guess that will be on today's priority list.
Ivy, I get a nasty scum on the water in with my auto waterer in the GQF. I really don't like it because it is near impossible to unhook and rehook again, and after a couple times the hose gets weak and you have to cut the end off and start over. I think it is more a scum from the chick dust and fuzz than anything else. But it is nice to not have to constantly refill the reservoir.

It looks like everyone is keeping busy, I hope you all have a great day & a great weekend, enjoy the weather before the rain & cool front get here. I've got to get DH on helping me get the other rabbit hutch together when we get back so I can get the rest of the rabbits moved outside, at least the ones without tiny babies. I'm having to run a fan in the garage already because it's getting too hot in there, ugh. Next I'll be hearing complaining about me running that fan. Well better get a move-on here. Danz, I'll send you a PM when we're ready to leave, it's going to be a little later than planned, my son sent me a text that he's not going to be here till probably 11:30 then the guys have to move furniture to the garage, that will take awhile. I just don't think I can help move that stuff so we need to do it while muscles is here to help. My back & shoulder just won't take heavy lifting like that any more & that couch is a sleeper & weighs a ton. "See" you all probably Monday night.

Ivy, I'm praying you'll have a great surgery and recover quickly! Bionic Farmgirl!!

Danz, I can't say how happy I am you got them- that's just amazing! I know how hard it is to catch peas, and you scored big time- just consider moving some of your chickens out of one of your bigger houses and giving it over to the peas- that might be the way to get them secure quickly.

Sooooooo relieved for you!
