I keep forgetting: I think my "Ameraucanas" are probably EEs; they have greenish legs with yellow pads on the bottoms of their feet. EE, right? I don't care if they're not official Ameraucanas, but I'm curious.

Wow.. I can't believe we got it finished! It's been a long 4 days, but at least we even got the brooder room back to it's original state! yeeehaww! We opened up the inner run to let the girls out for the first time. Took the ducks about an hour to come out - the chicks never did. I guess they like it too much in there! LOL We needed to find a place to put all the dirt from building the pond, so I had DH put it outside the run and planted sunflower in there - natural shade!




That's about as far out as the chicks got today. Maybe tomorrow they will leave the inner run.


The ducks almost immediately knocked the pump spitter tube from the filter - we had to fix that after this first jaunt in the pool.
Here is a video of them checking it out and playing for the very first time. Goose only went in a few times. At the end, notice her "walking on water to avoid the ruckus" - it's hilarious!

Tweety-WOW! Very nice job on the duck pond and all the pens. Those ducks have GROWN! It's hard to believe those are the same ones you posted the pics of when you got them.

Cherwill-It's really hard to say for sure about your ameraucana/easter eggers. Without a good picture I wouldn't want to say for sure. However, I can assure you if they came from hatchery stock that they are technically easter eggers. I don't know of a single hatchery that sells pure ameraucanas. Also, if their feather coloring does not match the description in the APA standard then they are easter eggers.

I have pure ameraucanas from reputable breeders, however, when I mix some with my marans in one of my next breeding projects the result will technically be easter eggers, or more specific, olive eggers.

I really don't think it's all that big of a deal except it's too bad hatcheries sell mix breeds as "ameraucanas" simply because they lay a colored egg. It's very misleading to people who then swear they have ameraucanas. After all, the hatcheries ought to know what they sell, right? I've seen some folks get very defensive about the issue.

It's a matter of what you want, and if you are not trying to show them or sell them as purebred ameraucanas then it probably doesn't matter that much anyway.

Danz and Ivy, you guys crack me up! I've just finished reading another one of my kid's books. I love to read but I'm really antsy to get back on my feet. I have no patience.

Tweety, that is a fantastic set-up you've put together.

Ivy, my chicks came from Orscheln's, so I guess that answers that question! I really just wanted the colored eggs, so it's not a big deal to me. I wonder why they get away with calling them that, though. What would be so bad about calling them EEs?

Karen, your DD should go into business. Those are some adorable photos. I'm really loving her use of the calender backgrounds and the poses she gets.

Hello all,

Lillith/Leroy is having diarrhea. Smelly smelly loose diarrhea. I don't know what could or would cause that in a 4 week old chicken, I have given a couple of the freeze dried mealworms, and they went out last weekend, but other than that I am unsure. Should I be worried?

Ivy be really careful. You don't want to over do it. A friend of mine had a knee replaced and thought he was doing great but then tried to use it too much and had to have it replaced again. He ended up retiring after that because his new knee did really lousy after that. Just don't want to see you do too much since you are having great success.

RVroman have you changed their food at all? A good preventative would be to separate him/her if you can and give him a little plain yogurt mixed with his food. Also if you have some, add a little diatomaceous earth. He could have gotten worms. That will cause diarrhea. It could just be growing pains.
