Consolidated Kansas

ok so here is a photo update, my 3-4 week old babies!!!

Here is Lillith, or Leroy, the jury is still out. Pretty sure its Leroy, but I don't really know what to think.

They are all getting so big, I can't wait to get then into their coop, DH and I are going to be working on it non-stop this week!
Wow! I'm pretty sure that's a Leroy. S/He is only 3-4 weeks old? None of my 5 week old have a comb like that! TeeHee.
Here's a pic of Onxy (She's my barred rock behind Ruby, the Buff) with the larges comb of all four and it's not nearly anything like that:

Yep, thats pretty much what I am thinking, that and my husband keeps telling me he is hearing some wierd new noise coming from the chickens, I think he may be stretching his crowing muscles...

OH Drat! I just wiped out what I had written.
RVRoman, don't give up. You just never know until they crow for sure. Let me know if you end up with a rooster or two you can't have. I don't remember where you live but if you can come get one I'll donate you a pullet or two at that time.
I had a pretty good day even though I didn't get things done I wanted. I had a call this morning and sold 6 dozen Seramas eggs for a little bit of nothing. This guy was wanting to hatch them for his kids. I haven't been hatching the Seramas so I didn't lose anything but a few egg cartons, and the girls are still sitting on lots of them.
I moved a bunch of barn eggs to the hatcher today. I think out of about 50 eggs at least 40 of them were good. I guess we'll see what hatches.
Then I had a guy drive up from a town a couple hours away. He bought all of my anconas and a few of my cayugas. I traded him 10 pekin ducklings for 10 of the anconas and sold him the rest. I didn't make nearly as much money that way but I've been wanting to get some pekins going and haven't found any reasonably priced ducklings. Yeah well that is the way I am down sizing. ..... adding yet another breed to my menagerie!!
I'm worried my Salmon Faverolle roo isn't any good. I haven't had any faverolle chicks for quite a while. Not that I've been hatching their eggs per say but I'd have thought I would get some here and there. That would be really disgusting. I knew there was a reason I thought the rooster that died this winter was the best one! I'd hate to have to buy chicks just so I could have a rooster especially when I think of all the roosters I sold for a little of nothing.
DH finally moved the miter saw over to the trailer for me so I can start cutting boards. That means progress on the chicken trailer.
He has been working on the post and post holes for my other building so I'm not bugging him about too much. It will work fine until I need the nail gun. I can wait until he goes back to work before I absolutely need to have it over there. I'm thinking of cutting some holes in the walls and installing some storm windows. All of the windows in the building are pretty much useless. I am going to need a lot more air movement in there. I have some storms I was going to enclose a deck with but the deck is still not built so I might as well use them.

Just checking in really quick! We had a great Easter! Spent the morning at church and then spent the rest of the day with family.

Tweety-- your set up looks great! Love the pond! That is really cute! Maybe later on, you might want to add more pea gravel around it as they muddy it up. Love the frog spitting water! I'm partial to frogs. :) Sorry to hear one of your ducks is beating up on the others. I had a chicken doing that a while back. I took her out of the coop and put her in a kennel in my garage for about 3 days and it fixed her right up! No more bullying! I'd remove the duck for a day or two and see what happens.

We got home and Seymore (turkey) was gone! I looked everywhere. I was so upset. I got on my boots and decided to go look in the tree line (I'd already looked out in the back pasture and down by the pond) and I kept calling to Seymore. I got into the trees and went quite a ways and she stuck her head up out of some brush when I called! Then she went back down again. I figured she was stuck or maybe had been drug in there. I crashed thru the brush and was dragging off limbs and wood. I pulled her out of the hole and looked down to see what was wrong and NOTHING was wrong-- the idiot bird was building a nest in there! She was trying to become coyote bait out where the coyotes live! What is WRONG with these birds?! Anyway, she is back in her pen in the garage for the night. She promptly laid me an egg in there, too.

Ok, so I just got done web chatting with my parents, we were comparing our chickens, hers are 1 week younger than mine. Anywho, while we were comparing, my dog Casey came up, HE is the biggest mama hen I have ever met, and started whining until I put Lillith/Leroy (from here on out named L) on his back, not even kidding. He then walked in circles while L just sat there, it was the funniest thing I had seen all day, I don't know which, but either Casey was taking L for a walk, or L was taking Casey for a walk. Just walking around the living room with L hanging out taking in the scenery, HILARIOUS, gonna have to record it next time!

I'm confused...My hopeless eggs are day 6 in the incubator, not sure how long the hen had been sitting on them before I took them, and my 2nd batch is day 4. I candled tonight and they are all almost half full/dark. Does this mean they're bad or are they good? The illustration on Chicken Chatter and Kansas Poultry Swap, doesn't match up with what I see.
Man! Sarge was barking his head off a minute ago! I think something got too close to the pen or something. Whatever it was startled him at first, 'cause he yelped, then he just started letting out his "big dog" bark. I peeked out, but didn't see anything. He must have scared off whatever it was.

Why is my font so wonky???

We got the back wall of the new coop framed today. Tomorrow, I'm on my own again to work on the front wall. At least I have all my lumber cut now, it should go fairly quick.

Have a great day all!

And forgot...
Glad you're back Ivy!

Tweety, the pen and pond look great, loved the video :)

Josie, Molly looks mah-velous! And the pup is super cute, to boot!

Danz, sounds like you're taking 2 steps forward and one step back, lol ><

Sapphire-It sounds like that hen may have been sitting on the eggs longer than you thought. Those eggs might be within a week of hatching. Don't give up on them (unless they start to stink or something!)

Danz-I'm so glad to hear you are getting started on your chicken trailer and the runs. Let's hope the weather cooperates so you can get them to a useable stage. Checoukan is still getting ready to build her new barn. Her DH has changed some of the plans, but she just goes with the flow. Overall, I think it will turn out pretty nice and she is happy so far.

Tweety-Give that ornery duck a few days time out in isolation so it can cool it's jets a little.

Hope everyone had a nice Easter. My DH and I went to get some hay equipment. I just rode along, but it was a 3 hour trip and I couldn't get my knee comfortable the whole time. When I got home I was tired, sore and totally worn out. The rest of my day was shot. Guess I should have stayed home.

My royal palm tom, Mr. Gobbles (not very original, huh) had at least two wild toms answering him back this morning. There was an awful lot of gobbling going on out there. It was hard to hear the wild toms at first because there were so many crows out in the woods making a heck of a racket. Anyway, Mr. Gobbles is a gobbling fool which is exactly what I had hoped for!

I'll sure be glad when I can get back to doing chores myself. My DH is a sweetheart, and he gets them done, but you know how it is. No one does things quite the way you would if you were doing them yourself.

Sapphire-If you hold those eggs still while you candle them, can you see any movement in them? Can you see veins at all? I'm thinking you might have some eggs close to hatching there.

Did you do you a copy/paste of your text into the editor? That always messes up the text and it won't go back right again. I don't know why!

Ivy is right-- your eggs are fine and are close to being "done"! What you don't want to see are clear eggs that have nothing in them-- or have a nice orange glow to them. Those are the ones that are bad... at least they are if you are on Day10 and they look like they. Anything before that could be okay. I bet they already have a couple of weeks on them. Good luck on the coop! Pictures?!?!?!?
