I've put a wheel barrel load of leaves in the run, but I'm also bagging them to dump in the run thru the cold months to give the girls and dudes something to scratch in when the outside is covered in snow. It funny to watch how fast they can scatter a pile of leaves, litter, or just about anything. They're just plain entertaining. And in our family, well we're pretty easily entertained.

19 degrees in Admire. Brrrr. Just waiting for light to check on the chickens (unheated, undrafty, well ventilated coop). I'm thinking i should have gotten them incandescent lights rather than the flourscent one for longer light days. At least it would have radiated some heat early in the morning when it is so cold.

I know, that isn't a good idea (theoretically), but I'm really worried about them out there in the cold.

Yeah, they are fine. Just complaining about frozen water.

Does anyone use one of those dog kennel warmers (looks like a heating pad only solid plastic) under the waterer to keep it thawed?

Happy Thanksgiving! I think the coop is happy we eat Turkey today and not chicken:D

I am with you on the heated water bowl. It is on my Friday shopping list. Had to chuckle this morning as the girls enjoyed pecking at the ice that was dumped from their waterers. An Australorp grabbed an ice covered leaf and started the chase game...go figure. They help to remind to find fun in the simplest of things.
