Consolidated Kansas

Tweety and Josie, I love the pictures! Thanks for sharing those with us :)
Karen, what a memory for your children! I hope if anything like that ever happens here, I can be as effective a parent as you.
Hopefully I can find the money to get some misters soon. So far the birds seem to be doing okay with the extra waterers and ice bottles and occasional hosing down when I go out to check them, but I think they would like the misters better. I need to figure a way to get a little more shade going on back there, just for my piece of mind. It seems they have plenty throughout the day in different areas, but more couldn't hurt.
Thanks! Just to let you know sapphire, the cobra mister that I grabbed was $8.88 from home depot. Not very expensive at all - I also don't have to turn on the hose but more than a small trickle and it still works great! I think the pressure valves in the mister work great.

Basically, we each have to chip in what it costs in actual expenses but that's it. And, we share feedings so we don't all have to drive out there every day, which is a very nice arrangement. We just put a calendar on the wall and everyone "signs up" for their days to feed and the other days we don't have to go there at feed times at all.
That is a pretty nice set up you have then. Yeah, I was pretty upset with the cost of hay last year and this year isn't any better. Once the price goes up, you know it won't go down. Sheesh. I paid $50 a bale for brome/prairie this year. It's a mix, he said it only had a little bit of brome in it, as they had overseeded this year when their brome died out in the drought. I only bought 8 round bales of that. Then I'm going to have him haul in full brome here soon-- that is $85 a round. Shoot me now. Figured I'd do both and see how that goes.

I got an email from my CL ad for my Ameraucana chicks today & it sounds like the guy is going to take pretty much all the ones I have left except what the broody hen hasn't hatched yet, so that will be great.

I lost one of my brown leghorn chicks today, just disappeared into thin air this afternoon.
That's great you are selling your chicks. Seems like you arent having have troubles selling your chicks at all. That's good! I'm sorry about your leghorn. I wonder where he got to? Maybe a hawk? We have hawks around here all the time-- and snakes! Anyway, that is a real bummer. :(

I bought mine at Atwoods-- they were $9. Sounds like Home Depot is a bit cheaper! But not by much.

Sooo.. the ongoing saga with the person who wants my two silkie roosters. She writes, I write, then they don't get back for like 3-4 days. Since no one else has gotten ahold me, I'm just going with it. Otherwise, I would have gotten rid of them to someone else. They said they want to come out today and get them. I sent them my phone number to call me so I can give them directions. So we'll see IF they call. I didn't want to just type out my directions and then not hear from them again. Sigh.

My AC decided to die on one of the hottest days of the year. Good times! Now I wait and sweat.

In other news I think I will be able to move the girls into their new digs this evening. I will take some updated pics.

OMGosh! What a nightmare!

JosieChick, I forgot to tell you my funny little turkey does the same thing -- he parks himself right in front of the fan! That's exactly right -- who says they're not too bright?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!! I would DIE if my AC quit!! Yikes, and it's going to be soo hot today, too! I hope you all manage to stay cool and get it fixed asap! Poor you!! :(

But YAY on the moving of the birds! I'm sure they are going to love the extra room!

Pikeman that is a total bummer about the A/C - its always during a heat wave they go out and during a cold spell that furnaces go out. And then its hard to get someone out to look at them because they're inundated with everyone else in the same boat. Hopefully you can get it fixed quickly. Perhaps you can take the kids to a local pool and/or hang out at the local library for awhile.

Your coop is looking really good - I'm impressed with how fast you've got that done. My coop is pretty much finished but already I'm thinking about the next "build" project. I'm thinking about moving the ducks to a different area which will mean building them a duck house. It may actually be pretty similar to yours as I'm realizing they really need something they can just walk into. My chicken door is about 15" off the ground so I can do DLM this winter without covering the door opening. I have steps for them on both sides and they're managing - and even getting better at handling them - but they're just so much more clumsy than chickens or guineas. Those big waders of theirs get in their way and they fall while trying to navigate the steps. Then I realized that when they hatch out ducklings, as I'm hoping they eventually will, the ducklings won't be able to manage the door at all. So I'm going to have to build them a duckhouse and put them by the pond and then they'll be much happier.

Wah - I paid $9.99 for my Cobra Mister at the Atwoods in Andover. Sounds like it would have been cheaper if I had shopped around but on the other hand, I would have spent the difference in gas if I had gone somewhere else to get it. I just got it set up for them. I have the well spigot turned on just enough to push a little water through but not on full throttle, and I set it up where they already hang out at this time of day in the shade of a bush so hopefully it will make it more tolerable today. The Wichita forecast yesterday was for 105 but my thermometer here read 111 at one point. Today is forecast to be 107 so I suppose that means 113-114 here.

I met my barn friends for an early morning ride this morning. My horse was the least enthusiastic he's ever been - he usually is all about getting out there. I hosed him off when we got back though so he was turned out cooled down and hopefully will enjoy the rest of his day.

This might be a bit of a drive, but last year, my DH and I took our kids to Colorado Springs and we drove it in ONE day with plenty of time to run around once we got there. It didn't really take too long. Then once you're there, we went up Pikes Peak and there are SO MANY things to do in that town and area! There is that amazing state park right across the highway from Pikes Peak, with hiking and all the neat rock formations. Plus, just being close to the mountains-- it's fun. We just spent a weekend, and it was enough to see everything. It was a fast trip, but oh, so fun! That might be worth a 2-3 day jaunt?

If any of you are planning a trip to Colorado Springs or anywhere in Northern Colorado, you should be very careful. Wild fires are threatening Colorado Springs now, too. See here for more info. I have also heard of one wildfire in Northwest KS, so be careful if you're traveling!

Goodness yes! One of our fellow BYC'ers has already had to evacuate multiple times. She first loaded up all her animals (including 35 freedom rangers) and went to a friend's but then they got evacuated so she went to a relative but THEY got evacuated. I'm not sure where she is now and I'm sure she's too busy to post an update. She is from the Waldo Canyon area where the fire is only 5% contained and already 32,000 homes have been evacuated. The first just recently jumped a barrier they were trying to create to contain it (I was just reading about it on Yahoo! News a few minutes ago).

oh wow, you got a ride in this morning! I swear, my mornings go by so fast with all the kids screaming about things. It's nearly 10am before I get everyone settled down. I'm ready for them to GET OVER it already and not have to throw tantrums because the breakfast isn't happening fast enough or it's not what they want. ARGH. I don't see morning rides in my future... for the next few years. Sigh. Unless my DH is home to take over.

Yeah, our uncle is the one we stay with there in Colorado Springs next to Pikes Peak-- he's like 10 minutes away from Pikes Peak. He has a really beautiful home on the side of the mountain, and until this morning-- his home wasn't threatened. About an hour ago, he called his brother (my DH's dad) and said that they are now being evacuated. The fire is 3 miles from their home, but it's burning and moving much faster than it was. I hope their home is spared, but it doesn't sound good. They were packing up storage containers with all of their important papers and going to see how many other things they could fit in their cars. Since they are on the side of the mountain, he was posting photos of the fire on his Facebook this morning. It looked WAY closer than 3 miles away. Plus, it was so over cast and smokey-- you could barely see anything. They are supposed to get rain this evening-- I hope it arrives sooner than expected and really douses it all out. Anyway, that's mainly why we can make quick jaunts up there, because we stay with them, and we don't have to worry about hotels.
