Consolidated Kansas

Any thoughts on this? Seems like a pretty cool concept - the price isn't bad either.

I'm wondering if I'd need one for each direction around the coop or just one that points out to the main part of the field..

My grandmother has one of those and said that it doesn't work at all. She's had more coon attacks than anyone I know - of course she lives next to a huge forest and it doesn't help that she feeds them. (Says it's to keep them away from the chickens

). She mentioned to me that they just get used to the lights being there and don't pay attention to it anymore. You can certainly try, but I wouldn't spend too much money on it.

So very very adorable!!! I absolutely love the colors!

Wow, I just saw this on CL, I love it! I would love to have a living wall like this, how great would that be!

This is freaking awesome! I'd love to do something like that as well!! hmmmm.. i really don't need anymore redecorating ideas. This summer has practically drained my savings account with all the yard updates (and coop stuff) I've done since we moved in last October. LOL

Eggsitement here this morning! I now have two chickens laying eggs! I got my second "first" egg! There were two in the nest box!! Apparently whomever is doing it was a good girl and showed the others where to lay! This is very exciting because I was really hoping they wouldn't pick an awkward spot to start laying and I'd have to train them where to go.

medawinks, how funny that you had a social worker visit when you had your hen in the house, I wonder what she thought? Yeah, I don't know if the honey was what perked the chick up or what, but he is doing lots better, sitting up now in the crate & starting to peep & make noises. I'm going to have to bring in a larger crate, he's in a really small one, but when he was just lying down it didn't matter. I don't want to put him back outside until I'm sure he is totally recovered. I agree with Danz that they probably are a lot more prone to the heat after going through that experience. I know he's not very happy in here & will be less so when he gets on his feet better, but at least he's alive. Yes, I had bought Cream Legbar eggs from this guy on BYC, they're rare & just were imported from England only last year, so even the eggs are expensive. I had gotten 8 eggs from him & all of those were messed up from shipping, so the guy sent me 4 more free & paid the shipping himself & then those went all the way to Dodge City by mistake in the heat, so I figured it was a total loss. I wrote a letter to the postal service complaining & actually did get an apology from the postmaster in Winfield along with him saying that he would instruct his carriers on the treatment of fragile & perishable packages. That was way more of a response than I figured I would get, so I was pleased. I think more people need to complain to them so they realize these are living things that need special care. I just think like my DH said that they figured oh these are $2 eggs, no big deal, but I told them I paid $70 for these eggs & how disgusting it was for both myself & the seller to go through this experience. I think that probably was an eye opener for them about shipped eggs. Here is a pic I just took of my new baby:

Danz, I don't blame you for being worried about leaving today. I decided yesterday not to go to Wichita for feed & instead just went to Arkansas City so I wouldn't be gone so long. Today is a scorcher out there & I need to get out there now & check on my birds. My DH left for work 2 hours early today, so I can go ahead & turn on the mister.

What a cutie!

That's beautiful. Unfortunately, all I can think about right now is how often it would have to be watered ...

I still get excited when I get the first egg from a pullet. I hope we never stop being excited by it!

My rooster died shortly after my post today. Pretty sad for me.
I haven't been home long. I got my granddaugher off to go back home. I handed her my parking stub and didn't think about it. I guess she thought she was supposed to have it. So instead of $3 it cost me $29 to get out of the parking garage. What great luck I have!!!!
I enjoyed the visit but am so anxious to have peace and quiet again. It will take me months to get all the dirty dishes and laundry gathered up. It's hard to believe how many glasses and towels one child can use in a day!!!!

I'm so sorry for you loss. You did all you could for him.

Bummer about the parking stub. I am always completely paranoid about losing those things.

So sad. Henrietta, one of my EE's, died today. Fine one minute, gone the next. I feel so helpless to keep this from happening. We give them frozen chunks of squash and cucumbers in the afternoon, put ice in their waterers twice in the afternoon, have misters going, make water puddles for them to stand in because more of them will do that as opposed to getting into the wading pools. I'm so frustrated, when we're working so hard to keep them healthy. I am glad I put one of her eggs in the incubator recently. I have one Swedish Flower that's supposed to hatch today and stuck a few of my birds' eggs in so if it happened, there would be other chicks to keep it company.

Danz, that sounds like something that would happen to me! How frustrating!

I hear you about the need for some peace and quiet! I'm not feeling well today and the noise around here has been really annoying. I think I got a bit dehydrated, blood pressure went up and blah! Doing okay now, just ready to hit the hay.

Well, I'm really frustrated. We were gone all day today and it was not a fun day. We had to go to the old house and pack up the last of it and load it all in a large trailer we rented for the occasion. We started early to try to beat the heat but had to work through until it was done and it was 3pm before we were able to drive off. All that work in the heat, loading and carrying took its toll and I arrived home simply exhausted. We allowed ourselves the next few hours to chill but as soon as the sun went down, had to go back out and unload the trailer.

In the time in between, I had a chance to catch up on posts and I had "multi-ed" quite a few to reply to, but by the time I came back in tonight, it had lost all my multies.

And, while I was out this evening unloading, Danz posted an update about the loss of the roo - I'm so sorry. And also sorry to Karen for the loss of Henrietta. What an awful, brutal summer this has been. I don't know what the temperature was today but I do know it felt blazing hot out there. Hawkeye, so sorry the horses are suffering so much in the heat too. I don't even know what to suggest other than what you are already doing, to try to keep them cooler. Maybe move to Alaska????

Danz, sorry also about the parking ticket - I can't believe they would charge you so much. I guess they get used to people trying to get out of paying their fee if they've been there a few hours so just have that standard fee if you don't have a ticket but wow that is frustrating.

By the way, thank you to all for the advice and affirmations regarding how to handle Tory. I think I will wait to walk her in the chicken yard until I have a correction collar. I want to really make an impression on her. I'll try to pick one up in the next few days.

Danz and Karens - Sorry to hear about your losses. That just sucks! This heat can officially suck it! I think I have been lucky so far with my girls and this heat. I go out several times during the day to check on them. When I do I put ice cubes in their water, etc. Also, when I water my hops with the soaker hose they go and stand/play in the mud puddles it creates. I think that is their saving grace at the moment.

The good news I could have sworn I heard was that this current heat wave will break late next week/weekend. I think tomorrow is supposed to be the hottest. Olathe is looking at 105F-108F actual temperature. So on that note, I need to get back out into the garage and break down the box spring that is 80 years old that we are getting rid of. Then, I need to carry two fermenters of hoppy wheat ale to the garage fridge to chill before I keg the beer tomorrow evening or Monday evening.

Have a good night all!

Danz, I'm so sorry about your rooster. What a bummer about the parking stub, those airports can really stick it to you for parking. We always have to pay to park our car when we fly somewhere & it costs quite a bit to leave it there.

tweety, I will try to get some pics of the older Cream Legbars so you can see how they're feathering out. You can definitely tell the pullets from the cockerels by their markings, that's one of the nice things about his breed, you can sex them at hatch.

michelle, those wall planters are made of cement & the company makes them to order with different patterns. I have no idea how much they cost, but I just love the idea. Of course right now wouldn't be a good idea to have something like that because of this horrible summer, but maybe in a different year when we're not burning alive here.

KarenS, I'm so sorry you lost another bird! I know you have been doing every you can just like we all are. I'm just almost afraid to leave the house any more for fear of what I will find when I come back.

I had to go to Ark City today to pick up a little kitten to replace my calico cat that someone shot. I just loved that cat so much & I wanted another one. You can't replace that one exactly, but I found a calico kitten on the Cowley pet swap & arranged to go see it. I got there & saw the place they were living & rescued that one & it's sister. Anyway, the kitten is adorable & so is her sister. I brought them home & am keeping them in a crate overnight just so they can kind of get their bearings. I did take them out at feeding time for the other cats & nobody seemed all that upset about new ones. I noticed my GP Lily sitting by the crate when I came into the house, so she is either guarding them or just keeping them company. She tends to do that with new animals or birds that come the first night, I've seen her do it before. I introduced both dogs to the kittens & told them they belong there, so they won't chase them hopefully. They actually do like the cats now that they're older, they go up & lick them & lay by them.

After I got the kittens situated I had to go buy groceries & then went & picked up some hardware cloth that had also been on the pet swap. I got two pretty good sized rolls of it for $5 along with 5 or 6 t-posts. It was used, but I couldn't pass up a deal like that. I can use it for the windows on the new coop. As soon as I got back from that I had to feed & water all the birds & animals & put away groceries, so I just finally got to sit down for a few minutes to eat & rest.

My little Swedish Flower Hen chick is eating & drinking, but still can't stand. It's a lot more alert & has control of the rest of it's body better, but not it's legs yet, still pretty shaky. I got it moved into a bigger crate tonight after moving the kittens into a different one, musical crates around here tonight. I did get all of the ingredients for the homemade electrolyte solution, so now I have that if I need it. I'm like you Danz, I need a cabinet just to keep chicken supplies in, especially the chicken pharmacy. I would like to find a used storage cabinet for the garage, but it will have to come later on, I just have way too much going on right now.
