Well that explains why
TSC didn't have two different starter feeds out yesterday. Last time I was at Orschelyn's they didn't seem to be out of their chick starter, but who knows, maybe they hadn't pulled them yet. From what that recall thing said the lack of vitamin D in the feed would be something that would have to be fed over a long period of time to really cause a problem. I seem to use up quite a bit of the chick starter at this point with all of the young chicks I have right now. I have a whole pen full of them & then the little Swedish Flower Hen chicks & one Cream Legbar in the crate still. Those 7 turkeys seem to go through quite a bit of game bird starter too. I don't know when I should switch them to regular game bird feed or is that too high in protein for them, does anybody know? I've been feeding the starter wth 22% protein in it to them & the peafowl chicks & they have done very well on that. I do like the Dumor brand feeds from
TSC, it's just a better deal for 50 pound bags than Orschelyn's 40 pound ones, but I don't always get the opportunity to drive up there, so I end up sometimes getting Orschelyn's feed inbetween. Hawkeye, I guess it would depend on which feed you were buying, but it just seemed like the prices were a bit higher on Atwoods feeds. I would have to write down prices the next time I'm up that way & then do the same at Orschelyn's &
TSC to really do a true comparison. I think you can price Orschelyn's &
TSC online, but Atwoods doesn't have prices on their web site.
Danz, that's funny that those guys took off work to come look at your birds! That's exciting about your peahen sitting, I thought it was getting a little late for them to lay though, but maybe she is just getting comfortable enough there. There were some mini horses on the KS Farm animal swap, but I'm not sure if they have sold them all or not or where they were.
Josie, I hope you're feeling better, be careful, gosh you go like a whirlwind, I wish I could bottle your energy & use some myself. This heat just about does me in. Yesterday actually wasn't too bad & was a good day to go visit HEChicken's place & run all of my errands in Wichita, but today seems like a whole different story. It was really heating up out there at 11:00 already.
Well keep your fingers crossed, so far my little Swedish Flower Hen chick that had gotten heat exhaustion seems to be doing fine out there in the pen, I hope that continues. When I got home yesterday after being gone for quite a few hours I was worried about what I might find, but everyone seemed fine. But then it was a bit cooler day too & cloudy for part of it. Those panels on the pens are really helping a bunch for those pens that aren't down under the trees. Sunflowerparrot, you really saved my birds with those panels. I worried daily about my Ameraucanas because that black rooster just suffered terribly every day. Now they can walk around in the pen in the afternoon & have much more area that is shaded. My little peacock chicks seem much happier too with their added shade.
Well it's back up to 104 & 106 the next few days, everyone try to stay cool & safe.
