Danz, I just read another thread here on BYC about a recall due to lack of added Vitamin D. They are recalling Purina * Dumor brands, the list and lot numbers are listed in the news release from Purina that is linked to in the post.

this is what i found while searching. http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm313507.htm
I use dumor brand but its not one on the recall list. Guess i need to change brands i started free ranging today they've come out of the run a little but then go back in. We have small dogs so im not sure how thats going to go with the chickens out roaming

Very tired not sleeping good my little ones 19mon old and 3 yr old have been sleeping with me while DH was away and i now have them sleeping in their rooms they come wake me up all night to sleep with them or them with us.

Karen- Glad you are feeling better, I am pretty well on the mend but felt like crud for a few days. It surprised me because I have been so careful but it sneaks up on you!

Okay back to horse issues. I really wanted to buy a little mare last spring. Trish knows the one, as she was there. Her feet were grown out some and needed trimmed. How would I know if I were looking at a horse if it were foundered before I bought it? I was reading and it was mentioning ex-ray but obviously you won't have an ex-ray at an auction. I really wanted that mare. She was exactly what I wanted. At least that will keep me from jumping in and buying something else since I found the perfect horse and passed up getting her. At least all the horses there are coggins tested and most are registered. Here I am worried about buying bird feed and I want to take on another animal to feed! I'm nuts. But I have hay available so that helps.
If a horse was foundering you would know. They typically adopt a stance when they are in pain in their front end. I will post a pic at the end of a foundering pony so you can see what they look like. They are often reluctant to walk due to the pain in their front feet. Overgrown feet should just look long but feet of a horse in trouble will look like their are large waves in the hoof wall. If you can pick up the feet it should look fairly smooth on the sole of the hoof, if their is coffin bone rotation their may be a large bulge at the front of the hoof in front of the point of the frog. In a normal hoof their is a small bump here called the hoof callus but in a foundering horse it looks as if the coffin bone is pushing the sole outward. This is why I always buy horses from a private party where I can have a vet check and lameness check. At auction you never know what is going on with a horse and it could even be medicated with something like bute to reduce pain and inflammation the day of sale. I don't know if they do any blood testing to be sure the horses are not drugged at smaller sale barns but they do back on the east coast at the big thoroughbred sales because people would bute up lame race horses and sale them as sound animals.

Josie what did you worm your Sebbies with? Just curious what you recommend. I need to worm my Sebbies and my peafowl. The chickens are in good shape. Also at what age should I start worming my turkeys. I can't remember when I started worming the others but I sure don't want to do it too early on these expensive ones. I wormed them with oral and topical ivermection/praziquantel. I used .75 ml ivermectin cattl pour on (5mg/ml) I got a 250 ml bottle at TSC for $15. This is what chooks uses on her birds I believe and she told me about it. It is 3-4 drops for a bantam, 5 drops for hatchery fowl, 6 drops for extra large birds (big roos, brahmas) I looked up on the geese forum and they use a whole ml but I did the math and that seemed like a lot so I used 0.75 ml on the back of their necks. I also gave them oral ivermectin/praziquantel horse paste dewormer (equimax is the name brand). Per DH I mix 1 ml of dewormer with 5 ml of olive oil (it is not water soluble) and give 0.4 ml by mouth to each goose. I banded them all too. I had to remove the big white ganders npip zip tie because he had pulled on it and tightened it down so it was cutting into his leg. I will put another zip tie on his actual leg band next time instead of on the actual birds leg. I forget how they put everything in their mouths so if you do your geese keep that in mind if you need to mark them that zip ties may not be a good option!

Mentioning feed being a problem; I think that is why there is a shortage of chick starter now. I have read at least three companies had their starter recalled. Cargill produces Nutrena, Purina and several other brands and had a recall. I am thinking whomever produces orshlen's must have had a recall as well. There is always a chance that some of it doesn't get pulled. All the stuff I have read was due to some bad labeling that could potentially kill chicks. I'm not sure what a label has to do with killing chicks unless they got the wrong ingredients in the mix. AWESOME!!! Now I am going to run out there and look at my bags because I really don't understand the mysterious deaths I have had. No signs of distress, some with pasty butt much later on than I would expect and then they peep really loud and drop dead. That might explain the loss of my brahma chicks earlier this month.

I just got some Purina so I certainly hope it is safe. I had given the babies some all-stock and it made their poo stink and gave my turkeys the runs. I want to keep the turkeys and peachick on medicated feed because they are so much more susceptible to getting sick.
Speaking of peafowl I may have a miracle going on. My peahen has been sitting in her nest for 2 days now. There were no eggs in there but maybe she has finally decided to lay and sit. Wouldn't that be wonderful is she could hatch some babies for me this late? I started putting a bottle of ice in their big water pan they just stand in and started giving them cucumber pieces so they had more green in their diet. Maybe that worked. I keep checking her to make sure she is alright and she appears perfectly healthy.
She is a crazy bird, sitting in this heat! Do you have eggs for her to set?

Hawkeye- Ponies are a lot of fun! We grew up on ponies and I can't believe they didn't kill us! Naughty little things would take us on all sorts of harried rides! When we have kids I think the minis will be fun for them. They are kind of wild right now but hopefully I can get them tamed up!

Well that explains why TSC didn't have two different starter feeds out yesterday. Last time I was at Orschelyn's they didn't seem to be out of their chick starter, but who knows, maybe they hadn't pulled them yet. From what that recall thing said the lack of vitamin D in the feed would be something that would have to be fed over a long period of time to really cause a problem. I seem to use up quite a bit of the chick starter at this point with all of the young chicks I have right now. I have a whole pen full of them & then the little Swedish Flower Hen chicks & one Cream Legbar in the crate still. Those 7 turkeys seem to go through quite a bit of game bird starter too. I don't know when I should switch them to regular game bird feed or is that too high in protein for them, does anybody know? I've been feeding the starter wth 22% protein in it to them & the peafowl chicks & they have done very well on that. I do like the Dumor brand feeds from TSC, it's just a better deal for 50 pound bags than Orschelyn's 40 pound ones, but I don't always get the opportunity to drive up there, so I end up sometimes getting Orschelyn's feed inbetween. Hawkeye, I guess it would depend on which feed you were buying, but it just seemed like the prices were a bit higher on Atwoods feeds. I would have to write down prices the next time I'm up that way & then do the same at Orschelyn's & TSC to really do a true comparison. I think you can price Orschelyn's & TSC online, but Atwoods doesn't have prices on their web site.

Danz, that's funny that those guys took off work to come look at your birds! That's exciting about your peahen sitting, I thought it was getting a little late for them to lay though, but maybe she is just getting comfortable enough there. There were some mini horses on the KS Farm animal swap, but I'm not sure if they have sold them all or not or where they were.

Josie, I hope you're feeling better, be careful, gosh you go like a whirlwind, I wish I could bottle your energy & use some myself. This heat just about does me in. Yesterday actually wasn't too bad & was a good day to go visit HEChicken's place & run all of my errands in Wichita, but today seems like a whole different story. It was really heating up out there at 11:00 already.

Well keep your fingers crossed, so far my little Swedish Flower Hen chick that had gotten heat exhaustion seems to be doing fine out there in the pen, I hope that continues. When I got home yesterday after being gone for quite a few hours I was worried about what I might find, but everyone seemed fine. But then it was a bit cooler day too & cloudy for part of it. Those panels on the pens are really helping a bunch for those pens that aren't down under the trees. Sunflowerparrot, you really saved my birds with those panels. I worried daily about my Ameraucanas because that black rooster just suffered terribly every day. Now they can walk around in the pen in the afternoon & have much more area that is shaded. My little peacock chicks seem much happier too with their added shade.

Well it's back up to 104 & 106 the next few days, everyone try to stay cool & safe.

Well here is an important lesson for everyone. When there is a feed recall it helps to have all your feed labels. I am going to start taping the labels with the lot numbers on the container when I empty bags into the barrels because I can't even find all my labels but one of my bags of chick stater has been recalled due to high levels of aflatoxin which is a fungus that can grow in grain and cause serious health issues and apparently death in chicks. That explains the sudden tragic losses I have had. Fantastic.

Josie, thanks for the lesson on horse care. I've always been fascinated with horses, but didn't know that much about their actual medical care. I knew that foundering was caused by food but always thought it was in their stomach, never would have dreamed it had something to do with their hoofs. That is amazing. Are horses the only ones that founder, the other hoofed animals, goats, donkeys cows, etc don't?
Founder isn't just caused by food, but that is a common cause. Founder is also caused by infection or illness. Years ago, we had a mare that foaled and then got a VERY serious uterine infection afterwards. We had her cleaned out, but alas, things just happen anyway. She got such a high fever for so long and was so ill (despite penicillin injections), she ended up foundering. Her laminitis was pretty severe, and her coffin bone did rotate and start to push thru the sole of her hoof. We wound up in rubber wedges and rubber boots for nearly two years correcting her condition. Feet issues can and will cost you an arm and a leg. My farrier has a moto--- "No feet, no horse" and it's true. You either spend a fortune fixing them (which is always what we end up doing) or you put them down. Now, we've had a lot of horses over the years, and I'd say out of every 7 horses we would get, we'd end up with a foot problem-- not necessarily at the time of purchase, but like I said.... things just happen! LOL Honestly, x-rays are CHEAP compared to buying a horse with problems. We now have any horse we are looking at inspected by our farrier and the last time, we had a vet check them too. You can spend $60 on an x-ray or you can spend thousands later on for being duped. Now... what happens after you bring home healthy feet... you can't often predict.

Hawkeye the apple tree the Sebbies can get under has some kind of disease that makes the apples shrivel up like shrunken heads and fall off the tree. It's probably a 40 year old tree and the only reason it is still here is because it isn't a dwarf and it gives some shade. I've been a little nervous about planting other fruit trees because of it. I should have the extension service see if they can figure out what is wrong with it. There is a second tree there that the main tree fell over and a new tree sprouted from the trunk. It had the same disease but appears fairly healthy this year. Also a huge old pear tree had the same disease. And it looks fairly healthy this year. I think maybe the fungus or what ever it is may be spread by insects. Since we have no grass we have very few if any bugs this year. So maybe that is why the other trees look healthier.
The deer used to come in and eat the shrunken apples but of course the dogs don't let them near. They birds aren't interested in them at all.
My duck buyer is coming tomorrow to take the rest of my ducklings! Yahoo! I was supposed to take 5 roosters and 2 pekin drakes to town today but I again couldn't catch those wild roosters. I hate disappointing people and I hate missing money but until I figure out how to nab them I'm out of luck.
I was going to go to town yesterday and look at the poultry at the fair cause they were supposed to judge them. I never left home.
This Chinese guy showed up with another engineer from Wolf Creek in the middle of the day yesterday. He loves my place. I can see him buying a mini farm for his family. He keeps saying "I love this." He is an avid gardener and loves the birds. He has asked me a million questions about them. Even though it is very hard to understand him. I do hope he doesn't become a pest. I think it was comical that he and his friend left work for an hour in the middle of the day just to come out so he could show him my birds.
I bet you could spray your trees with something and get them sorted out in a season or two. But I wouldn't know where to start. You would want to bring in the leaves and the fruit to be examined.

Oh that is a rough age with them being so little. I only coslept for the first 6-8 months when they were wanting to nurse thru the night. After that, I needed my space! LOL Hope they get adjusted well, and maybe getting them a really neat night light or something will help. My kids keep seeing those ads for the glow in the dark Pillow Pets and if they all didn't already have a pillow pet, we'd probably do that. They also have the light shows that project on the ceiling... with kid scenes, and stars, etc... maybe find something fun to keep them in bed and comforted.

Danz- Classic laminitic posture in a pony. Very painful.

Laminitis.jpg
Another dead give away on this pony above--- look at his stomach muscles all clenched up. He looks like he's barely making it. Even the roach back might be part of that stance. I usually check colic this way-- if their belly muscles are clenched like that, you know they are in serious pain. His front feet are rounded out--- poor thing. Oh, another thing, if you lift the foot, you can sometimes see where the foot is pulling away from the hoof wall, there will be a white line and if there is any separation or that white line is really thick..... bad, bad, bad.

Thanks! My girl has been walking around!! She got to the water by herself yesterday. Whew. I've been tying her up to the post next to the water to MAKE her drink. Take better care of yourself, though! Heat exhaustion is very serious, as I'm sure you discovered. I've had it years ago and not since. Between throwing up, being delirious, and then so sick for a good couple of days.... NO FUN.

That's good news.

I have overheated myself a couple of times this year, as I know several people here have. We all need to stop it and take better care of ourselves! I don't know why it seems so much worse this year, but I guess we all need to be extra careful.

I can't believe all the recalls on stuff all the time. Did we always take such a risk buying things and just not know about it???

I have done nothing today so far except take a bath. The lawn mowing has slowed way down -- nothing is growing -- so we're getting more time off, but I can't seem to get motivated to do anything with it.

Thanks for all the info on the horses. The only horses I would consider buying probably would be those that came from Kramer's petting zoo or one of the other similar ones that come to the bi-yearly auction. I have watched their animals for years and they are all very healthy, gentle, and cared for. This mare I was interested in came from them and I could see she needed her feet trimmed a little but otherwise she was in awesome condition and about 2 months from foaling. I am an idiot for not getting her. She was only 29 inches tall and she was about 5 years old.
Maybe I should stick to chickens or mini cattle. I just thought it would be awesome to have a mini horse for my youngest two grand daughters to ride when they came here. I really don't need anything else to take care of, but just the same.......
I have been having Lady Amhurst pheasant eggs disappear. I would think, I will pick those up this evening and then they'd be gone. Well one of those so called "good snakes" that are supposed to eat mice (and obviously aren't due to the tons of mice bait I put out!) left about a 6 foot skin in the pheasant house. Really ticks me off. I can't wait to catch that thing in there. In those famous words from Alice in Wonderland, "Off with his head!"
Josie I have Ivermectin pour on that I use on the chickens. I also have ivermectin injectable but none of the horse paste. You are right about the leg bands. Those silly geese. That is why I had to get the electric fence netting. They figured out they could chew holes in the safety fence and walk out.
