Trish, what I know about genetics would go in a thimble with plenty of room left over. But it seems to me if the attributes end up different on an American Legbar then the APA standards should eventually reflect that. I know when I got my BCM eggs, there is a standard for French BCM or non-French (American? English?) Anyway, the French standard calls for feathered legs while the non-French standard allows for clean legs. I think there are other breeds too, where the standard differs from European to American. So my feeling is, if it is a Legbar, it is fine to call it and sell it as a Legbar. And if the birds turn out substantially different from the British stock, well the APA will reflect that eventually. Either way, it must be exciting to be in on the ground with a new breed like this. Note to self: google Legbars to see what they actually look like.

Maybe my post was lost in the shuffle, but could someone please answer? I had seen that some of you use pour on and horse paste to worm your birds. Could you tell me what brand/medicine and how much of what to use? Thanks :)

Nothing exciting going on around here, too hot. I started getting eggs from one of my Bantam Cochins and my lil' bitty bantie OEG. Can't wait for those EE's to start laying!

Stay cool, everyone. Keep thinking RAIN!

I've heard a lot about chicken saddles and am thinking about making them and selling them - do you think there would be a market for this? Now that I'm a slacker retired person, I will have more time on my hands - especially since it is too hot to really do much outdoors during the day. Would love thoughts on this idea. I used to make my kids' clothes when they were younger and did a lot of quilting too!

Anyways - I am getting 3 more guineas today - that will give me a total of 7. My current 5 chickens are now allowed to be out of their fenced area to roam the property (27 acres), but stick very close to the coop and fence. They are so fun to watch when the run to chase a flying bug! I am opening the outer door of their coop that doesn't have fencing about an hour before I will coop them up all night. They're doing great at going back in when I "herd" them - what is really funny is the 3 cats also help herd! Seriously - they walk very slowly behind them to herd them toward the coop door. Who would have thought these kittens would work for their room and board :)

Well - I hope everyone stays cool today and that your chickens and other animals make it through another day.

we got rain

it's about 75 this morning i hope it stays cool today i got my electric bill and just about died. I'm not crazy about eating rabbit but if its heal tier for us i will give it a go.

michelleml - We got rain in Olathe too! I walked outside to let the girls out and shivered! Not really but it was noticeabley cooler outside. The girls seem to appreciate it.

Oh you lucky people. Looks from radar that the rain all was north.... nothing for us down here darn it. It doesn't feel cool either.
Saphhire for pour on ivermectin you used between 2 and 5 drops on the back of the neck. Two for little ones and 5 for large fowl. It doesn't matter what brand you use.
Josie was using the paste and I have no idea how to use that.
Hawkeye, I was watching the news last night and I swear I saw you and your little (girl) on TV in line at the mall. I just don't think it could have been any one else. If so, I was there in spirit with you. The Topeka mall wouldn't let the news cameras in there yesterday so they showed Wichita footage. I'm surprised they didn't mention that at our church Sunday. Maybe they figured we were too far out to go.
Yeah my turkey deal fell through. The gal was supposed to make a couple phone calls and call me back but she hasn't. I tried calling the guy that had chicks and he didn't answer or call back.
My Dad's birthday is today and my brother is coming up from Waco,Texas late this evening for the weekend. My birthday is Tuesday. Not that he would come see me for my birthday but it's nice that he will be here. I've got to get a lot done today for a dinner we are having this evening. I also have to take some birds and eggs to town today too. I'd like to make it one trip but I don't see how.
I lost another little lemon cuckoo this morning. Crap! I don't know why. There was no wheezing or sneezing. I'm giving probiotics and vitamins in their water. Those chicks are old enough now they should be stable. I'm about done buying expensive eggs to hatch.
Trish the standards for US chickens and chickens in other countries is different in many breeds. I wouldn't worry about it unless you have several more major importers bringing in cream legbars in the next few years. If you aren't planning to breed them to show some day and just want them for the auto sexing and popularity why would you worry. The standards could be many years down the road and may be entirely different than what they have elsewhere.

I would say go for it if you want to try making some saddles, start out with a few different ones & then take orders. You can sell them either on BYC or eBay are two avenues to try. I need to get some new ones evidently, I told you that I had put one on the hen with the torn back last night & she already had it off this morning. That's funny that your kittens help "herd" the chickens back in at night! It was nice to see you this morning by the way & thanks again for getting the guinea keets for me. I got them all settled in after you left with food & water, but they're huddling in the corner of the pen right now. They will get used to it soon I'm sure & start exploring their surroundings. The ones I had before were quite a bit older when I got them, these are just tiny babies. I do think most of them are going to be pied because of their markings, it should be interesting to see what they look like when they're feathered out. I had pearls & lavenders before, but no pieds.

I hope you find some turkey poults soon, I'll keep my eyes open for you & let you know if I see any. That's too bad about your Lemon Cuckoo chicks, I wonder if it was just too much trauma from shipping or what? You would think if they were past that crucial stage that they would be OK. Yes, I agree, the standards probably aren't going to be the same here in the US for the Legbars most likely because our birds seem to be different & it seems like we tend to do our own thing when it comes to the APA SOP for breeds here, which is OK by me. We have to work with what we have & just because our birds don't match the UK SOP doesn't mean they're substandard birds, they're just different. I don't plan to show my birds, just breed so other people can enjoy them & it will be interesting to see what develops in the next year or two with the breed. We're all pretty much in the same boat here with Greenfire Farms blood lines, so we'll just see where it goes from here.

I'm not looking forward to this day, it's supposed to he hot, hot, & hot. The next three days are supposed to be absolutely miserable, I hope we all can keep our birds & animals going & not break down ourselves. Everyone keep praying for rain & cooler weather. Those of you that got rain this morning I'm glad for you, I sure wish we could get some, it's just terrible what this drought has done to everything. I just gave up on trying to water most things, it doesn't do much good. Last night my grow-out pen was so soggy that I had to put straw in there to soak some of it up from the mister going all afternoon & the same in the turkey pen. I hate to have the birds sitting in a wet pen like that, but I don't know how else to keep them cooled down. I think today I'm going to do the ice things & try to not wet it quite so much.

Well everyone try to stay cool, be safe & don't work too hard!

Sorry we missed you somehow! I can tell you what I use personally for my own birds but everyone has different advice and different methods.

Wazine- In water as instructed on bottle for roundworms (labeled for use in birds) 2 week withdraw on eggs/slaughtered birds, (I throw away eggs/don't butcher a bird for two weeks after dosing, don't feed the eggs back to the birds or you will just be reintroducing small amounts of the dewormer again)

Ivermectin pour on for cattle made by durvet 5mg/ml ivermectin (there is another kind that has a shorter withdraw time but I can't remember the name right now) Yellow and red box at TSC, 250 ml bottle is about $15 and will last forever, be sure you get it down on the skin. This in theory does get absorbed systemically but I don't rely on it to deworm internally because it has not been studied in poultry.
bantam-3-4 drops on the nape of the neck
hatchery fowl-5 drops
extra large birds-6 drops
geese/full grown turkeys-0.5 ml

Equimax equine dewormer, ivermectin 1.87% praziquantel 14.03%-will cover tape and round worm, not water soluble must be mixed with an oil really well
I mix 1 ml dewormer with 5 ml olive oil, give 0.1 ml of this per kg by mouth, 1 pound=2.2 kg, so a 3 pound bird is 6.6 kg so I would give about 0.7 ml (round up from 0.66)

I withdraw eggs/meat for two weeks on all dewormers, most of these drugs are not labeled for poultry and there have been no studies on the residual drugs in the system of the bird so to play it safe I pull eggs for two weeks. I would never sell customers eggs from a bird I just dewormed. Hatching eggs should be unaffected.

I usually dose wazine in the water, wait three days and do the oral/topical ivermectins at the same time, redose wazine in two weeks from first date of administration. Pull eggs for two weeks after last wazine dosing. Sometimes I am lazy and don't redose the wazine but the horse paste wormer should be enough. I like to do it when birds are molting and then I don't have to worry about eggs but have done it when they are laying and just pitch the eggs. You could in theory feed them to your dogs but I never get that organized! I try not to do it in the intense heat but I would rather deworm them than have birds with a heavy parasite load. I am paranoid because I had a friend who lost a rooster and sent him to KState for necropsy and he had a lower bowel obstruction from tapeworms. Yuck!

Bummer about your turkeys and lemon cuckoo. I don't know what is going on with chicks right now. Solar flares or something?!? I lost 3 silkie chicks, fine one minute dead the next. No sign of illness just kicked right over and they were almost two weeks old? I am so scared it is the feed that is a problem and I have switched to purina starter but it may have been to late for some of them, I don't know what else is causing it...

Well one of my cochin hens has an impacted crop. Don't know how she managed that but I guess I will start with oil and go from there. This is my first impacted crop, I have had a lot of chicken health problems but this is a first for me. I hope she is ok, she is one of my nice mille fleur cochin hens and I would hate to lose her. It feels all hard and full of seed and didn't empty at all overnight. I brought her in because she was laying under the coop panting really hard and didn't try to get away or struggle at all when I picked her up. I have so many birds in the house right now!

Thank you, too! There have been a lot of posts, so I probably just got lost in the shuffle, thank you for telling me how/what you do
