Maybe my post was lost in the shuffle, but could someone please answer? I had seen that some of you use pour on and horse paste to worm your birds. Could you tell me what brand/medicine and how much of what to use? Thanks
Nothing exciting going on around here, too hot. I started getting eggs from one of my Bantam Cochins and my lil' bitty bantie OEG. Can't wait for those EE's to start laying!
Stay cool, everyone. Keep thinking RAIN!
Sorry we missed you somehow! I can tell you what I use personally for my own birds but everyone has different advice and different methods.
Wazine- In water as instructed on bottle for roundworms (labeled for use in birds) 2 week withdraw on eggs/slaughtered birds, (I throw away eggs/don't butcher a bird for two weeks after dosing, don't feed the eggs back to the birds or you will just be reintroducing small amounts of the dewormer again)
Ivermectin pour on for cattle made by durvet 5mg/ml ivermectin (there is another kind that has a shorter withdraw time but I can't remember the name right now) Yellow and red box at
TSC, 250 ml bottle is about $15 and will last forever, be sure you get it down on the skin. This in theory does get absorbed systemically but I don't rely on it to deworm internally because it has not been studied in poultry.
bantam-3-4 drops on the nape of the neck
hatchery fowl-5 drops
extra large birds-6 drops
geese/full grown turkeys-0.5 ml
Equimax equine dewormer, ivermectin 1.87% praziquantel 14.03%-will cover tape and round worm, not water soluble must be mixed with an oil really well
I mix 1 ml dewormer with 5 ml olive oil, give 0.1 ml of this per kg by mouth, 1 pound=2.2 kg, so a 3 pound bird is 6.6 kg so I would give about 0.7 ml (round up from 0.66)
I withdraw eggs/meat for two weeks on all dewormers, most of these drugs are not labeled for poultry and there have been no studies on the residual drugs in the system of the bird so to play it safe I pull eggs for two weeks. I would never sell customers eggs from a bird I just dewormed. Hatching eggs should be unaffected.
I usually dose wazine in the water, wait three days and do the oral/topical ivermectins at the same time, redose wazine in two weeks from first date of administration. Pull eggs for two weeks after last wazine dosing. Sometimes I am lazy and don't redose the wazine but the horse paste wormer should be enough. I like to do it when birds are molting and then I don't have to worry about eggs but have done it when they are laying and just pitch the eggs. You could in theory feed them to your dogs but I never get that organized! I try not to do it in the intense heat but I would rather deworm them than have birds with a heavy parasite load. I am paranoid because I had a friend who lost a rooster and sent him to KState for necropsy and he had a lower bowel obstruction from tapeworms. Yuck!
I've heard a lot about chicken saddles and am thinking about making them and selling them - do you think there would be a market for this? Now that I'm a slacker retired person, I will have more time on my hands - especially since it is too hot to really do much outdoors during the day. Would love thoughts on this idea. I used to make my kids' clothes when they were younger and did a lot of quilting too!
Yeah my turkey deal fell through. The gal was supposed to make a couple phone calls and call me back but she hasn't. I tried calling the guy that had chicks and he didn't answer or call back.
My Dad's birthday is today and my brother is coming up from Waco,Texas late this evening for the weekend. My birthday is Tuesday. Not that he would come see me for my birthday but it's nice that he will be here. I've got to get a lot done today for a dinner we are having this evening. I also have to take some birds and eggs to town today too. I'd like to make it one trip but I don't see how.
I lost another little lemon cuckoo this morning. Crap! I don't know why. There was no wheezing or sneezing. I'm giving probiotics and vitamins in their water. Those chicks are old enough now they should be stable. I'm about done buying expensive eggs to hatch.
Trish the standards for US chickens and chickens in other countries is different in many breeds. I wouldn't worry about it unless you have several more major importers bringing in cream legbars in the next few years. If you aren't planning to breed them to show some day and just want them for the auto sexing and popularity why would you worry. The standards could be many years down the road and may be entirely different than what they have elsewhere.
Bummer about your turkeys and lemon cuckoo. I don't know what is going on with chicks right now. Solar flares or something?!? I lost 3 silkie chicks, fine one minute dead the next. No sign of illness just kicked right over and they were almost two weeks old? I am so scared it is the feed that is a problem and I have switched to purina starter but it may have been to late for some of them, I don't know what else is causing it...
Well one of my cochin hens has an impacted crop. Don't know how she managed that but I guess I will start with oil and go from there. This is my first impacted crop, I have had a lot of chicken health problems but this is a first for me. I hope she is ok, she is one of my nice mille fleur cochin hens and I would hate to lose her. It feels all hard and full of seed and didn't empty at all overnight. I brought her in because she was laying under the coop panting really hard and didn't try to get away or struggle at all when I picked her up. I have so many birds in the house right now!
