I just went out and there are two peachicks with the peahen and she is still sitting on the third. Now what to do. I really really would like her to raise them herself. But now I'm afraid that they'll drown in the water dish I have for the adults. I just dumped their big water pan they cool their feet in. I hope it doesn't get too hot out there for them. It has certainly kept them cooler so far. The humidity must be way up there. I am really sweating now.
Gotta get back out and finish chores. I just had to share!!!!
Wow - congratulations!!! I know nothing about peafowl - are they not prone to being good mothers usually? Is there a way you can fill a bowl with marbles/small rocks so the adults could still stand in it and cool the bottoms of their feet but the chicks wouldn't be able to drown?
I went out & was feeding the chicks in the grow-out pen this morning & looked into the dog house they hang out in & found two more dead chicks in there, a porcelain isabel from Chooks & another Swedish Flower Hen chick.
Well I just scheduled both of my GPs for being spayed next Tues. so wish me luck with that. I'll be glad to get it done so we don't have unexpected puppies from who knows what dog. I just don't feel like I want to breed them either, it's too much work & money to raise puppies.
So sorry about the dead chicks - it is always sad to lose them but especially if they are a special breed or something you were particularly hoping to hatch and raise.
We'll keep our fingers crossed for you everything goes okay with the surgeries and recoveries. Spays are a pretty routine surgery and they are the perfect age for it so I'm sure it will all go swimmingly and they'll be back working before you know it.
I have gotten more emails and phone calls today about Lucie. Of course nobody wants a pup that chases and mangles chickens. I tried to post an ad on craigslist with more info but it kept getting flagged. I don't know what peoples problem is but there are folks on there selling heeler pups for $400 but they won't leave my ad alone. It just got flagged again. I have tried posting a rehoming fee, not posting it. So annoyed. I mean we have a ton of money into this dog, we paid to buy her, spayed, vaccinated, microchipped her, she is on flea and heartworm prevention every month. Do people think everything should be free??
Well, yeah, of course she should be free. Duh. I do know what you mean though - there are so many people that want something for nothing. When we were looking for our other two dogs, I used to peruse the websites of KHS, all of the area rescues and CL on a daily basis and quite quickly realized that the dogs listed "free to good home", you get what you pay for. For free I got a dog that was unneutered, had had no shots, and had had no flea/heartworm medicine at all. It didn't take long to do the math and realize that by the time I did all of that, I was into the dog for more than the rescues were charging for an adoption fee. So I took money out of the equation and just looked for the perfect dogs for us. Both times we paid over $100 in adoption fees, but got dogs that were spayed, had all shots, heartworm tested negative and were on meds, and were microchipped. I consider the adoption fee a bargain price.
Even with Tory, we've already put money into her because although she was spayed when we got her, she wasn't on flea/heartworm so we had to start her on those right away and the meds for dogs of this size put a bit of a dent in your wallet.
Hang in there - hopefully the perfect home for her will come along. I'm not surprised that these days most people want a LGD to protect poultry but there must surely be people still out there looking for a dog to guard their sheep/goats.
Hahahaha! I tried that. I put LGD instead of livestock dog and that got flagged even quicker. I think if people don't know what it is the open it to see. I think they assume we are trying to make a quick buck but I want her to go to a good home and people who pay for a dog, even if its just a little, are usually going to take better care of it and value it more. I did put an ad up on RuralAds.com. I just talked to a guy who is looking for a general farm dog but I am not sure if they are really interested or not....
I wonder what the issue is. If you want to, post the text of your ad here and we can all look and see if we can see the reason it is being flagged. Unfortunately, the way CL works (if I understand it correctly) is that the first time it takes multiple flags from multiple IP addresses to get it taken down, but as time goes by, it takes fewer and fewer people flagging to have the same affect. I don't really get it - these people are what DS would call "no lifes", an expression which is pretty self-explanatory. I guess they really don't have anything better to do than sit there and flag ads all day. I pretty much never hit the flag button unless I see something that is obviously miscategorized. (I did that myself once, trying to post to "farm and garden" and accidentally hit the category below that which was "furniture". The funny thing is, the first time I ran the ad, it didn't get flagged, but I also didn't get many responses (not surprisingly) so I renewed it and it got flagged almost immediately due to being miscategorized.
