Consolidated Kansas

I'm going to get rid of one of my silkie cockerels. To you all, I'd give him away Free if anyone wanted him. If no one wants him, I'm going to sell him elsewhere. In the interest of full disclosure, he is a Pet Quality cockerel. He is 3 months old, 2 weeks. Hatched on May 6th, 2012. The only thing wrong with him is that I do believe he has split wing--his wings are still immature. If anyone wanted a cute silkie cockerel for a pet or just to knowingly try him out, here's your chance. He is VERY laid back, as soon as you pick him up, he goes limp and loves attention. Going to list him in a day or two if no takers.

He is a Splash... Here he is: (pictures taken today)

Cute!!!! I'd love him, but don't think 2 roosters would be a good idea :) I'm sure you'll be able to find a good home for him.

he's cute, I don't think I'll have a hard time. :)

He's adorable Hawkeye! I'm glad I'm no closer. It's obvious I'm not good at resisting chickens, especially blue toned ones.
LOL!!! so funny!! Yeah, I'm a BIG fan of the blues and splash!

I went out & was feeding the chicks in the grow-out pen this morning & looked into the dog house they hang out in & found two more dead chicks in there, a porcelain isabel from Chooks & another Swedish Flower Hen chick. So I decided to just take the dog house out of there for now, maybe it's not a great thing for chicks to be able to pile up in. I have a heat lamp out in the pen now for at night since it's been getting cooler, so if they get cold they can come sit under it. I will put the dog house back later on when it's just the Ameraucanas in there, that is who will have the pen in the end after everybody gets to the breeder coop, the general laying flock, & sold if they're extra roos or given away which ever is the case. I know I have at least 4 lavender Orp roos in there, but I would like to see which is going to be the nicest one first when they grow out before getting rid of any. I think I will keep one for my general laying flock because I will have enough hens to have two roos after the Speckled Sussex is in with his hens. I just love that lavender color & I think a rooster that color will just be gorgeous. I still can't tell what sex my black Ameraucanas are that I kept from this year's hatch, the black is just so hard to tell on because there are no other colors & with the pea comb until they get older I don't think I will be able to sex them. None of the 3 that I kept as of yet is showing signs of being a roo. I know that would be very unusual not to get at least one in there, but they're just not developed enough yet for me to be able to tell.

Well I just scheduled both of my GPs for being spayed next Tues. so wish me luck with that. I'll be glad to get it done so we don't have unexpected puppies from who knows what dog. I just don't feel like I want to breed them either, it's too much work & money to raise puppies.
So sorry about your chicks, such a bummer. I hate finding chicks dead especially when they die of something so preventable like being suffocated by each other! I don't know how many times that has happened to me and every time it is so upsetting. Good luck with the girls next Tuesday, I am sure everything will go great and they will be back on their feet in no time flat.

I just went out and there are two peachicks with the peahen and she is still sitting on the third. Now what to do. I really really would like her to raise them herself. But now I'm afraid that they'll drown in the water dish I have for the adults. I just dumped their big water pan they cool their feet in. I hope it doesn't get too hot out there for them. It has certainly kept them cooler so far. The humidity must be way up there. I am really sweating now.
Gotta get back out and finish chores. I just had to share!!!!

Woohoo!!!! That is awesome!! Are you sure you want her to raise them though??? I would be very nervous leaving them out there, do you think the male will hurt them??

Cute little guy! I love splash silkies, they are my fave but I just got rid of my split wing! I have two chicks in the brooder that are both blue from catdance silkies so I am hoping for one nice cockerel out of that.

I had five chicks but lost three to the bad bag of starter. Such a bummer. The last two left both have really nice toe separation and excellent foot feathering but they are still very young!

I have gotten more emails and phone calls today about Lucie. Of course nobody wants a pup that chases and mangles chickens. I tried to post an ad on craigslist with more info but it kept getting flagged. I don't know what peoples problem is but there are folks on there selling heeler pups for $400 but they won't leave my ad alone. It just got flagged again. I have tried posting a rehoming fee, not posting it. So annoyed. I mean we have a ton of money into this dog, we paid to buy her, spayed, vaccinated, microchipped her, she is on flea and heartworm prevention every month. Do people think everything should be free??

I had the same problem with craigslist when I advertised my first litter of pups. I was doing everything right. I finally gave up. I got sick of being flagged within minutes of posting an add. Thank goodness I had a waiting list for the second liter. I didn't have to put up an add and had three extra people asking for pups when they were all gone.
Yeah I am very nervous about letting the peahen raise her chicks. She has done it several times before but she was free ranging. Pete is being very protective of her and has been since she started sitting. He doesn't show any aggression toward them yet. If she could just teach them to eat then let me have them I'd feel much better. This is so exciting regardless. It's almost as cool as having my first chick of any kind hatch!!!

Good luck with your Catdance! I bought and hatched some Deb's birds, and those are turning out really nice. That is so frustrating about being flagged over and over. Why are people so insane about it?? It's like they have nothing better to do than to flag posts or sit and hawk lists. UGH! Can you post her under goats and horses? List the ad as a Horse canine or be really sly about it? When I list things, I often make a list at the bottom of the ad for words that will hit my post.

Hahahaha! I tried that. I put LGD instead of livestock dog and that got flagged even quicker. I think if people don't know what it is the open it to see. I think they assume we are trying to make a quick buck but I want her to go to a good home and people who pay for a dog, even if its just a little, are usually going to take better care of it and value it more. I did put an ad up on RuralAds.com. I just talked to a guy who is looking for a general farm dog but I am not sure if they are really interested or not....

I have been posting her under farm and garden on craigslist because she is not a pet dog she is a working animal. People put ads on for herding dogs all the time but I think people who are not familiar with them do not understand that a livestock guardian dog is also a working dog! Ugh.

If my blue silkies don't blossom into lovely young men I may be hitting you up if you have extra breeding quality silkies this fall.

Wow - congratulations!!! I know nothing about peafowl - are they not prone to being good mothers usually? Is there a way you can fill a bowl with marbles/small rocks so the adults could still stand in it and cool the bottoms of their feet but the chicks wouldn't be able to drown?

So sorry about the dead chicks - it is always sad to lose them but especially if they are a special breed or something you were particularly hoping to hatch and raise.

We'll keep our fingers crossed for you everything goes okay with the surgeries and recoveries. Spays are a pretty routine surgery and they are the perfect age for it so I'm sure it will all go swimmingly and they'll be back working before you know it.

Well, yeah, of course she should be free. Duh. I do know what you mean though - there are so many people that want something for nothing. When we were looking for our other two dogs, I used to peruse the websites of KHS, all of the area rescues and CL on a daily basis and quite quickly realized that the dogs listed "free to good home", you get what you pay for. For free I got a dog that was unneutered, had had no shots, and had had no flea/heartworm medicine at all. It didn't take long to do the math and realize that by the time I did all of that, I was into the dog for more than the rescues were charging for an adoption fee. So I took money out of the equation and just looked for the perfect dogs for us. Both times we paid over $100 in adoption fees, but got dogs that were spayed, had all shots, heartworm tested negative and were on meds, and were microchipped. I consider the adoption fee a bargain price.

Even with Tory, we've already put money into her because although she was spayed when we got her, she wasn't on flea/heartworm so we had to start her on those right away and the meds for dogs of this size put a bit of a dent in your wallet.

Hang in there - hopefully the perfect home for her will come along. I'm not surprised that these days most people want a LGD to protect poultry but there must surely be people still out there looking for a dog to guard their sheep/goats.

I wonder what the issue is. If you want to, post the text of your ad here and we can all look and see if we can see the reason it is being flagged. Unfortunately, the way CL works (if I understand it correctly) is that the first time it takes multiple flags from multiple IP addresses to get it taken down, but as time goes by, it takes fewer and fewer people flagging to have the same affect. I don't really get it - these people are what DS would call "no lifes", an expression which is pretty self-explanatory. I guess they really don't have anything better to do than sit there and flag ads all day. I pretty much never hit the flag button unless I see something that is obviously miscategorized. (I did that myself once, trying to post to "farm and garden" and accidentally hit the category below that which was "furniture". The funny thing is, the first time I ran the ad, it didn't get flagged, but I also didn't get many responses (not surprisingly) so I renewed it and it got flagged almost immediately due to being miscategorized.

I have more boys growing out-- have to wait to see how they turn out, hopefully they are all good and will leave me in a quandry on which one to keep! This one was an obvious fault.

Absolutely! I adopted both my dogs from a humane society! Caring Hands in Newton and one at the KShumane in Wichita.

Well.... if this lady shows up, I have my little cockerel sold on Craigslist! YAY! That was fast!! :)
