Consolidated Kansas

Wow, it's been a busy place here today, it took me awhile to catch up on reading! I'm not even going to try to respond to everyone. I've been working hard around here trying to get things done outside. I got all of the heated waterers hooked up to electricity except the one for the dogs this evening & I'll do that one tomorrow. I unloaded the whole truckload of cattails this afternoon & then put some more in the peacock/guinea hoop coop, the grow-out pen, the pen with the new rooster in it, & some under the topper I have sitting down in the woods that is there in case any of the cats or dogs want to get under it for shelter. My two GPs think I put that big pile of cattails out there where I'm storing it for now just for them. They go make themselves a nice bed in there & snuggle in. I had to run them out of there this afternoon to unload the truck & they weren't happy with me. I went & drug up the blue plastic barrel we have had sitting out there for years & put it in the peacock/guinea coop & put some cattails in that too in case some of the smaller birds want to get in there. Most of them get up on the roost that is across the whole width of the coop, but I'm not sure the smallest ones get up there yet. Anyway, it's in there if any of the birds want to use it, I figured I might as well use it for something. I know some people use barrels for shelter for their ducks & put hay or straw in them. I also went this afternoon & brought back two livestock panels that I bought from a gal on the Cowley County Pet Swap on FB. She sold me the two for $5 because they do have some damage. Both of them probably will have to be cut off about 2 feet because the welding has come loose that holds the squares together. I figured I could cut them off where the good part is & still have some usable panels. I hope to maybe use them & some others to make a pen for the little goats I want to get. She had some other fencing, but it may already be sold to someone else. She had some other stuff there I'm asking her about because she said the landlord had asked her to get the place cleaned up. I tried to look around while I was there & see what all else she might have that I could use, but it's quite a mess there & I couldn't quite take it all in at once. I did tell her that if the other person didn't take all the fencing I would take it.

Hawkeye, I'm so glad they got things cleared up for you, that's wonderful. Now hopefully you can get your van replaced. I wish you luck with your show, let us know how it all goes.

HEChicken, I'm so glad Ned Kelly is doing better! Yes, I do know how relieved you are. I was feeling relieved myself this evening that I have found & treated my problem in the grow-out pen. I also have found a new Salmon Favorelle rooster to replace my other one & will probably get him after vacation. The lady is going to do some trading with me in the spring for chicks so I am really thrilled about it. I think he may be a little younger than the rooster I had, but that's OK, he will grow. Now all I have to do is find a Wheaten Ameraucana rooster to replace that one. Checoukan, did IVY get rid of all of the Wheaten Ameraucanas she had? I was thinking she did, but I couldn't remember. I'm glad things are starting to go the right way for her & we all will be praying that she continues to have things go well for her & that they fall into place with this move.

Josie, I'm glad you got your pen covered safely. Keep us all up to date on how things are going with you. That was crazy about that coyote in the middle of the day, but you're not the first one that said they saw them in the daytime. Sunflowerparrot had told me that she saw two in the road by her house in the middle of the day just recently.

Were anyone else's GPs acting just crazy & wild today? Mine were going beserk this morning when I went out. They came home from somewhere just covered in mud & they were soaking wet. They were chasing each other around & wrestling & then when I let the chickens out of the coop they were bounding after them, not to catch them, just acting crazy. It must have been the cold air that was winding them up.

We're going in the morning to buy the wood for the supports for the roof of the coop. I can't wait to get the roof on so things inside can be cleaner & drier. I'm sure glad I had primed & painted that floor before we built the walls because there are leaves & dirt all over it. I haven't bothered that much to sweep it out lately because it all just gets back in there again. It's supposed to be only 52 for the high tomorrow & 30 tomorrow night. I'm really not ready for this cold weather!

KarenS, no I haven't heard of that before, is it a preventative or a treatment?

That sounds really good for a cold, blustery day like today. I've never made potato soup - I might have to look into doing that.

BUT!!! She has sent me a text, asking for my prayers, a job opening has opened in PITTSBURG!!!! She really hopes to be able to land that job!! I know those are not the kind of things to ask the Lord for, but she has made many applications, and has only gotten one interview. I was hoping some many think of her, and ask for a little something to help her along.
Wonderful news about the job opening and my thoughts are definitely with Ivy that she gets it. It will be nice for her to get the other house sold, and get fully moved and into a new job so her life can settle down again.

I have been having hip pain for the last three days not sure if it's just my brusitis or something else. Today my dh had a mri to see if timorous has shrunk, changed and they will stop chemo and start rediation. I so pray that it has shrunk and they can start the next step.
I hope your DH is able stop the chemo and move onto the radiation. I can't imagine what a toll this is, hanging over you. Hope your hip feels better too.

Wow, about 50 posts in the last 24 hours on this thread.
Yep, we're a chatty bunch

So here's something I ran across today. I was looking at different poultry meds and found acidified copper that says it is used to treat for blackhead. Has anyone heard of that before. It's just 1/4 tsp per gallon of water. I have some on hand so I'm kind of thinking about trying it just in case for my Tom turkey. I don't even remember what I got that stuff for originally.
I have never heard of that - is there a brand name for the acidified copper - or, if I were to go looking for it, what kind of store would I find it in, and what section?

HEChicken, I'm so glad Ned Kelly is doing better! Yes, I do know how relieved you are. I was feeling relieved myself this evening that I have found & treated my problem in the grow-out pen. I also have found a new Salmon Favorelle rooster to replace my other one & will probably get him after vacation. Congrats on the Salmon Favorelle rooster!

I am in here trying to type with frozen fingers, having just returned from a football game. It was fun to go to the game but my was it COLD out there. The wind picked up in the second half and it was tempting to leave early but I'm glad we toughed it out and stayed.

Ned continued to do well throughout the afternoon and evening, though he and Madge put themselves to bed in the coop early again this evening. I don't mind that trend at all when they are well - it just worried me last night that they were in the coop so early when Ned was so weak and lethargic. I really have to think at this point that worms were the problem, since the only thing that changed was the Ivermectin in the water. Once he had drunk enough for it to start to act on the worms, he started to feel better almost immediately. I am so thankful I didn't wait a day or two to do the worm treatment, as he seemed to be declining pretty fast at that point. It will be interesting to see if my feed consumption goes down and/or egg production goes up after this. I know some of the chickens had enough roundworms in them to be passing them in their poop but may have had other types of worms going on as well.

Oh, by the way, the Ivermectin in the water also works as a mite treatment apparently, but has to be repeated after 14 days to thoroughly eradicate them.

Ha Ha Lizzy! I didn't even notice I said her stove was cool. I alway say silly things.

WOW, HEChicken! Clearly he's feeling better, that's great news! I like the shower door idea because it's not glass. At first glance I thought it was a window and I just knew how long that would last around here. I will keep a look out for old shower doors, that's a great idea.

Danz, I'd be curious to hear what your seller says about your eggs.

Hawkeye, I'm so glad that they finally realized it's not your fault and I'm sorry to hear about your van. Do you have lots of help going on your mini vacation? I'm worried that this is just too much for you right now while you are recovering. Try not to over do it, I can't imagine that you won't over do it. That's a big deal.

Josie, that's for letting us know you made it down from the ladder safely.

I remember Fat Albert, Danz. Notice not too many caught the Davy Crockett comment? Ooooo, I know what the trinity is too, we came to Kansas from New Orleans when I was 10.

Joe, I'm glad to hear that your got your BOs moved in without event. That's great. How old are they? I have some that are about 6 weeks, they're bigger than my others the same age.

I did my chick check this evening and all are fine. The 2 weekers are hanging out close to the 1 wire side of their pen so they must be warm enough. The 6 weekers are in and out of their house like it's no big deal. They're all noisier though. I've been getting about 10 eggs per day and today it dropped to 4 and I'm saving to hatch again, I guess I won't have an incubator full this time. I told me dh I need another incubator so I can have one for incubating and one for lockdown. I think he's going to work on my big homemade incubator now. :) We have everything, it just needs put together. My 10 yo made a chicken shoe out of a foamie sticker, she really had a great idea and it stayed on until I took it off. It was a little flexible and slightly grippy. The bare foot slid around moreso than the shoed one. I'm wondering if I couldn't cut that stuff with my cricut and just make it a little better shape. This chick didn't need a shoe. Because it's kinda thick I think two shoes would be better even if they only needed one.

Tomorrow morning my 15 yo goes to the orthopedic for his pumpkin smashed finger.

Oh how fun to see Ruby laying her egg. The first time I saw that, was a pullet laying her first egg. I was hanging out a load of laundry and she was at my feet, chattering away to me, when I looked down to see her do the "poop squat", except instead of a poop, out popped a little egg. I don't think she knew that's what was going to happen either. In fact, I'm not sure she ever knew she laid an egg as she just kept walking like they do after they've stopped to poop. Since then I've been lucky to catch them a few times, and it surprised me to learn that they stand up to lay the egg. Because they sit in the nest during the "labor" portion, I just always assumed the egg came out while they were sitting there, but when the time comes, they stand up and start pushing, and sure enough before long, the egg pops out.

We thought the same thing, that they laid their eggs while sitting in the nest. DH was surprised to see how it works. He said she was just standing there, then her vent poofed out a little and out dropped an egg.

I wanted to thank you all for the prayers and well wishes, they mean so much to me! Thank you, thank you all!

I just wanted to let you all know that officially I found out today that I am NOT AT FAULT on the accident I had last Saturday. (duh!) I mean, I knew that, but the guy lied SO well, that the police report concluded that I was at fault. But after going over all the photo's and ignoring the officer's "opinion"--- they saw that what the other driver said was just flat out impossible! OMG, I could cry--- okay, I did already a little.

Bad news-- my minivan is totaled. Sigh. I figured so, with the air bags going off and the extensive damage to the doors and the front left side. *cry* But moving forward!

I'm desperately getting ready for Nationals tomorrow!!! I'm leaving here at 12:30. I got only 4 silkies washed. I need 4 more washed, but with my back and neck and my wrist hurting... it's all I could do for now. Maybe I can try again later this evening and get a couple more done. I will take lots of photos and let you know how it all went. I have no illusions at all that I will win anything, just hoping to have a great mini-vacation from home and have a fun time with chicken people!

See the things I missed while I was gone? I'm glad it was only your van that was totaled and not you, and glad the evidence showed you were not at fault.

Ok, danz you beat me to the potato soup, but I have fresh chili on the fire!!

Anyway, a report on Ivy. She has not said anything about the lookers/buyers, I think they wanted a couple of days to try to get the house in some kind of order.

For all the new folks, Ivy is my sister. About a 1 1/2 yrs older. WE are very close, but she lives in Hiawatha, Ks. I live near Columbus, Ks. They have bought and are moving to Oswego, Ks. She is trying to get a job in management here. So far nothing. Several on the site have met her, some have some of her birds, shes bought birds from some. Anyway, alot to ask, but its time she got something she really likes. Its been hard for her since she lost Katie, but she is coming back, and this move will be good for her. Katie was still alive when they moved up there, and she was there during the building process. I think she just needs to get away from there.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for Ivy.

I was going to make chili tonight, too, but we took too long at the garden. Sounds like a lot of us thought chili sounded good tonight! We spent an hour at the garden. I guess we didn't think it would take us so long, or more likely we weren't thinking at all because neither of us thought to bring gloves. We got a bunch of peppers, some small fennel that grew from seeds that dropped off the ones I had planted and harvested earlier in the summer, a bunch of tomatilloes (mostly small) and tomatoes of every color. I still saw a lot of bug holes, so the chickens may get more tomatoes than I do. I also harvested some more thyme and rosemary from my herb garden.

I have been having hip pain for the last three days not sure if it's just my brusitis or something else. Today my dh had a mri to see if timorous has shrunk, changed and they will stop chemo and start rediation. I so pray that it has shrunk and they can start the next step.

I hope you both find out good news and quickly.

I e-mailed Harris Farms to see if I could order a base for my waterer, but THEY don't even sell the bases separately
rant.gif
I called all around town to all the feed stores, co-ops, vets, and called the feed stores in MacPherson, too. NO ONE has Duramycin! Even most of the websites I can order from don't have it. Everyone says it is a vendor problem, but I can't even find anything as to why Durvet is having problems. My vet is going to do some research to see what I can use instead. I saw the post about Oxine, but I can't put all of my birds in a place that would be effective for use with a vaporizer
sad.png
I'm just not sure what else to use that is oral. I think Tylan only comes in injectable, or that is all that is available here. Looks like I'm going to have to bite the bullet and order something on-line. What was the discussion about respiratory diseases here awhile back? I can't even remember whose chickens. What antibiotic have you all used for respiratory disease?

Sapphire, I usually use Tylan powder in the water, I just have too many birds to be giving injections to if I have to treat all of them at once. Check the online stores that are closer so you could get it faster. There are other things you can use also, I have tried the Sulmet, but for the problem my birds had it wasn't effective. It is listed on label for coryza. It is a lot more in-expensive than the Tylan, so you might give it a try. Those are the two that I can think of right off the top of my head that you can get without a Vet.

Oh, hawkeye, I am so glad you are going. I was going to get a hold of you, but lost your number somewhere. I use small pet taxi's to take my birds. I cut cardboard, and make a divider. Course my birds are smaller than yours, but I still like the pet taxi's. They are lighter than those wood coops some take the birds in. If you have to walk any distance, I cant handle the weight very well. But he taxi's are light and easy to carry. With 8 birds, guess you could make you a wagon to pull along.
Yes, still going. Over the past few weeks, in preparing for Nationals, I have been buying the Pet Taxi's (enclosed plastic crates) on the cheap to haul my birds in! So I have enough crates, I think. I have two big ones I can put 4 girls in one and 4 boys in the other. Then I have a couple extra, because I have already worked out a deal to buy two more pullets from another breeder... and I'm hauling home a bird or two for someone else. And then I have an extra crate in case I see a bird I want to buy! LOL I figure it's a one time deal, don't know when they'll have the show this close to me again! Next year, E Nationals will be in Florida, I think! I didn't get any of my boys washed. I feel bad about it-- I would never bring a dirty bird, usually. They don't look bad, but I'm going to have to clean up their feet. But I just couldn't do it-- my back hurt too much yesterday and I ended up laying down.

Update: I have not fallen off a ladder for those concerned parties!
wink.png
I am about done with the tarped pea chick cage and have a few windows to do here and there.
So glad this worked out in your direction!!! Wish I could come over and help you wash birds or better yet I could bring them to the kennel and wash them there and it would go super fast I bet!
Sorry but what are weevils? I kind of laughed because it reminded me of those little people weebles for kids but evil, I guess. Then I couldn't help but chuckle at the sight of a grain bag full of evil weebles......sorry, too much cold air I think!!
I need to tarp up my silkie pen outside-- they are going to blow away! I meant to do that THIS week, but I got a little "sidetracked". Sigh. I wish you could have washed birds for me! That would have been awesome! SO FUNNY about your evil weebles. I know what weevils are, but just because they used to always get in the grain if you're not careful. They are nasty buggers.

So glad to hear you have been cleared! So now that the accident is officially not your fault, it should be on the other guy's insurance to get your minivan replaced, right?

Good luck at Nationals!

Weevils are little bugs that like grain. They get in and eat it all and leave their poop behind - nasty little things. I agree with the others though that if you can catch them early enough before they've eaten all the food and turned it into dusty poop, the bugs themselves are an additional protein treat for the birds.
Yeah, they said I should be finding out and hopefully getting a check for my minivan next week. We have 6 more months to pay off the one I wrecked. Sigh. So this will be the first time we do not go out and buy a brand new car-- we can't afford it. But I already checked with CarMax, and IF the minivan doesn't sell before I get my check, it looks like I will pick up a 2010 minivan (same van) but it will be silver in color instead of white. My luck it will be sold, and I'll have to hunt for another one. OH well. Can't help it, I'm at the mercy of the insurance.

Thanks for the luck! I think with 4 unwashed boys, I have no hope in heck on placing with them. Blah. OH well, 2 of the 4 I'm taking will be for sale up there. They will be shown and I'm going to write in "for sale" and see if I get any bites. They are cute, but I don't need so many roos!

Hawkeye my prayers are still coming. So glad to hear that. I can't believe any officer with traffic experience couldn't have seen that in the first place. I also can't believe you are up to going to the show but it will be a good thing to take your mind off all that has happened and give you a break. Best of luck to you, dear girl!

I've got stuff on to make some of my special potato soup for dinner. It already smells wonderful in the house. I love the smell of the basic onions, celery, etc that they call trinity in the south. It's going to be nice hot carbohydrate fat filled comfort food.
Yeah, the officer, I feel was biased. He stood around talking to the guy who flipped the U Turn in front of me and they talked about guns, gun powder and just rocked back and forth on their heels laughing and having a good 'ole time shooting the breeze out there. I didn't see it, but my brother, dad and my brother in law all have told me similar stories, and none of them had a chance to talk to each other. The driver of the truck I hit-- he had Armed Infantry Army tags on his truck, and Army stickers all over his truck, his doors, his back window, the tailgate. I bet the Deputy was x-military and he just figured that guy wouldn't lie and so he just didn't do his job. I'm tempted to file a bias report on him and see what the Attorney General does with him, since it will be investigated through that office. The Deputy needs a wake up call, what a flippin' idiot.

I LOVE potato soup!!!! I make an awesome potato soup, too. I use a potato soup mix for the base, and then I boil potatoes with the skins on (I LOVE the skins!) and then cube them and throw them into the base, milk, and shredded cheddar cheese and a spoon full (or two) of sour cream, and I have a heavenly potato soup my whole family loves. I usually just throw in dry onion flakes, if I don't have a real onion on hand.

Ok, danz you beat me to the potato soup, but I have fresh chili on the fire!!

I sure miss having Ivy on here. I didn't realize that Katie had lived with them in that house up there. That just made me tear up and feel so sad for Ivy losing her daughter like that. I think it would just break me forever to lose a child, I can't imagine what she feels.. I'm sure good memories are in that house too, but it'll be great for her to move closer to you and family that can get together more often and have more good times together. I will start praying for her! The power of prayer is so incredibly strong, and I sure hope that it will help her get that job! You are such a fantastic sister and friend for her.

I have been having hip pain for the last three days not sure if it's just my brusitis or something else. Today my dh had a mri to see if timorous has shrunk, changed and they will stop chemo and start rediation. I so pray that it has shrunk and they can start the next step. Dh said yes to the pellet stove insert so going to order that soon I just need to make sure the one. I picked will fit in our fireplace. I found some custom made thermal curtains on craigslist and she gave me extra ones I put those up today and I can tell the deference.
Have a nice evening and stay warm
Oh no, I'm sorry about your hip pain! I hope it eases up, could it be the in coming weather? I hope it's good news with your husband! I think a pellet stove would be fantastic! Good luck hunting down the right size and getting it put in. :) We bought thermal curtains last year. For 11 years, we've had regular curtains on our picture window and it let in soooo much heat in the summer and the cold in the winter. What we really need is to replace that window. BUT, I ordered and bought these beautiful thermal curtains that matched our new furniture/paint last year and we could not believe how well they did their job! They are really heavy, but I LOVE how it blocks the heat and cold. Definitely a great alternative to putting in new windows!

Oh my gosh, you guys crack me up and Hawkeye, I just couldn't be happier for you! Have a great time at Nationals! Checoukan, I'm praying Ivy gets the job or a better one!

Trish44, thanks so much for the heads up on the mites. That's just so sad. Thanks for sharing with us.

I've learned so much from you guys and I really appreciate all of it.
Thanks Karen! What the heck is acidified copper and why do you already have this on hand? What else is it used for?

Good luck with your new little roo! That's great. Sounds like you're all ready for winter! I feel like I'm so behind now. I was going to use this week to get my tarps up, etc. Now, I'm leaving this weekend and I still have done nothing but lay around this week. Granted, I had a good excuse, but I hate doing things last minute. Good luck with raising the roof! :)

That sounds really good for a cold, blustery day like today. I've never made potato soup - I might have to look into doing that.

I can hardly believe you've never made potato soup! It's a staple around here! LOL So glad that Ned Kelly is feeling better. Poor guy. I treated my birds with Wazine a few weeks back. I never did do the second treatment, I should get that done when I get back. Where did you get your ivermectin? Did you get it at Atwoods? I may have to ask you again, because I'll be gone a couple of days and dont know how well I'll catch up.

No, I've had like no help this week. My parents were here for a while. They are back in Seattle now. But they were here when I had the accident-- I called them to get the kids when I was taken to the ER. But my husband has been gone all week to Philly for a business trip with Boeing. So I've been fighting with kids myself and trying to keep them fed. I gave up and just ordered pizza one night and then bought frozen dinners the other nights. I could not stand up long enough to cook over the stove. And if you knew me-- I am TOTALLY against pre-packaged frozen dinners. UGH. Oh well, you find yourself doing what you have to do, I guess. I'm sure one week of crappy food won't hurt us.

I'm ready for my DH to come home, though. Although, his plane gets here at 3:30 today and I'll already have left with my oldest son to go to Missouri for Nationals with all the birds in the rear. My MotherInLaw let me borrow her minivan!!! Which is crazy-- because if I were her-- I wouldn't let me borrow her minivan after a major wreck like mine! LOL!!

Since the insurance were fighting over who's fault, I never got a rental. And now that it's settled-- they said I can get a rental in a couple of days when they get it sorted out with the other side. So I'm left without a vehicle. I traded my DH's car for my MIL's minivan. So she's driving it-- I can't get 3 kids into it, anyway.

I sure hope your son won't have too much damage to his smashed finger! I bet you are very nervous about the outcome. Sure hope it's going to be alright. That chick shoe you made is really neat! Fits on him perfect!! Did you put the sticker on and then cut out the toes?? Beautiful job!!

We thought the same thing, that they laid their eggs while sitting in the nest. DH was surprised to see how it works. He said she was just standing there, then her vent poofed out a little and out dropped an egg.

See the things I missed while I was gone? I'm glad it was only your van that was totaled and not you, and glad the evidence showed you were not at fault.

I hope you both find out good news and quickly.
Yeah, it's odd how they will go in and lay down for a while and then when they're ready, they stand up and let the egg drop out. I should try to get video of my girls. It's pretty neat. Sounds like you got a good haul from the garden! Have fun using it! :)

I e-mailed Harris Farms to see if I could order a base for my waterer, but THEY don't even sell the bases separately

I saw Duramycin at Atwoods just last week here in Derby. I have the Denagard that has worked for me. I also bought a big packet of OxyTet-- I got that at Atwoods, too. It's a very broadspectrum antibiotic. I have a vial of Baytril still. But I think the OxyTet might be your best bet or the Tylan powder. I'd get that Tylan 50 powder ordered, if it were me, it's not very expensive, and will go in the water.

Those are the two that I can think of right off the top of my head that you can get without a Vet.

agree! But I didn't think the Tylan powder was that expensive, either, though. If you look around and price check, you can get a good deal.

I think I got the acidified copper when I was fighting the fungal infection with the chickens after being in the basement but found the Oxine cure that was recommended on BYC so ran to the vet supply in Wichita and used it. The acidified copper mention said it was a treatment for blackhead so I'm assuming that meant cure? I can't even remember where I got it but it's been awhile. It's in a package like the citric acid you get with the Oxine kit. The copper can be used as a fungacide so maybe I was thinking about using it in the basement, who knows now.
