Lizzy When an egg freezes it kind of dries it out. I think if you thawed it in the refridgerator and used it right away it would still be good. I saw something a while back somewhere on freezing eggs. You might do an internet search on that subject and see how they recommend thawing and using.

I think it bit a huge hunk out of our toosh! It was 15 when I got up with the wind blowing like crazy.Even the ducks were huddled up together.
Our thermometer was reading 12 this morning - such a change from a day or so ago. I have birds huddled and not looking happy about it - if they'd had more time to acclimatize I'm sure they wouldn't be feeling it as much. I plugged in a heated water bowl and they were all appreciative of the water that was room temperature from being in the house all night so probably felt downright warm to them.

Hi guys! Thank you so much for all the well wishes! It seemed to take forever but I finally had my first normal day a couple days ago and I just hit the ground running. It feels so good to feel normal again. I haven't caught up with everyone on here yet, but will soon. The kids and I managed to "spring clean" the house and get the birds ready for the cold weather just in time, and in one day. We worked like a bunch of dervishes! I've also managed to get my Christmas shopping almost completely done. I'm going to try my hand at making my own laundry detergent today and hand soap this week. I've always wanted to make my own soap and just never got around to it.

DH is working lots of hours since they cut his group in half at Beech. He's sure had his hands full with me being ill on top of that. Gotta love a guy who just steps up and doesn't make you feel any worse than you already do about not being able to keep up with your part of the deal. Oddly enough, the kids are really glad when I'm back on top of things because Dad is far less strict than I am and they don't enjoy the chaos for very long. It's lovely to be back on the job and everyone's so appreciative!

I have one son home with the flu, but we caught it quickly with some Tamiflu and he's improving rapidly. Good thing cause he has a concert tomorrow evening -- hope he makes it!

Hope everyone is doing well and almost ready for the holidays!
So glad to hear you are doing better - we have all been thinking of you! And wow, you are not kidding about being back to normal - I don't have that much energy on the best days :)

Also, as you may have heard, I got 2 more geese late last week. When I did the chores this morning, I found my first egg from them. It was frozen, so I wonder if it was from yesterday morning and my DH didn't notice it when he took care of the birds yesterday... Either way, it has been well below freezing all day yesterday, last night, and this morning so it probably didn't take long for it to freeze. Do you think the egg is still good to use in cooking/baking? As you can see, the egg is huge! That is MY hand pictured...
Congrats on the egg. I probably wouldn't use it because with that crack in it, you never know what bacteria might have also found their way in. I would give it to the dogs or feed it back to the birds if it were me.

Danz, you were asking about what company I use for the calendars so I wanted to let you know about my experience with My Publisher this year. I think this is the fourth year in a row I've used them but I couldn't remember how fast they processed the order in the past. Immediately after submitting the order I got an email confirming it was submitted. Twelve hours later I got an email saying they had processed the order and it was available to view online. And this morning I got an email confirming the order is complete and has been shipped. Since I only submitted it around 11pm Friday night, I'm pretty impressed with their processing time, and no longer fear I won't have them in time to give as gifts on Christmas morning.

I went out & found one of my peahens dead in the pen today, I'm really upset. I had noticed one of them sneezing yesterday & started some Tylan in there. I don't know if it was just too late or she had something else wrong with her. I haven't gotten her out of there yet because she's all the way to the back of the hoop coop. So that just leaves me a pair now, I sure hope the others don't get sick.
Oh no Trish! I'm so sorry about your pea! Poor thing, and I know you work so hard trying to keep everyone healthy and well cared for. I'm very sorry.

I had to laugh at one of the girls late this afternoon. She obviously didn't want to get in the water so she was standing outside their big bin they bathe in and was catching water in her beak and throwing it on her chest. I guess she thought the water would be warmer that way! silly goose. While I was out freezing my tooty off I kept thinking if I had the chicken trailer done I wouldn't have to be setting up any heated water bowls for whomever was in there. I really really need to concentrate on that and quit putting it on a back burner.
I am cold and tired. That was so much work. I moved the chicken tractor and put plastic on one side of it to block the wind. Then I put the new cookie tin heater I made in there. It must have worked okay. The birds were all in the house part but after I set that up that way they all came out. I do like the cookie tin heaters just because they put heat out other than what keeps the water from freezing. I have no heat in the hen house but I have a cookie tin heater in there with no water on it yet. It keeps the building a little warmer. I almost hate to put the water inside cause the chickens always manage to spill some.
So even the geese think it's too cold! Funny! I'm so sorry about your grain mill and surely if you just ordered it, they will understand you didn't have time to mail the card in and they will exchange your mill. Let's hope! I love the cookie tin heaters, too! I have everything all plugged back in now. I did have to move my water for the layers back into the coop so it can sit on the cookie tin heater for the winter.... here we go again! It's NO fun having that water inside the coop, but at least for the most part, they don't knock it around. I'm with you-- I also like how it heats up the coop. Just enough to take the edge off of it.

I have two heated water bowls from the store that have the cord wrapped in coiled wire and we zip tie the cords to the fence so they can't drag the bowls around. We also use electric tape on all the connections between the bowl and the cord. I have a black horse tub that I bought last year that is probably 8 inches deep and about 2 feet long and a foot and a half wide that I dump at night and refill in the morning for bathing and head dunking. It doesn't freeze too bad during the winter and gives them some wash water for most of the day. They will absolutely unplug and chew on an exposed electric cord though. Everything goes into the goobies mouths!!! I find half the yard in their water buckets but I never see them carrying things which I think is funny.

I need to get another heated bowl for one of my big coops today. They are drinking a whole bowl of water in less than a day which amazes me. I listed some birds for sale this weekend on craigslist and got a really low ball offer on the pea chicks. I can't decide what to do. I am trying to thin numbers but I also want to make sure they go somewhere they will be cared for and not just let loose to roam and be eaten by things. I wish they would have emailed me some info about themselves with their offer instead of just a really low offer and nothing else. Like, we have a really nice flight pen built and feed our birds this feed etc. That is what I would do if I was going to offer someone almost half what they were asking for their birds. What do you guys think?
I would love to buy those dog water bowls, but I'm so cheap! LOL I just have the cookie tin heaters instead, about half the price. The down side is that I had to make them. I'm with everyone else on the low ball offer. IF they truely knew what pea's go for and what they are worth, they never would have offered that. I mean..... 2 shows ago, I low balled a lady for one of her roosters I wanted to buy, but she had him listed for $175 and I offered $100. I felt a bit embarrassed just asking that!! LOL I know the value of a bird and if you pay the price for a GOOD bird, then you're darned well going to take every measure to make sure you don't lose your investment! I would be tempted to respond with the fact that your birds are very nice and investment birds and worth every penny of what you were asking.

I'd be really dubious about the care they will get if they make a lowball offer before even coming to see them. Sounds like someone who wants something for nothing and the less value they place on them at purchase, the less they will value them after purchase. If I were you, I would hold off and hope for interest from someone else - that's if you have the flexibility to wait before selling.

I agree with Danz that it sounds like you have too many roosters. Personally I would eat a few of them if it were me.

That north wind is really howling tonight - what a change from the balmy weather we've been experiencing up until now. Brrrr. I brought all of the water bowls into the house for the night so in the morning I can take them out and they will have water in them, not ice. I guess in the morning I will have to plug in the heated water bowl. I've been putting off doing it because I know the ducks will just splash all the water out of them in no time. All the birds went into the coop tonight, including two ducks who haven't slept in it in weeks. Usually they fly down to the pond for the night but I guess with the colder weather they decided the coop was a better place to spend the night tonight after all.
Wow, too cold for ducks? It WAS cold last night-- and no fun! I need to get some extra bedding and get it in the silkie pen.

I think it bit a huge hunk out of our toosh! It was 15 when I got up with the wind blowing like crazy.Even the ducks were huddled up together.
NO DOUBT! I was not ready for this cold! Yikes! Last night I was securing a heat lamp in the silkie pen and getting the extension cord to get it plugged in. All in the windy cold. Geez. I also need to finish up the little bit of plastic that needs to be put up on that pen. What I have up now does keep the wind off of them, but they need more protection, because where that one side is open on top-- the windy was swirling down onto them from above. I'm going to run out today and buy more plastic. Which is why it didn't get done, because I ran out. And then I kept forgetting to buy more! Ugh, I wish I had done it when it was warmer. Got them all set up with the heat lamp and they huddled under it. So I hope that took the edge off of the night for them. I think after I get it wrapped on the top East side, they will be a lot more comfortable!

Pure Buff Orpingtons
Hi All...hope I can jump in here with a question. Up until joining BYC I thought a chicken was a chicken was a chicken. I knew a lot of different breeds but never knew about "pure bred" or vs. "hatchery grade." Personally, I order all my birds from a hatchery and it works well for me. However, I work with a gal who has a daughter heavily involved in 4-H and our county fair. She was disappointed last year when her hatchery (Murray McMurray) Buff Orps didn't past standard. She asked me this morning about breeders or smaller hatcheries that would sell pure (is that the right term?) BOs. I said I hadn't a clue but would post a question to some folks who might. So, what do you think? Should she be looking for a smaller hatchery or a breeder? And if anyone knows of one or both, please let me know. Thanks for all your help!!

WOW-- your back to normal makes me look like I'm laying around all day long! I don't know how you manage, but I understand why you got so sick now! You work VERY hard. Glad your DH still has a job out there! At least that is a relief, even if he is working extra hours. My DH is laid off in March from Boeing. They already sold off his division. He did get an offer from the new company that took over that division in St Louis. He's still hoping for something here in Wichita, so he didn't say "no" to them, but has been talking with them about pay, etc and kind of putting them off a bit. He said he won't move until his termination date because he wants to collect his full severance plus the bonus per month that he was promised if he stayed on until the end. So he's just trying to hold up his end with Boeing. Glad you caught the flu early with your son. I've never used Tamiflu before! Sounds like that might be good stuff. Is that OTC?

I have a couple of those 1 1/2 gallon heater water bowls from Orschelns. My silly birds (ducks and geese) try to bathe in them, but they usually leave enough for drinking as well. I have 2 bowls for 9 ducks and 3 geese, and that seems to hold them over for the day. I empty and re-fill them morning and night.
I just went out to do my chores. The NWS website says it is 13*F in town with a windchill of -3*F. We are in a big hole here, so it is usually colder here. After I gave my birds more water, all of them were trying to bathe in it. Silly birds don't act like they even notice how frigid it is outside.

Also, as you may have heard, I got 2 more geese late last week. When I did the chores this morning, I found my first egg from them. That is a HUGE egg! WOW!!!!! I wouldn't eat it because of the crack. But if it were just frozen and no crack, then I'd go ahead and keep it/eat it. What good geese to be laying such big eggs for you! Sheesh, what are they? Part Emu? LOL

So good to see you back! I can't believe your energy. I need someone to Christmas shop for me. I still haven't left that house. What I do have done has been on line. I found out last night my DH took the week off. We have been days without a washer cause he has been working on his trucks. So maybe we'll get the new one installed this week. I haven't even opened the box yet.
I just helped the last little Oladnsk out of the shell. He seems to be fine but wasn't making any progress getting out. I just tossed the last two eggs. Neither of them were alive. The babies don't seem real interested in eating or drinking. I may have to move them into a smaller bin to get them started. Silly birds. I've never had chicks that didn't act like they were starving.
Glad your little Oladnsk made it out okay. Maybe they do need to be by themselves until they get the hang of it. Nice to have a whole week off with your DH! I'm looking forward to Christmas when mine gets quite a bit of time off! Really, I'm looking forward to sleeping in a bit and not having to get out of our jammies right away. ha!

Yeah, the cold is no bueno. I HATE winter. HATE. I can't say it enough! LOL I need to get out there and check water and refill feed. I need to run to Walmart here in a bit to get plastic and Atwoods for more shavings and feed. I'm just hanging around here in the house in front of the space heater. My DH likes to keep this house on the cooler side but it annoys the heck out of me. We used to argue about that all the time back when we were first married. But after 12 years, I give up and got myself a space heater to sit next to me . He thinks that throws off the heater in our house, but I don't care. I used to go and change it and make it warmer while he was at work, but it was a hassle to remember to turn it back to the original setting before he got home! LOL I'm not a very sneaky person at all, so I got caught like over half the time. hehehe I would probably be cold in a warm house, too. So it's just me. He says it's plenty warm in here and the kids dont' complain they are cold--even when they are running around in their underwear, so it probably is me. I HATE the cold and winter. I just want to be wrapped up in a heating pad all day long.

I really need to get dressed and get out there and get the water and feed taken care of. Ugh.... I'm hoping it will warm up a bit before I head out.

Wow, too cold for ducks? It WAS cold last night-- and no fun! I need to get some extra bedding and get it in the silkie pen.
Well, it was actually kind of funny. Four of the ducks routinely sleep in the coop and the other two spend the night on the pond. So, last night one of those two was busily preening while the "losers" filed into the coop. You know, because she's way too good for that nonsense. Meanwhile, her best friend was following the other four into the coop. Miss Preener suddenly looked up to the see the tail of her best friend disappearing through the pop door and, at the thought of being left outside by herself, ran as fast as you can run on those huge duckie paddles they call feet. She couldn't get in the door fast enough once she realized she was going to be left out all by herself.

Oh Hawkeye, I meant to tell you, the Silkies are still doing just great. They were actually two of the birds this morning who didn't seem in the least bothered by the cold. Some of my other birds were huddled looking a wee bit miserable, but the Silkies were out running around looking perfectly happy. Until yesterday they've lived in the chick pen but I decided to integrate both them and the two chicks they've been living with today, because I don't have a way to heat the waterer in the chick pen and it is plastic so will crack if it freezes. I let them out every afternoon for the last hour or so anyway, so its not like they are brand new to the flock - its just that they haven't spent a whole day in the main flock before today. I stayed for awhile to make sure they were doing okay but no one else was paying them any heed so I'm happy to have the whole flock integrated. It will make life easier not to have to fill multiple feeders and waterers everyday, though the Silkies have not figured out the pop door so I will probably have to put them in the coop manually each night. I've considered trimming their crests so they can see better. Would you forgive me?

The BO's you get from hatcheries should be "pure" BO - its just that they will be low quality, and that pretty much goes for any hatchery. The hatcheries produce chicks in high volume and don't focus too much on quality. They stick any of BO roo in with a dozen BO hens, and incubate the results. If you are looking for show quality birds, you are always best to go with a good breeder. I would start by looking for a thread dedicated to the breed in which you are interested, and either start reading on there, or simply ask for recommendations on breeders who consistently produce high quality birds. Just be prepared to pay significantly more than you would for a hatchery bird.

My DH is laid off in March from Boeing. They already sold off his division. He did get an offer from the new company that took over that division in St Louis. We'll be keeping our fingers crossed something comes up for him so you guys can stay in Wichita.

It is so cold. I still have no way to keep the water from freezing. Does anyone have any ideas on things I can make other than the cookie tin one because I have no cookie tins?
All the birds are all puffed up like little fluffy balls and following me around complaining lol. Time to get used to the cold guys.....

So we just got around to getting the xmas tree up last night, my daughter wanted to make a memory chain out of the turkey hens feathers ( a memory chain is a wiccan holiday tradition of making a chain for the tree full of memories from the past year, we use paper or rope etc and attach photos or drawings or objects ,once it is on the tree we talk about those memories) we placed it on the tree and both my son and daughter began to cry, which in turn made me cry. We shared the memories and finished decorating. I never knew they could be so touched by those hens. They both agreed on getting 2 more hens but those 2 would never replace Spirit and Storm. Spirit and Storm if you all remember are the 2 taken by the predator and heads eaten.

They are Embden geese. I don't know for sure how old they are, but I would guess at least a couple years old. The previous owners told me that they were getting an egg every 1-2 days before they gave the birds to me. I'm just hoping that they/she (I don't know if the other one is a goose/gander) at least keep laying for a while. When I got my other two groups of birds, they laid one egg right at the beginning and haven't laid anything since. Hopefully, the geese won't follow suit there.

Hatchery birds are purebred. Like all things there can be an occasional slip up but it is unlikely. You may end up with some awesome hatchery birds or some that are just birds. There is nothing wrong with a bird that doesn't meat the standard of perfection unless you are going to show it. They still produce eggs and still are good eating. You probably aren't going to find a top quality buff Orp unless you find a breeder who does show and has exhibition lines.
I do know one person in Missouri that has a trio of exhibition BOs. He paid $75 a bird for them. I have no idea if he has had any offspring or what he would sell them for, but I could ask.

The cookie tin heater is probably the best option for home-made. You might ask around friends and family to see if anyone has a cookie tin you can use. I never buy cookies in the tin but found some at the thrift store for about a dime apiece.

However I really don't use the cookie tin heater much. It worked fine but in my previous coop I worried about it getting too hot and starting a fire in the bedding. So what I did in the winter is make multiple trips outside with warm water. We have an electric jug that boils water so I would fill it up and pour it into a water bowl full of ice and in seconds it was cool enough for them to drink. At night I always brought in all the waterers so the water was "house temperature" (62 or so) when I took it out to them in the mornings. Depending on the temperature during the day, sometimes that was all they needed. Other times that would freeze in a couple of hours and I'd have to keep taking hot water out. I use a black rubber bowl for water and I placed it where it got max sun and that helped a lot too.

Now I could use the cookie tin heater since I have a concrete slab to put it on so don't need to worry about fire. But in the meantime I was gifted several dog water bowls so I am using one of those today.
