If it doesn't see what's coming does it keep the smell away? Or can it spray still once it's hit? I'd just hate to have my whole coop sprayed!

It is now mating season for skunks raccoons and Opossums; you can expect them to be out and about. I have a skunk that lives under my deck. As long as he is not eating my chickens I would rather have him than a coon. In any case I have trapped and relocated many skunks. If you catch them in a live trap they will not be able to raise their back legs up and spray. I also throw a tarp over the trap before I pick it up just in case. Just take them a mile or two away and release them. I just pull the catch bar and open the door and they run out. Never had a problem; except the one I shot with a 22. It leaked as I carried it away in the brush with a shovel. One dug under a chicken pen once: the one I shot. Other wise they have not created a problem for me. Yes they do spray once and a while somewhere in the yard. But then I live in the country to live with the country!

Its about a 50\\50 chance of him letting go after its hit. Even with a very clean, quick, kill they will sometimes still let go. This one has been trying to find or make a hole under my foundation\\ sidewalks for a while now. I walked out to go to work and he took off running away from my house. Let him get far enough away we could live with the smell and popped him. This one happened to not spray, but like I say ya never know. BTW, I went home for lunch and you still get the strong "skunk" smell as you walk in the door. I think he got in a squabble with some other critter before we met thrus. morning and sprayed down the area. Or the mate is hanging around real close. I'v lived in the same spot for that last 20 years, its this way every year... I do love the wild life, thats why I live here, but I draw the line when it wants to move inside...

I've shot 2 in the last two weeks. Breeding season for them definately has them out and about.

Yes, even if they don't see it coming they'll let loose. And I can tell you from personal experience it's and old wive's tale that if they can't raise their tails they can't spray......they can still spray, they just can't aim it as well.

Relocating wild animals is illegal in most areas. All it does is put your problem off on someone else.

Hey ........... the Ups guy finally showed up. Tree taps! Taped 5 trees today 4 sugar maples and one aprocot. Guess this its species specific on sap flow but one tree squirted me! the other maples are dripping and expect about a gallon at sun set. The aprocot probably wont even drip. I figured it would be first as its one of the first to bloom. Still I bet its great syrup.

By the way there is no shortage of any of the afore mentioned animals. And its only rare cases that you can relocate to a habitat that is not already fully supplied with the species in question. The issue of relocation is really just compassion for the individual. The global view is crowding, competition and possibly disease transfer. After death there is nothing for the animal, but your own conscience! In regard to animal rights!, I have to say the law does not rule me. What is right does!

Well I wouldn't feel right dumping a problem animal onto someone else.

How is it compassionate to an animal to dump it in a strange area where it's out of it's territory and will likely die from attacks from the resident animals?

Well the next ones I trap I'll come donate to your neighborhood then.

My Point was that if I drive a mile in either direction I will be on Corp Ground that's their issue being there are more then 2000 aces of that up here . I am sure that the KDWP would be happy to have them.
