Thanks, but Miss R, as I call her, is looking for something fancy to hatch and call her own :) She wants silkies - but those just aren't going to work out with the barnyard chickens - so, we are thinking speckled sussex - (She will lose interest as soon as they're a few days old.. so I need something that can fit into my purpose of laying and free ranging.)
Absolutley, Good luck I hope you find what you are looking for.

Why don't you think Silkies will work out with the barnyard chickens? Mine get along great with my flock, most of which are.....barnyard chickens. They sleep in the coop, exit the chicken door, eat, drink, dust bathe and at night go back in the chicken door. The only difference is they don't get up on the roosts - they just huddle in a pile on the floor of the coop.

I've been told they're more fragile and need heat, etc. I want chickens that just run around like everyone else out in the fields and then lock them up at night in the coop no matter how cold it is...

Hawkeye, you were right, the weak one didn't make it. I was up from 2:30-4:30am and I kept trying to get it ot eat/drink and encouraging it to move around becuase it's breathing was weak, then it got crackly. By this morning, it had passed. It's so sad. It does sound like your dh is very sick, that's a very high temp for an adult. I hope his fever stays away but you may need to get insistent with him. There's no sense in letting it go and it'll cost so much more in so many ways and it's simply not worth it. What kind of patterns do you make Hawkeye?

Danz, with my last hatch I had a few with unabsorbed yolks and there was one chick that was removed from the shell and another that was still attached to the shell. They both were weaker and sort of just laid there. Overnight, the one that was unattached to the shell the yolk dried up but was still hanging there. The one that was attached to the shell the yolk actually absorbed. The downside is that they are stuck lying on their side and even after that they had to readjust their muscles to be able to walk and I had to cut little things to get them loose from the shell. They did fine though. This time I made sure I turned them while they were attached to their shell, and they did better that way. If I tape up the yolks, how long does the tape stay on before it falls off? Did it go ahead and absorb? Paper tape as in medical paper tape? I'm scared of dropping eggs too so I almost always hold them just a couple of inches above the incubator so they can't fall far. I've dropped them, but they've never broken. It scares me so bad, I'm so sorry Maidenwolf. I'm sorry about your olandsk roo Danz. I wish I knew what to say or had ideas but I'm still following along with the meds and such. I don't think the yeast will hurt anything. The ACV should have yeast and some lactic acid producing bacteria (I think). It should be just fine. BTW, I can tell the barred rock chicks from you apart from the ones that are mixed here. The ones from you have a rounder body shape to look at them from the side. The mixed one has a longer body from head to tail. The mixed also has darker legs. I can tell the ones from you are going to be plump and round like the hen we have. I hope they get so round they look like they have super short legs, I love it they're so cute. They have a sweet temperment, and they're quite smart. They've adjusted to outside well and also to their new friends. They're all getting along wonderfully. My dh is wanting to move some 5 weekers outside tomorrow, I'm cringing even with heat lamps. We do need the space to keep everyone moving to more appropriate quarters. Winter has just begun and I'm looking forward to spring. For some reason while I was up with the little chick last night I was thinking about the vaporizer with the oxine in it. Is it a vaporizer or a cool mist humidifier? Same thing? Anyway, it makes sense that it would reduce the spread of airborn illnesses. It also makes sense that it would reduce the numbers of bacteria in the respiratory tract. I think we should try this with people too when we start spreading illnesses through the house. Anything that would cut down the number of the germs would have to help. Thanks for the chicken med link, I saved it.
Maidenwolf, I can normally tell by the smell if they're bad. Somehow you get to where you can tell when you pick them up too they just feel different and I can't even explain. Normally while I'm turning them and as soon as I pull my hand away I'll get a whiff and know it's a bad one. At that point you can just put them to your nose and you'll be able to tell and it's a much more stable way of holding them.

HEChicken, my camera cord was missing in action for a few days too. I know where it goes, but somehow it ended up falling from the drawer and must have been kicked under my bed. I was going crazy looking for it. I'm so glad you got your cord, I love the turkeys. Speaking of camera cord, I have some pics of the play kitchen my ds put together to come soon.

I don't know Hawkeye - I read about both of those conditions and neither mention the "drippy butt" she has that is the main visible symptom.. I've searched and searched for this and just can't find anything that discusses the drippiness.. She is my first ever chicken that I raised in a bathtub when I was still in Wichita waiting to move out here - I bought her on impulse from Atwoods with 4 other chicks - of the 4, I only have 2 left... the other 3 were killed by predators.
I came across this: http://hencam.com/henblog/2011/08/chickens-have-messy-bottoms/ She has a whole blog posting on how she treats gleet and she's successful had her chickens live on. I bought my iodine at Atwoods-- so it would be easy to find.

HEChicken, love the pics of Ned doing his thing! Hawkeye, you're right about the kids -- probably didn't even know they did it. LOL! Just had a thought -- what if it was me when I left the house? I kind of narrowed it down to me and the crew that went shopping with me, didn't I? What a sad thought!

The birds were out in spite of the cold today -- they really surprise me, I would have been holed up in one of the nest boxes were I a chicken. I've had a good day -- lots of fun with the kids in the craftroom doing their own thing. We went to the library today to exchange a movie and the kids checked out a bunch of books -- so did I. That's thinking ambitiously, isn't it? I still have apples to can, more soap to make, sewing projects to complete, PLUS the usual 7 loads of laundry, etc., so we'll see how many I get to by the time it's time to take them back.

Stay warm everyone -- supposed to break 40 tomorrow so that will be nice as long as the wind doesn't blow like crazy.
Yeah, usually I am to blame or the kids, even if we did not realize it. Sounds like a good day. I thought I was better this morning, but not. I'm definitely full blown sick with flu. But it could be worse.

I'm loving the gingerbread houses. The pics on the link are great too. I just don't like gingerbread; not the smell nor the taste. I may try the pattern on sugar cookie dough. I think the kids will enjoy decorating them.

I'm so sorry you are sick Hwkeye. :(

Mine don't get any different treatment than the rest of the chickens and they're doing just fine. Sometimes they are the ones outside running around while the others are hunkered down in the coop staying out of the cold!

I hope everyone had a productive day. It sure started getting chilly, I have flurries here. I put out my ff today at first everyone was not sure but by the end of the afternoon the feed was gone in the little bowls I put out there. I am feeding the young chicks ff from the start to see if there is a gowth difference that I can see. Tomorrow I have a large job ahead of me, we are gathering together all the metal scrap around here and taking it to a recycler. We hope to get enough to fill the tank and buy groceries but I am not sure how much metal goes for.We have washers and dryers and cans to take.
Hopefully soon I will get a delivery of chicks
