Consolidated Kansas

The bug eyes on the EE is adorable :) I have new babies hatching this weekend and I look so forward them arriving. I tend to do things backwards - I have no place for them :) So, they'll stay in a box in my warm house under the EcoGlow for a few weeks while I sweet talk my BF to help me put something together for them in the "barn" (It isn't really a barn, but a large storage building where the tractor, 4-wheelers and other stuff is stored.). It has electricity and is pretty secure - will be the perfect place for a little brooder.

Your chicks are adorable - congrats on your hatch.
Lol Yes they are cute. I am recieving my new incubator tomorrow cant wait. I will never stop incubating now

Good luck on your hatch

Hello All,
I am new to byc, but i am in KC metro area now, but grew up in small town KS--Williamsburg-you know the place with the good ribs from Guy and Mae's LOL. Thanks for letting me watch/learn/listen to you all.

I have a batch of frizzled cochin eggs coming next week to incubate and that will be my very first, even tho i have helped my sister who has quite a few chickens before. So maidenwolfs babies are making me very excited to say the least.

So sorry to all with ill and injured pets-i will send hope and prayers your way.

Where did you get your cochin eggs from and are they bantam or LF? I have bantam BBS and mille fleur cochins. You will be addicted!!! They are the best little birds.

So I am in such a pickle with this dog. She has buckling in her right leg which means her metal implants are pending failure and the leg is going to re fracture. The surgeon wants her back in to x ray her leg and open it back up. They think she probably needs a new bone graft and new hardware in the right leg. (Insert another giant bill from K State) The alternate option would be to amputate the right leg if her left leg was stable enough to support her weight but it might be months before the "good" broken leg is stable enough to support her full body weight. So if we wait and do nothing she is going to be walking around on a messed up broken leg with hardware falling out of her bone. There is no good option!

Linus needs a home if anyone has room in their home and heart for a super sweet kitty!
He is neutered, vaccinated, dewormed and on frontline. Isn't he a doll? I hate to leave him outside because he is such a love bug and I think would really appreciate a warm place to nap and someone to love on him.

Josie, those options sound ghastly - I'm so sorry - I wish I knew what to tell you.

I agree with whomever posted and said to be sure to read the fine print. You don't want a variable rate loan under any circumstances, no matter how low the starting rate is. She may be legit, but....

Sharol
I just got a call from my banker. She was doing some reviews and said she could refinance for less than half of the interest I pay now and I don't have to have all the appraisals and stuff done again so that saves me a ton in fees. She said it would put my loan on a 15 year loan rather than a 30 and my payments would actually be a little less each month. That sounds like a deal to me. She is emailing me the numbers. I guess I could ask for more so I could do the work I want to around here but I'd rather just pay as I go. I hate borrowing money. At 15 years I might actually pay this place off before I die.
Some decent news for a change. I had been thinking about this but figured I couldn't come up with all the money to refinance.

Frizzled Pink! You will have fun with the hatching eggs, we're all addicted.

Josie, I'm so sorry to hear about Lucie's leg problems, I totally understand the dilemma. We have a cat that was given to us by my hairdresser, who I have known for over 15 years. She had a previous broken leg when she had her & it was a bad break. We had her for several years when she decided we think one night to jump out the window on the 2nd floor down to the first floor. We have windows in the walls that open from the 2nd floor so you can see out into the open floorplan on the first floor, it's weird, but that's how this house is. Anyway, one night we heard a noise & things falling, but couldn't see what it was. The next day we found our cat Opal with a horrible broken leg that just hung there & my friend said that is how it was the first time too. She had surgery but the bone didn't heal properly & we couldn't afford another surgery on top of that one, the option was to either keep her in a crate for 8 weeks or put her down. We kept her in a crate with a big splint on for 8 weeks & the bone finally healed enough for her to walk, but she has a crooked leg. She can walk & run on it & scares me every time she jumps off something, but at least she is alive. You just have to do what you feel is right & can afford, sometimes it's a hard decision. I wish I could take the kitty, but we have these two in the house already & two little dogs. Outside we already have 8 that stay out there all the time, they are our mousers.

Danz, I probably will just try keeping the tom in the pen & see how it goes, I only have the one tom & two hens in there. I will go look for some nesting material for her in the next few days. Hawkeye if you feel like getting pics of the nest that would be helpful for all of us that are needing to make a nest for our turkeys. I'm thinking I may take the barrel out of the peafowl/guinea pen & put some kind of nest on the floor in there for the peafowl. What kind of nests do guineas need? I hadn't even thought of that yet & when do they start laying? I need to start thinking of all of these things to have them ready. Hey, I was just thinking that we have some old tires sitting out by the old hog pen down in front. How would a tire work with nesting material in the middle of it? Would that be too high?

HEChicken, I forgot to say congrats on the new horse. Did you find it on the Farm Swap? There have been so very many people wanting to get rid of horses in the last year due to the hay prices, they just can't afford them any more. I hope the horse works out well for your daughter, but it sounds like it's going well already. I wish I could have gotten up your way to see you when I was looking to get those chickens in Augusta, but that didn't end up working out & I got some elsewhere. It all worked out well though because I got 4 really nice young leghorns & then got two young barred rock pullets from Eileen, so after I get some silver laced wyandotte chicks in the spring from a guy in Oxford I think I'm done getting new ones for awhile unless I decide to keep some speckled sussex later on. I'm going to have to do some culling of hens that aren't producing in the spring, I just can't afford to feed hens that don't produce, it's just a fact of life here. They either produce or they have to go. I can't afford to have "pet" chickens here to feed for no return, they either need to lay for eating eggs or to produce chicks for selling. I have some I really like & have favorites, but the ones in question aren't the ones I like the best. I tend to like the more colorful chickens like my wyandottes & the speckled sussex in my main coop & my one little EE.

I'm going to have to get some pics of the two chicks that Sunflowerparrot hatched from my eggs tomorrow. I was going to do it tonight, but I figured the lighting would bet better in the morning. The one has speckled sussex spotting & coloring all the way, but has puffy cheeks, so I figure the momma is my little EE hen & daddy is my Speckled Sussex rooster. I'm keeping my fingers crossed it's a hen, but it really has some lungs on it, so I don't know. The other one has a few spots, but it's looking more & more like my gold laced wyandottes, so I figure momma is gold laced wyandotte & daddy is Speckled Sussex. I hope they're both pullets, but that's asking a lot probably & not my luck. With my luck the spotty one will end up being a rooster & he can't stay if he is, I already have too many roosters around here.

maidenwolf, I forgot to say that your chicks are adorable! I have taken the winter off from hatching, I needed a break anyway, but I will be ready to start again in the spring.

Thank you,, that really was just a test hatch so I was blessed to even have those 2 hatch. My new pro series farm innovators incubator will arrive tomorrow

So of course I will have to do another test hatch

Welcome Frizzled pink. I live outside of Waverly and my grandparents lived in Williamsburg when I was a kid. I spent a lot of time there with them in the summer.
Josie, I would love to take the cat but I just can't. I am currently discussing another cat that has been kicked out from being a house cat and needs a home desperately. My heart is way too big. I'm in trouble with DH anyway because of all the animals. And I know if I got another cat he would end up in the house. I can't go through loosing any more house pets. Yet this other cat is going to be dispatched to a barn with a bunch of sick cats if it doesn't find a home. I wouldn't care if we had one out at the barn but DH won't leave them outside.
We had a big old main coon Tom cat show up here shortly after we moved in. I tamed him and took him to be neutered as well. He was an awesome cat that stayed outside and was just huge. He still liked to go hunting though so after several months he disappeared. I am sure the coyotes got him. I hope someone decides to give Linus a home.
OH that news sucks about Lucy. What a disappointment after spending all this time and money to try to get her fixed. I am so sorry that she isn't doing better.
Trish the tires might work if you build the straw on the inside up high enough. In fact it sounds about the right size for a nest. Or you could cut them in half and make two nests out of one tire. We cut some to weight down the tarp when I get feed and we did it with a grinder. It'd probably be just easier to fill them with straw though....especially if they are steel belted. That's an excellent idea. The hen will hollow out a little area in the middle to lay. How old are your peahens?
My guineas lay on the ground. They just have some straw on a dirt floor in their house and they normally pick a corner to lay in. But sometimes they just drop them out in the pen. They do tend to like a low darker corner though. The guineas normally start laying in late March or so. Mine started a later last year than the year before. I don't know if the climate had something to do with that or not. They pretty much lay all summer then if it doesn't get too hot.
Sharol, I would never do a variable rate on a home loan. The only disadvantage I see to refinancing is that paying less interest means less tax deduction. But really why should I pay twice as long when I am paying for a house? I'd rather apply my money toward principal than interest. I'll do some more checking and see what the current rate is running elsewhere before I sign any papers.

I just seriously don't trust anyone to have my best interest but me. So many people got sucked into low initial interest in the mid 2000's and then when they hit the variable date, the interest rate climbed to the point they couldn't make the payments.

I wouldn't get a variable on ANYTHING (but I was married to a banker for 24 years) either. I guess we all just want to look out for each other.
