Consolidated Kansas

HEChicken, congrats on the new 'bator, I know you will love it. I wish I could afford to get one of those myself just as a backup for my cabinet.
Thanks, yes, I think I will be very happy with it. I've always heard good things about the Rcoms but they sure are pricey. I was primarily looking at the Max and Pro that hold 20 and 50 but you pay as much for a Pro 20 as for a GQF Cabinet Incubator!!! Considering the difference in the number of eggs each can incubate, I just couldn't see paying that kind of money for a tabletop that only incubates 20 eggs. Let's just say I did not go for that model.

Today is day 6 with eggs in incubator. Do you have to candle them? I've never done this so I'm a bit nervous plus I don't have a candler I would just use a flashlight
You don't HAVE to candle at all - you can just wait 21 days and see what happens. Most people do prefer to though as it is a real thrill to see that little fetus moving around in there if they are developing, and if they are not, you don't have to waste the rest of the 21 days turning them and waiting and watching. You don't need a candler. I just use a strong LED flashlight and make sure I am in a room that has absolutely no light. If you have a room or closet in your house with no windows, that is perfect. Take the eggs in, close the door and turn off the lights, using only the flashlight for your light source. Make an "O" with thumb and forefinger and place the egg in the "O", and then place the flashlight under the egg, touching it lightly. You will then be able to see into the egg. It may take a little turning to be sure of what you are looking at - the best place to start is to make sure you can identify the air cell. Once you've done that, you will have a reference point to look for veining and a dark (hopefully moving) dot in the middle of the egg.

I will send you a PM about picking up all your goodies! Thanks! Maybe you can give me a quick lesson the the wire tie tool. We have one and every once in a while I get it just by sheer luck but I still haven't figured out the trick to it. When it does work it is slick but I can't seem to commit the process to memory!
I would be happy to show you how I use it!

Trish, I'm glad to hear you haven't lost any more birds - it sounds like the dogs caught whatever it was and got rid of it for you.

Danz, congrats on selling one of your pups!

Hey Danz, get some pork chops out, and some mushroom soup. Brown the chops, turn the heat down to low, add a little sage, mushroom soup, with ! cup water. Cover, cook 20 minutes, turn meat over simmer anouther 20. Done bake a tater, and salad. Done

Well, I did it! I ordered an Rcom incubator. I've been looking for awhile and finally found one at a decent price with free shipping.
I LOVE my R-Com... I almost forget I even have eggs I'm incubating - it just takes care of everything for you - it holds a lot of water too... so you don't have to worry about the humidity. It is wonderful. I have eggs due to hatch Monday - I sure hope we don't lose power tonight. If we do, all I can do is cover the incubator with a blanket and hope for the best.

Sounds good checoukan but I have no chops. I just did about the same recipe with steak a few days ago. Except for instead of sage I use one package of onion soup mix with the mushroom soup. Delicious.
If you like pork chops here is a recipe that sounds weird that I have had for years and years. It sounds like a strange combination but it is so good. Almost an oriental flair to it. I like serving it with rice. You season the pork chops with salt and pepper then brown them in a skillet. Add one jar or can of applesauce, 1 c. catsup, 1 sliced onion, 1 tbsp soy sauce, and 1/4 to 1/2 tsp sage. Cover and simmer for 45 minutes or until tender. I've also done this on low heat and let it simmer for a couple hours. Just makes it that much better. It sounds weird but the blend of flavors it excellent.
BTW Hechicken you never reported back on the milk chicken. Did it turn out okay?

Oh, how funny, I have T-Bones in the mushroom soup, and fried potatoes on the side. Have to give that recipe a try.

Well the sun was shining here a little while ago. But, the weather is coming in out of Oklahoma. Danz, you are going to get 6 to 9 inche of snow.
Lesser amounts as you move south east towards me. We are mainly supposed to get sleet, but that sleet is just as slick as freezing rain, which is going to be just south of us.

Lost my show hen, and then lost anouther one that evening, I didn't even know she was not feeling well until that morning. No coughing, sneezing, watery eyes nothing. I am just sick. I don't know what hit them. I was going to show them at Pryor, and then their show career was over, and they were going to become mothers. Well back to the drawing board. I still have 9 show hens out there, but not in condition. I wish they would hurry with my barn!!

I have a couple of pork chop recipes I like to make. One has pineapple rings on top that I add after I brown them on both sides, then put some brown sugar on top of the pineapple & let them simmer covered till done. The other one I brown the chops & then put sauerkraut on top & then brown sugar on top of that & simmer till done. They're both yummy.

Unfortunately, it didn't go over very well here. DH said he didn't really like the chicken "boiled" with the skin on so asked if I made it again, would I take the skin off. I would have to say, although I usually like chicken skin, I would probably prefer it without the skin if I did it again, as instead of being nice and crispy like fried chicken, it was soft and white and sort of blah.

I am so sorry for your losses.

All those pork chop recipes sound yummy!

Hechicken, so I didn't mention I don't eat the skin. Just use it for flavoring. I wonder if I left something out of the recipe. Mine always turns out so good and every one I've ever fed it loves it. You really didn't boil it did you? It's a baked dish.
I made my own version of baked potato soup tonight. Just waiting for DH to come in to eat. It looks great and smells great. It's a first time evolution. I adapted other recipes to suit me.
Michelleml so happy for you!
Checoukan I remember you posting about treating her. I am so sorry. I guess that is the thing that makes me so nervous about getting expensive birds. I don't show but loosing one of those top quality birds is awful.
We are right below the area they were forecasting snow vs freezing rain. They said I-35 was the line and we are around 10 miles south of I-35. I will definitely take the snow over freezing rain any day. I hope we get that instead. As cold as it is I can't imagine getting freezing rain unless the southern front brings in warm air in the upper atmosphere.
