Danz do you ever sell fertile eggs from copper marans?
We have 7 days till hatch day. My DH made a brooded yesterday and ecogrow light came in yesterday so I just need feed and we are set:).
It's snowing here but doesn't look like its going to be much. We so need warmer weather

Yes I will be. I don't have them separated yet cause as far as I know only one or two of them have started laying so far. Are you interested in black copper or blue copper? I am trying to breed for blue copper but do have some black copper I could separate for a special order.

Maidenwolf I just bought the second least expensive brewers yeast for beer making. The birds go nuts for it. The only ingredient besides yeast is E491 which is an actifier that makes it regenerate faster. It is in all quick rise yeasts. It is made from plant derivatives, not chemicals so it should be perfectly safe.

Rob! No Karen was talking about putting brewers yeast in FF for added protein and niacin. I got my yeast at the same shop I am sure you do, up near my sons home. We aren't talking the tubes of expensive liquid yeast you guys use. We are talking the cheap little packets. The birds don't care what flavor their beer is!

Did I miss a post where Karen is asking about brewing? If so, PM me Karen and I can give you a wealth of info on making tasty beer. That goes for anyone else too. Oh and I have a ton of hops for sale too.
Pikeman, she just wants it as a nutritional supplement for her chicken feed, not to start brewing beer

Danz, good luck on the car shopping. Do not envy you there. I'm depressed enough at the idea of having to change phones some day - I like the one I have now far better than anything else on the market so I may have to start buying up every used one I can find on eBay since they no longer make it, so that when my current phone dies, I will be able to switch to another just like it.

Danz it doesn't matter which we just want to have some hens in our flock for the beautiful colored eggs

I get the 1lb containers of powder. I am sure you can get it at a whole foods place. Nutritional and brewers yeast as well as powdered kelp, bee pollen, and spiralina. Those also go into my feed and of course me as well.

Yes brewers yeast for the chickens, it is very good for them.. But my DH brews and I am sure would LOVE some hops, I will talk to him tonight

Well my two packages came today, so I'm not sure what the delay was, but they got here. One of them is my new Brinsea Ecoglow 50, I can't wait to take it out & see what it's like, I already have two of the Ecoglow 20s & like them a lot, in fact one of them is in use now.

I'm looking so forward to some warmer days to get out & do things I desperately need to do & to melt off this darned stuff still on the ground here.

Josie, I haven't put eyes on any of these tormentors, save one, and he was just a regular coyote with a limp. But the hybrid thing would make sense of what happens around here on a regular basis. They come right up to the kids playset, don't seem shy of the house at all. It's crazy and I think Hawkeye's right, I need to stop going out there alone. I need to just break down and get a skinny friend to make those trips out the back door with me! Sounds like I'll have to be a sharp shooter to make any impression on them. Sheesh!

Josie, I loved the info on poop boards. That's very interesting. I think Hawkeye recommended the Sweet PDZ a long time ago and I got Stall Dry at Atwoods and didn't care for it. I think I'm going to get a bag of the Sweet PDZ since it would be helpful on the concrete outside the coop even now. I'll be cleaning the coop out again once the weather warms up next week. Of course, I may just tough it out until I get the unfinished part of the shop modified to house all the birds in their separate breeding groups. Then I could build poop boards just once.

I need to go back to poop boards, it really contains all the big overnight mess and keeps them from walking around in it. I have a few dummies that continue to sleep on the floor under the perches and they of course get pooped on! Yuck! Yes, do be careful out there. Some of those big ones are quite brazen. My friend down in Mulvane said she went out one night to catch two of them sniffing around their chicken pen (only about 50 feet from their house) and when she approached them they didn't turn and run. They stood and stared at her for a long time before she picked up a rock and threw it at them. Scary!!!
Oh no!!!!!! The tragedy!!!! You poor thing. I did that once with a silkie egg that was almost ten days along and I was heartbroken. So glad the boys are getting their business done! I have had eggs wrapped in bubble wrap and never had a problem with them hatching? I think when I start shipping eggs I am going to use the foam tubing to package eggs in though. Seems a lot easier to do and easier for the buyer to unpack too. And it keeps them upright in the box which I think makes a big difference in detached air cells.
I've been busy trying to car shop again and I am hours behind. Oh geez! I need to get to town but at the same time I need to get some stuff done here. I've had some calls about pups today so maybe I will sell a couple this weekend with luck.

I had to candle some eggs going into the hatcher so while I was at it I candled the first 5 goose eggs I put in the incubator. They've been there maybe 5 or 6 days. Three of the five were fertile!!! I was so excited. But as I was putting them back in one fell off and broke. And of course it was beautifully developing!! I felt like crying. At least I know the boys are getting the job done out there!
I also candled the few turkey eggs I have and most seem to be developing.
I had 18 BBS English Orpington eggs due to come out the 5th. Not a single one developed at all. The seller had wrapped them completely in bubble wrap not leaving an open end. I strongly suspect that is what killed them. This is a very well known breeder and these were expensive eggs. She says her hens are shut down again due to colder weather. Drat!!!
Gotta get busy. This car shopping is taking too much time.
Those serama girls lay some darn big eggs for how tiny they are! I have one girl who has a very, very distinct egg song. When it is warm out and the windows are open I can hear her all the way from the house. She gets the entire flock of biddies going!
I'm enjoying the FF discussion. I did it for a few weeks in the fall but decided not to over the winter. I'm considering starting it back up again once the weather is warm enough I can ferment it at the coop.

Maidenwolf, is that laundry soap dry or liquid? Like Checoukan, I have an HE washer and I think I need a liquid to use. From Scratch magazine had a recipe for liquid that made a 5-gallon bucket for under $2, and it didn't look that hard so I've been considering giving it a shot.

I found out who laid the little whitish/cream egg while I was gone - my little Serama hen. So cute - when I went down to the coop a little while ago she was singing the egg song and just like the Serama rooster crow, which is such a tiny, squeaky sound, the egg song was a tiny, high-pitched squeaky sound. Very, very cute. I'm actually impressed at how big the egg is comparative to her size.

Even more exciting - a silkie is laying her first egg
ya.gif
She was sitting in her nest so I left her alone but do have to laugh at how fussy she was being, picking constantly at the bedding around her, rearranging it to try to get it perfectly to her liking, unlike my older LF hens who sit in the nest box with a faraway expression on their faces just waiting until its time to stand up and push.....
Hahahaha! My cochins are the same way. They spend an hour making the nest just so for their precious egg! Sometimes I think they still aren't happy but have to give in because the egg is coming!
Maybe I'll give FF a shot in the summer. But seriously, I'm going to have to hear everyone say that their birds are eating less and less interested in it and satisfied! ha! I am definitely going to try it and I think I am going to try whole grains for my geese but it won't be their main feed just because I can't keep up with stuff like that. I am planning on using it more as a supplement. I wonder about your crested birds making a mess of themselves in the wetness? I had a crooked beak ameraucana a few years ago and she would get just covered in wet feed so badly I would have to bathe her every couple of weeks!

I would be really sick of painting too. I'm not a big fan of it if it can't be done in an afternoon! I like to knock out a room and be done in a day. It was nice to get out today and get a lot of errands done. I drove all over Wichita, though. So that part wasn't totally fun. I did treat myself to lunch at Chipotle, though! I LOVE that place!!
Its all the trim and fine detail stuff. I just want to get out a roller and go crazy on the walls!

Ahhh, the serama!! Oh, I bet that is a cute egg! So exciting that your silkies are starting to lay!! YAY!! First timers! Mine are like that-- VERY fussy about the nest. My layers are like you just described-- in and out and no fuss. Those silkies can put up a fit getting the right hole dug and the right spot picked out. I have a nest box for them, but so far, they all refuse to use it and dig down a hole in the shavings and then go round and round like a dog until it seems just right.
hu.gif

I have a cochin hen who hates the nest boxes!! She will use whatever else she can find because she wants ultimate privacy. One time I found her in a half full shavings bag, another time she was in the feed bin that the lid got knocked off of. I find her eggs all over the place.

Oh yes! Chick days have begun! I go to the right and around the back of Orschelns so I don't make any unwise purchases from the chick cages!
Oh dear, does that mean chick days have already started? I have really good self-discipline as long as I don't have to actually go INTO a feed store, but I'm getting low on horse feed so I'm going to have to make a trip this weekend.
Karen- Wait until you go into this place! It is such a hole in the wall but the folks there are super nice. DH wanted to get into home brewing so I bought him a starter beer kit from there and it is quite the place!
Karen, Here is a local source for brewers yeast. You can buy packets as cheap as like $1.25 or so. Each different kind of yeast will yield a different flavor of beer. Just ask for the cheap stuff.

Hechicken, I have never figured out why people get upset about their dogs or cats eating their chicken feed. It is obviously cheaper than dog food! I can't imagine a cat eating chicken food though unless they aren't being fed otherwise. My dogs have always loved chicken feed and they really love the FF. They follow me around like the chickens do when I am feeding. Just makes their poo a little fancier!
lol.png
My cats wouldn't touch it cause they are picky about real cat food...let alone anything else.
I get ticked off when the dogs eat the chicken feed because our heeler or Lucie will eat the whole thing! Then the birds have no food.
I have been trying to negotiate on a car but the people don't speak good English. I feel like banging my head on the wall. It is a long distance and I don't want to drive there and have it sold before I get there. I want to get it today if it is the one I want. I am so sick of looking for a vehicle. I'm passed trying to find a perfect color. I just want a good car at a good price.
I could scream. It makes me too uptight.
It's supposed to only get to 34 here as well Trish but right now it is only 29. It is cloudy and gloomy and they are predicting some snow late afternoon. Please Lord make the weather warm up!
Stay strong you all, on buying chicks. I wish I didn't have what I do right now to care for. But at the same time I know I need to get busy hatching so I can make some sales.

All I could picture was Karen brewing beer for her chickens!!! What is that disney movie where the geese get drunk and are staggering along holding onto each other hiccuping. I laughed out loud thinking about chickens getting drunk and staggering around with their wings over each others backs!!!

It is SNOWING out right now!!!! I am NOT a happy camper. It is so gosh darn cold out. Ugh.

Well the plan is that the horse fencing will be put up this weekend. Moving the horses is in motion for next weekend or mid week depending on the lady who is going to truck them for us. Chicken pens should be close to done so I am probably going to haul birds down next weekend and part of the following week. We are tentatively planning on packing the rest of the house next Monday. I am exhausted just thinking about it!

Hawkeye- I keep forgetting to ask you. Do you think pinless peepers would work on roos? I am going to have a "bachelor pad" once the pens are all built and would like to keep any boys that are not presently in breeding pens together but I have a few that start trouble. I am wondering if you think they stay on well enough to keep boys from squabbling? I don't want to risk a big fight so if they are hard to keep on I will just come up with a different game plan.

While DH takes over this latest catastrophe, I sat down to catch up on you guys.

OMGosh! As I read the conversation today I started to snicker, then I got started laughing and it just got funnier and funnier and I ended up laughing so hard I got tears in my eyes. Thank you, thank you, thank you! You all are just too funny! Oh my stars! As it happens, it was a perfect time for me to start brewing beer!!! If anyone wants me I'll be out drinking with the chickens!

Pikeman, thank you for your generous and kind offer. I will probably take you up on it one day. I would like to do it once just to say I did and I'm still thinking an English brew!

Aaahhh. DH has tracked down and arranged for DS to ride up with one of the other boys tomorrow.

Hahahaha! Glad you had a good laugh!! Here is a you tube video of that movie, it is the Aristocats and drunk Uncle Waldo!

Drinking with the chickens, hehehehehe!

Pikeman-I wish you had been around a few years ago when DH tried his hand at beer, it was awful. And even he refused to drink it but also refused to dump it out! I finally pitched all the beer while he was out of town for a business trip because it was horrid. He said when he got home he was glad it was gone because he couldn't drink it! We had a whole closet full of undrinkable beer....
