Consolidated Kansas

My ancona ducks have been on strike for the last couple of weeks. They laid eggs all through the winter but have now ceased production. I think it is because our neighbor reroofed their house right before the storms. They were not happy about that! In fact They were quite indignant.

Hopefully the Muscovy ducks I got from chickies-duckies-etc last fall will soon get production ramped up. The chocolate drake has turned in to quite the good looking heart throb.

I'm missing the duck eggs.
Somehow I missed this before. I bet you are missing the duck eggs! I got muscovies mid-May last year and got the first egg on Valentine's Day. Since then, production has been excellent - I think that first duck has only taken one day off laying since she started and yesterday I got two eggs. I have 4 ducks total so am looking forward to the day I finally collect 4 eggs daily. The muscovy eggs are HUGE too - I can't fit them in a regular egg carton, even one sized for extra large eggs. Or, at least, I put them in the carton but there is no way possible to close the lid. I don't know how that compares to mallard based duck eggs.

I'd love to see a pic of your chocolate drake! I have a chocolate duck and another duck who is chocolate and white. The other four (2 ducks, 2 drakes) are all black.

That's so funny - most people hope for pullets and are disappointed when one ends up being a rooster, especially if they live in an area where roosters aren't allowed. You shouldn't have any trouble finding a rooster to add to your flock if you later decide you want one. Look on Craigslist, or there is a Facebook Poultry Swap page here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/275183675880038/ that you can join. There are roosters on there all the time, or you can make your own post if you are looking for something specific.

Welcome Derrick!! I am guessing that you are starting with chicks, not adult birds? If you just want a rooster I am sure I can donate a young one to you. I don't have any of those breeds except for the rocks however. Also I might recommend about April start watching Craigslist for the swap meets at Premier Farm in S. Topeka. I couple I know has all kinds of purebred chicks to sell on the cheap. They do have silver laced Wyandottes and many other breeds.
I live about an hour South of Topeka and do a lot of business in that area.
Pretty quiet on here today. I went and picked up a Mandarin hen this morning, banded her and added her to the aviary. She was sure glad to get out of that shipping box. I really need to figure out a way to catch some of my last years birds and get them to the Gardner sale. I have too many birds in there for sure.
I am ready to have an easy day but I have so much to do. I think my floors should just become permanent mud. There is tons being tracked in and it is going to take forever to get it cleaned up.
We still have lots of snow and a whole bunch of mud out there. I was hoping the snow would get down low enough I could go back to work on the hoop coop. But the base is still under snow.
I still want to build a double one with twin coops in the middle. I think it would be a great breeding facility.

Glad to have you here, jump in any time to the conversation. I agree with HEChicken, you could find quite a few roosters on the Kansas Poultry Swap, there is always someone needing to get rid of an extra.

Well the day went pretty well with my grand daughter yesterday, although I didn't have a lot of time to spend with her. My DH entertained her & she loves her grandpa. I went out determined I was going to get all the rest of the things done that I needed to do in order to get my last two groups of chickens moved to their new digs. I got the last two pens covered, moved their water & food bowls outside, screwed the nest boxes to studs so they can't tip them over, & got all the shavings put in. I moved the SFH & Cream Legbars to their new home last thing before feeding all the birds, whew that is such a relief. None of those birds have been inside a building they have been in a dog run since they've been old enough to be outside, so going into a building was a bit of a freakout for them. They soon figured out they could come out the pop door into the outside pen, but getting them in at bedtime was a bit of a chore, they didn't want to go. They will learn though. They should be much happier in the new place, at least they won't be in such a messy pen any more. That is the muddiest pen around when it rains or snows that they were in. I still have painting to do on the coop, but it will have to wait till it warms up a little more. I wanted to get the inside painted before I moved birds in there, but because of the weather that didn't happen either, oh well such is life. Now if those birds in that coop will start laying that will be great!

Today I have a friend coming over to help me this afternoon to put up a pen for my little goat. I hope I have enough materials to use for it because I just have no money right now to go buy more. I had hoped to save the last two livestock panels I have for the hoop coop, but they're going to have to go for the goat pen instead right now. We'll have to get on building the hoop coop before long since I have 25 broiler chicks coming April 15th. I plan to put them in there to stay until they get processed.

Well enjoy the weather today, it's already 55 here now, that was supposed to be our high for the day, it looks like it's going to get warmer than they thought. I'll take it, I am so done with winter. We do have two colder days after this, but then another warmup. I am so ready!

Wow! you are so lucky. It is just 38 here. I don't think it is supposed to get above the mid 40's. I could really use some warm weather and a lot of this snow melted and mud dried up. Too bad this moisture doesn't soak in. That is where we need it...not sitting on the top of the ground. I think our warm day is Friday and I will be in the hospital that day so it's going to be wasted. Waa! Waa!
Trish you've done amazing on your building. Just shows what you can do. I'm sure not making progress like I need to. I saw you were looking for another goat. Did the other deal for the second baby fall through or did you just decide to get a third one.
Depends on what you are looking Trudi! Most places that means Buy It Now. Your goose eggs are in the incubator. Put them in yesterday so start counting. I will try to candle in a week or so to see if they are developing.
People sure let me down this weekend. I had three dogs that were supposed to be sold and they didn't show. So I still have 4 boys left. I am really sick of puppy sitting.
I am bad. I said I was going to watch my pennies but found a source for white English orpingtons. So I bought eggs. I have a nice group of White orps to breed with but I so love the English Orpingtons. I think combining some of each would yield a lot nicer bigger and fluffier offspring. Or I guess I could breed English separately for higher priced chicks. Here I am counting my chickens before they are hatched again.

Thanks for the update on the muscovies. I was wondering how they are turning out.
